Never said he wasn’t. They’ve both performed their best football though when at sides that they’re one of the best players at rather than just one of many at a big club/nation.
PSV werent a lesser side. There were many top players there. He is Holland's most important player in a side with Van Dijk, De Ligt, Frenkie, Wijnaldum.

In the context of PSV vs Manchester United they are a lesser side by a long stretch.

Its a bit different as Depay was still devloping and was quite young when he was at Utd. He definitely has the quality and mentality to play at a bigger club now.

Think it was meant relatively. He has played for one big side, and failed. Dont know why that is now a measuring stick for his whole career.
It's not for me. But there are players who just perform better when being the big fish in a small pond. That's no judgement, it's just their character.

I was going to say he shrivels when the quality of the opposition is dialed up but you're saying it in a nicer way so I'll defer to this. He has the ability of the attacking players of the generation that preceded his own but he'll never be mentioned in the same breath.

Any particular reason he doesn‘t wear his surname on his shirt?

Wiki says his Dad walked out on the family when he was 4 and there was stories when he joined us that he didn't want to have his father's surname on his shirt.

But that just makes me wonder why not just take your mother's maiden name if there is that much resentment.

Thanks, in that case understandable.

Maybe because his mother’s maiden name was something like Boggs or suchlike ;)

As good as he was first half, that's how bad he was in the second one. That will never leave his game.

He's quite good. The talent was always there but he added a lot more consistency and application since he played for us. You could see what Van Gaal was trying with him as a #10 in early days.

Sums up where Barcelona are at the moment that they’re even considering signing him.

Is he better than Martial and Rashford currently? :nervous:
No, he isn't.

Rashford is miles better than him.

Martial is too despite his shocking season.

Memphis isn't good enough to be at a top club. He's a big fish in a small pond type player.

Well, against Ukraine, as the main man, he got his chance to prove his status as an international rapper, global football player and his swag lifestyle...

Face palm performance. Just thinking about his rap videos made me cringe.

The amount of trolls and shit posting we got if he still plays for us.

Great first half, horrible second half.

Memphis Depay vs Ukraine
Shots on target- 1/2
Acc passes- 44/52
Passes in opp half- 35/44
Key passed- 3
Acc long balls- 1/2
Acc crosses- 2/5
Successful dribbles- 4/10
Recoveries- 6

In my eyes, he was by far the best player in the first half, but also by far the worst player in the second half. Really a game of two halves for Depay.

Where the grass is greener.
To me he's improved from when he was with us, but largely remains the same frustrating player. I'd have close to zero interest in seeing him back here.

Wasn't there a story about his father abandon the family and therefore he didn't want his fathers name on the shirt... or something like that....

You reading this list like they are superstars......
Think they pretty much are apart from Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum is a difficult one. Think his stats have been bang average for Liverpool recently but he's achieved quite a bit for/with them with some huge goals/performances at the bigger stages. Also for his NT he has been performing better than basically all other midfielders for the past 3 years. 15 goals and 6 assists in his last 26 matches for Holland.

Yes, I (recently) heard that as well …..so understandable he wouldn’t want to wear it

I don't see them as that hot compared to players of the past. Only Van Dijk plays for a top contender. If I was naming a world 11 maybe one of those players would be in contention for the line up and possibly one more might make the bench.

Rashford has a much higher ceiling than Depay.

Depay currently shades it on experience and finishing.

Then as United fans comparing United players to him/them we shouldnt be speaking of big ponds at all. None of the United players play at a contender.

Nor do I really see the point of this discussion anymore, what are we talking about? Frenkie, De Ligt, Van Dijk are about the first names on their respective clubs team sheet, at teams that operate at a higher level than United currently. I think they'd all easily start at United, including Wijnaldum. If you disagree, that's fair enough as well.

Joining Barca on a free. Clubs really have got to stop letting players doing this.
Did we miss out on a sell on fee also?

With Memphis Depay and other players, if you lose the ball 3 times after each other you should understand that it's not your day, stop trying to dribble, and stop doing stupid tricks. Keep it simple, otherwise, you will get games like Depay where you lose the ball 20 times in 1 game.
