Do we really need Haaland when we have Greenwood ?

If Haaland signs, that definitely will hinder Mason's development . No, I don't agree that he can play on right. He will need games as a striker and not as a winger.

Haaland is 21 and Mason is 20.

Haaland scored 13 goals in Bundesliga at the age of 19 while Mason scored 7 in EPL at the age of 19.

Haaland doubled his tally to 27 Bundesliga goals at the age of 20. Let's see how will Mason fare this season.

Just to put things into context, Kane scored 21 epl goals at the age of 21.

So if Greenwood is a superstar in making, he need games as CF and that won't happen with Haaland signing.

What do you think ?

It's a one-sided competition right now. Would it remain the same in the next 4-5 years? I'm not sure. But there's a big gap at this moment.

Haaland holds scoring records in the Champions League as well as an absolutely ridiculous goal average in the Bundesliga.

I have a soft spot for Mason but today this feels like an easy answer: We want Haaland. The beyond brutal physicality of Haaland and effective shooting makes him a mix between Zlatan and Lewandowski. I'm not sure we can find a better striker for the next decade in world football. Except for Lewandowski the next 2-3 years

I like Greenwood, but Haaland is so far ahead at the moment. We are talking about a young striker who could bully any defenders at his will, and could guarantee 40 goals a season, and may even have the potential to break a few records in future.

at 18:
Haaland: 17 goals in 35 games (Norway, Europa)
Greenwood: 17 goals in 49 games (PL, Europa)

at 19:
Haaland: 44 goals in 40 games (Austrian, BL, CL)
Greenwood: 12 goals in 52 games (PL, CL, Europa)

at 20:
Haaland: 41 goals in 41 games (BL, CL)

I don’t think you need to worry yourself this year. Next year you better have three big checks, a massive sign on bonus, a stupidly large check for Raiola, and a large check for Alfie.

Why does everybody seen desperate to declare that any attacker showing any promise needs to "play through the middle" to develop?

Would you say Son, Mane or Salah have been hindered by not playing "centre forward"?

For me, Greenwood would be wasted at CF. Especially in the PL, that role consists of lots of fighting with CBs, trying to win headers and holding the ball up, dropping deep, running in behind relentlessly even when the ball is not coming etc...

In my opinion, when you have someone who is quick, two-footed and technically very good, you want them on the ball as often as possible. For me, certainly in the foreseeable future, that means Greenwood from a wide forward position

Haaland is lightyears ahead at the moment.

This all feels like the "do we really need Haaland when we have Martial" calls around 18 months ago.

I would like to see how Greenwood does this season before deciding on if we should go in for Halaand or not. If it's an average season like it was for his last year (even though he ended it well and only an injury stopped him from going to the Euros), then we should definitely look into Haaland especially with this reported £65m release clause becoming active! He is a £150m+ player!

If Haaland has another phenomenal season again and gets around 40 goals I feel we should go all out for him imo.

If we get our midfield and defence sorted out this year, then next season we would only potentially need a new GK and a striker if Cavani leaves and Haaland is the ideal replacement, unless Greenwood has an exceptional season this year.

I think majority of United fans would want Greenwood, an academy product to kill it this coming season and bag 20+ goals and show he can be our long-term striker. But as mentioned earlier, if Haaland has another blinding season compared to Greenwood, if we are serious to get back to the top, we need to act like a big club and go all in for Haaland.

for all Greenwoods promise as a striker he has impressed me more playing out wide so far

I'm not convinced striker is his best position yet..

I would definitely want both at the club, no question

I don't think he needs games as a CF. There's nothing wrong with him developing as a wide forward, either on the right or the left. We'll find out in the next year or so if he's more suited to the CF role. And if he isn't, we'll just have to settle for him being a world class wide forward.

