Why don’t you stump it up instead? It’s only 5m.

He’s quoting Marca though and not his own information. Is Marca reliable? Luckhurst has said the deal has been so advanced. Which do you believe?

Surprised another club hasnt thought about hijacking this deal. Im going to put money on that Chelsea will get him over us as London is more attractive and 2, they have an actually elite level manager.

oc there's no guarantee he will go to us in 12 months time. But Madrid lose the transfer fee either way.

To over simplify, Madrid has to calculate how much Varane's services are worth for an additional year, minus his salary for that year, plus the cost of any direct new replacement. If it is more than our offer then they don't sell. So it all comes back to the accountant.

So who would they replace him with? Do they need to buy?

This thing about another team hijacking the deal has to stop. Go on, put your money on it and show us your bet slip on here

United have been working on this transfer for a decade. We’ve been in his ear for the last few years and he knows how badly we want him and he wants us. No other club can offer him that.

And now we play the waiting game
Yeah may as well get sleeping bags down until nearly the season starts, thought Ole wanted him in for the first game but when you see stuff like this I have serious doubts that's gonna happen now

We’ll dither, Chelsea will pay up, then we’ll announce Phil Jones’s testimonial.

I like the haggle. It's a matter of principle, why shouldn't we be entitled to good deals or bargains simply because we're United?

We hold all the bargaining power given Real's financial circumstances. If news are to be believed, I hope he leaves for free next summer.

Sounds like a standoff.

United doesn't actually have that much leverage because even Florentino is smart enough to understand that you need a new CB this summer. The threat to wait a year to sign Varane (or a pre-contract in January, no real difference) isn't credible. On the other hand, Real obviously wants the money and doesn't want him to leave for free.

So Real need to sell him and United really want to buy him. Leverage is basically equal and the two clubs will posture and piss around for a few weeks then cut a deal sometime in August.

I've said from the start, it will be 60 million euro's, pay the money, it's still discounted and he's better (way better) than what we have to partner Maguire with.

Nope, we can sign him for free in January.
What do people mean when they say this? He won't be able to play for us until 22/23 season if we miss out this summer, what use is it to us getting a pre-contract done in January if he can't play?

That’s where I’m at, put forward your best offer, put a time frame on it and move on if it’s not accepted. We can’t wait around

But we can sign him then, playing is a different matter?

United also needed Sancho last summer but had no problem waiting another year for his price to come down.
