Right or wrong he's chosen playing for England over playing for United. You'd hope the club were fully onboard with that decision because we're still paying his wages and it's a huge impact to us.

Would we have been so considerate if a non-english playing staff put country before club i wonder.

Like the lads going to the Olympics? I think we have to allow them to follow International dreams, as players have such short careers.

Because, obviously, he scored our second highest number of goals last season and our second highest number of assists. Whether or not you thought he was “playing shite” we almost certainly wouldn’t be playing in the CL if he’d had this operation in the middle of last season.
from Jan over a span of 22 league games he scored 1 league goal in the 9-0 win, 1 in 3-1 win vs Newcastle, 1 vs Brighton in 2-1 win 1 in loss vs Liverpool (4 goals).

he assisted in 3-3 draw with Everton, 2-0 win vs City, 3-1 Burnley win, 3-1 Villa win. (4 assists)

All in all I'm not so sure.

Can’t be arsed doing the research but I’m sure he also scored goals/got assists in cup competitions over that same period of time. Bottom line, he was an important player for us last season, despite being well below par for most of it, and would have been badly missed if he’s got this operation mid-season. Would also have prompted inevitable outrage about him missing club games to get fit for the Euros.

Agreed for the most part, we're better off having him finally address those nagging issues with surgery finally rather than continue to risk long term issues.

He's played an insane amount of football so far in his career despite still being just 23 so it bodes better for the future having some extended recovery time.

Also gives a chance for the likes of Greenwood and Amad to continue getting regular playing time for their developement even with Sancho joining

This should have been done immediately after the season. There was absolutely no point in him going to the Euros. He's now going to be a huge miss for us.

Hopefully it goes well for him though.

I’m more surprised we can’t find a surgeon who’s free for a month. I know there will be preferences for the club, but surely there is a top surgeon available somewhere. That run of games at the beginning of November is a killer, and we’ll need all the squad depth possible.

Easy to say that with hindsight. Put yourself in Marcus' shoes, he was probably thinking England have a very good chance at winning the Euros beforehand. To be part of a Euro winning side, he would be remembered by England fans for a long, long time.

If you weigh up that choice, it's worth it, even if it means missing out on a few months for his club. Doesn't mean that he favours England over United, just meant that he was ambitious and logical.

Players bodies are their livelihoods, so they are obviously very particular about who they use for surgeries. Go back to Ole's comments during Pogba's injury when Pogba used his own doctor, Ole said he did the same over club doctors, all the players have doctors they trust for certain situations. They just don't go find the next doc in line even if they are reputable.

We also don't know all the details behind what is required pre-op. There could be inflammation that needs to reduce through rest or any number of things. Everyone is speculating as what is best not thinking about the player, the human being, but, rather the club and what would be best for the club. The man has already been playing through injuries for 2 years, a little understanding might be in order to let him heal properly. He's 23, probably got another 10+ years to give to us, we can certainly be okay with a couple extra weeks.

He didn't play much with England though. Not like he was an important part of the squad or anything to postpone an important surgery just to be part of it. People would have hailed Kane, Sterling, Shaw and Maguire more than him if they had won it.

His health is more important than the sport anyway. He indeed should have done the surgery immediately after the season ended.

Can’t blame him for going to Euros but I think his decline in form since new year has been as much mental as physical. There’s no such thing as being fit to play 90 minutes but not being fit enough to track back or look interested

Oh, I don't think it has anything to do with him favouring England over United, necessarily. He obviously loves United, and while there is a certain amount of hindsight in what I'm saying, everyone also knew that he wasn't really going to play. He hasn't been fit in so long that it always felt a little strange that he was going.

If he knew he was barely going to get a minute on the pitch and that Saka would be starting ahead of him, he may well have taken a different decision.

It was reasonable as of a month ago to expect he would be in line to start a few matches.

Why the hell has he been allowed to play for United for the past few months whilst injured?

As I said earlier when the club decided to allow that they were basically accepting be could go away with England too.
Indeed - it was even as if he was playing particularly well...

I’m only going off the articles, which say Rashford himself wanted it done ASAP. Has he even had any surgeries since he broke into the first team? How would he have a favourite surgeon if not.

Of course it needs to be sorted and it doesn’t really matter long term, but this is a forum and people are going to speculate! I’d rather he got it sorted right away and wasn’t run into the ground last season by Ole, but he was always going to the Euros (and who can blame him).

Hopefully they get on with this now, don't wait until the end of the month and waste 2 weeks!

It's essential to get him right, otherwise he'll have a number of underpar seasons and probably be finished by 30 maximum.

You're right, he didn't play much with England, however, we don't know if Rashford knew that for sure beforehand, or perhaps Southgate was clear with him & he decided to go anyway. There's also the scenario that Marcus may have thought that he would play a pivotal role, in this case he would have been hailed as much as those other players you mentioned.

Regarding his health is more important than the sport, correct, to Rashford it is, it's also his choice to sacrifice in such case of winning a Euro's. He obviously made his decision which at the time he probably thought was best. Unfortunately, it's ended up with Marcus being sidelined for the beginning of the season & failing to win the Euro's.

Annoying that he’s prioritised playing for England over playing for us
Annoying the club prioritised trying to win a trophy and top 4 before taking a players health into consideration. If rumours are true he couldn't get his boot on for the EL final then it doesn't matter how much the player wants to play. Decisions needed to be made to overrule him some time ago.