Maybe longterm Greenwood could be our RW? He can go on the inside and shoot or he can go on the outside and cross the ball in. He can still get 20-25 goals in his position and get a good number of assists. Haaland can be our 30+ goals striker and Sancho from the LW can be our creator who also can chip in with a good amount of goals. Now that is mouthwatering

It's a tough one because in a sense we could almost guarantee more immediate success if we signed Haaland but I honestly feel that bleeding games into Greenwood is a smarter long term call. He's a genuinely special talent and you don't sit on a talent with that kind of ability. With Haaland you just feel Raiola will bend us over and flog him off to Spain within 2 years of signing.

Haaland is one of the best CFs in the world while we're still trying to figure out if Greenwood can actually play CF....

I ...err.. no.

Haaland has already done what we think Greenwood is capable of. Let's first have Greenwood match the goals scored and then have this conversation. Its possible that we may not need to go after Haaland after this season if Greenwood takes off but this thread is way too premature even then.

Why would anyone wonder what will happen to Player X if we buy Player Y, all we need to worry about is to have best player to play for us if we buy Haaland and he is better then Greenwood then great if Greenwood is better then great also. Who cares who is gonna be our striker as long as he is good, having 2 talents fighting each other will only bring the best out of them.
Right now Haaland is 150 mln player easily, I would value Greenwood like 1/3 of that at best. If we never buy Haaland and Greenwood reaches the level Haaland is playing right now i will be over the „full” moon.

In fairness, Haaland played CF. Greenwood played RW. Let’s forget about Messi and Ronaldo for a second because wingers don’t usually score more than 10-15 a season. I don’t even remember Ribery or Robben doing it consistently and they were considered world class.

I agree. He hasn’t shown any of that. He doesn’t press and he plays out in front. Does he header? Run the channels? Hold up the ball? Bring others into play well? Right now he would be about as effective as playing Rashford there but at least Mason can go either side to make space for a shot. Haaland is on a different planet.

He’s a two footed shooter on the wing and unless I’m missing something I think that’s where he’ll end up staying

Greenwood is a 20 goal a year player. Haaland is a 40 goal per year player.

Also, Greenwood - much like Rashford before him, is not a superstar in the making. Haaland likely is.

How anyone can think think that Greenwood is even close to as good as Haaland is crazy. I mean, it's hard to believe.
Why is it so hard to believe?

Haaland is further along in his development right now but that doesn't mean Greenwood won't catch up. Greenwood has struggled to cement himself as our number one striker as he's competing with established strikers like Cavani, Rashford Martial, whereas Haaland's position is relatively uncontested.

I'm hoping that will change this season with the right-wing position now secure with the arrival of Sancho, allowing Rashford to concentrate on making the left flank position his own - with a little competition from Martial if he stays - which in turn allows Greenwood to fight it out with Cavani as the sole central striker. The former will have made the position his own by the end of the season, I'm sure of it.

Well,

If Greenwood can develop physically and become the 2nd coming of RVP the main striker, he can be the world's best. Do we need Haaland at that point? Of course, I think both of them can play together.

We have no idea what Greenwoods ceiling is tbf. He was 18 and scored 15 odd goals, its a stretch to think thats where he levels out
Hes also barely played as CF for a start.

I don't think there's anyway anyone can say this with any degree in certainty. Greenwood has the body of a typical teenager growing into the body of a man. Haaland is a physical freak of nature who was more developed at 17 than most are at 30. Greenwood likely won't reach Haaland's level, but we're also probably years away from seeing Greenwood's physical ceiling. I'd also be shocked if an 18 year old scoring 19 goals in a season doesn't take that up a few levels throughout his career.

He's an excellent finisher for his age. I just don't see the world class ruthlessness in him as I do Haaland. We should be breaking the bank and them some to get him.

What is this? We aren't even linked with Haaland are we?

I love Greenwood but right now Haaland is the better prospect and player.

Actually Greenwood plays better at RWF than as CF for us. Last season, he has only scored 1 goals in 6 games as CF, as compared to his 5 goals in 15 games as RWF.