In hindsight he should probably never have been at the Euro's, the break is much needed and will do him good for numerous reasons. Look forward to seeing him back back at his best when ready.

As I said to the other poster, it's so obvious that he has been unfit for some time and I think it was generally accepted that he really wouldn't be playing much at all for England in the Euros.

This is where I disagree with you when you say it was reasonable to think he would start a few matches. I just don't think it was. That's where my frustrations stem from.

I should say that can see it from his perspective. Wanting to go just in case they did win the tournament. I'm just looking at it from a United fan perspective which is all I care about. He's going to be a big miss for us

I’m no surgeon but how the hell does a shoulder surgery keep you out for 10 weeks?
I'm not a surgeon but I've been present for hundreds of shoulder surgeries in my career, most of which (unless its a total shoulder replacement) have been by keyhole surgery. The issue is what is being done to the ligament. I have no idea in this particular case, but bear in mind a torn ligament in the knee can mean 9 months out and in the ankle 4-6 months. Clearly a shoulder takes less hits than a knee in football, but an 80kg player running at full pelt, being tripped and breaking their fall with their arm can put an enormous amount of strain on what is actually quite a thin piece of tissue (imagine the strip of fat you see on a rasher of bacon - it's that kind of size and colour, although immensely stronger). That's just my 2p worth from someone who sees shoulder surgery all the time, with the obvious caveat that no one has actually said what exactly the surgery is.

If he's coming up with those quite insane stats when he's playing half injured for the past two seasons, imagine a fully fit and healthy Marcus Rashford could do for us. It's a pity he has to be out of the team now that Sancho has come. Can't wait for them to link up together on both sides of the pitch when he returns

Don't think he's been injured allthat time though. I think the injury either occured or got a lot worse a little way through this season, as his performances (and contributions) massively dropped off. A fully fit Rashford wouldn't have spent Euro 2020 sitting on the bench while Saka was starting games...well maybe he would have with Southgate as manager, but the point is you couldn't really justify putting him in or near that team ahead of Grealish, Foden, Sancho, Sterling, Saka, etc. where as at his best he's an obvious first choice.

Have to say I'm a bit annoyed at both him and Ole. He's played half the season injured and now will miss a fair chunk of next season, just so he could go sit on the bench at the Euros and basically do nothing. How was that any help to his career, United or England? A Pep or Sir Alex would have told him absolutely ages ago to go get himself back to full fitness or not be picked, rather than play him in every single game for months even though he's half as effective as he should be and ends up coming off injured in half of them.

But then you are looking at an out of form Martial, Dan James and Amad(as talented as he is, still raw), as his replacements. We have sancho now, so we should ride it out.

The glazers should have invested in 2 quality wingers a couple of seasons ago. Better late than never, I suppose.

Again you're failing to recognise that the club has been allowing him to play with an injury for months! Then you expect it to say PS you can't go the Euros?

That's not how you manage people.
Fair point.

It doesn't really matter. You bite the bullet and get the player fit surely rather than run them into the ground and end up with months of sub par performances and with them eventually being too injured to play anyway.

Also for a portion of the time Rashford was playing with his injury, we were leaving Cavani sat on the bench and choosing to play Martial ahead of him, so I don't buy that Ole thought it was because we had no other options. He was also barely starting Greenwood at that time.

And Rashford is probably my favourite player, but by the last couple of months of the season his performances really were poor. It was obvious for some time before that he wasn't right and I doubt playing when you're half fit does much for the confidence or motivation, or mentality when you're constantly doing everything with half a mind on not aggrevating your injury. Which is why I think its fair to criticise him a bit as well. He must have known he wasn't able to play at his best.

It just seems a bit obvious to me. Basically, don't play injured players, due to the fact they are injured. It should have been addressed and sorted well in time for him to be fit for the end of last season and the Euros, never mind next season.

I agree that he should have been seen to before the end of the season, he clearly wasn't right for a while. Hopefully he comes back good as new.

Mate you would have done the same to represent your country. Marcus is a very proud Englishman.
It's baffling how a silver medal in the Euro ends up being described a waste of time. Many a great players don't have a pot to show for it.
If another Euro was to start next week I'd encourage him to postpone the surgery. Call me delusional but country always takes precedence over club.

It's the way we've been doing things recently.

Ole praised Fred for training and playing through injury. We've played all of Pogba, Maguire, Rashford, Lindelof, and Fred through injuries at various points. Add to that we've often run our players into the ground.

This is how we've been operating for a while now, so of course Rashford wouldn't mind playing through injury for his country when it's basically the same thing he's been doing for his club.

Tbh LW is the least of worries, more than content for him to take as long as needed and hope he comes back firing on all cylinders again.

He's been productive despite carrying injuries for a fair while, rarely ever getting a rest and being so young. Logically, surely we can expect him to come back post surgery and rest and step up another level or two.

I don't mind players going a handful of games through injury. Sometimes, it's best not to lose them as an option in a critical period of the season.

But going on for years playing with an injury? Man that's just dumb and it's a failure of planning from both club and player

it's the best time for him now we got Sancho. Even if massively underused and thrown under the bus by Southgate, it was important for him to go so I don't blame him. Fingers crossed he comes back stronger and we see the original Rashford full of energy, the fearless character:-)

Let him take as much time as he needs to recover. It’s difficult to watch him play through pain so much, and it’s clearly affecting his form. Let him do what he needs to do to get back to 100%.
