But that's a new contractual agreement, it's not a case of unilateral termination. In the case of Barcelona we are talking about a scenario where the players and the club don't find an agreement.
I guess I got kind of confused. Sorry!
Yes, unilateral termination requires a clause, laesio enormis, breaking of contractual duties and stuff like that when it comes to temporary contracts.

Nobody hates him. Stop with such dramatic nonsense.

I for one just can't stand the cut if his jib. Plus his tax evasion stories plus playing for Barcelona plus scoring against us in a CL final and so on. So yeah I'll never get warm to him at all. And now he's joining one of the most dislikable teams around. Very fitting.
Not being dramatic at all. I’ve read the comments in the previous pages. There is hate for the man from some. Hence why I’ve brought it upon myself to make my post.

I don't agree with you. Changing a contract (paycut) or in worst case terminate contract can be done in some way. There are lot of legal documents that explains what would happen and how. If Barcelona don't decide to sell few players wich would be best. I think Messi would and could have stayed if he wanted to beacuse there are lot of solutions.
You can't just change a legally binding document. Unless the player has legally violated the contract you can't just deck them in wages and terminate it without having to the player the full remaining value of the contract which again would mean paying the player the full value of the contract without getting anything in return and losing a potential transfer fee. Even if Barcelona wants to sell players they can't sell them unless the players want to change clubs.

Yeah so Messi doesn't run Barcelona. Only on redcafe will he be blamed for their defence conceding 4 and their president running their finances into the ground. He's the one person at that club who throughout this mess has peformed at a genuinely high /exceptional level and carried that club, and hence is worth a huge outlay.
168 million $ per year
And you are telling me he wasn’t to blame?
When he signed that, he only thought about himself and as much money as possible. So there isn’t any love and care for the club.

He is the one who sucked the blood out of Barca’s body, of course signings of Griezman, Dembele and Coutinho didn’t help. But they don’t claim to be in love with Barca either as Messi claims.

No one forced Barcelona to pay him or those other players that. Never blame the employee for what they're getting paid if it's legal. Always blame management for being incompetent in agreeing to it.

Depends on whether he thought the club could actually afford or not, right? And even then, very rarely is there just one side to blame when a bilateral contract is signed. Those are cases if predicaments are used

What's going to change in the next few week for them to be registered? Have they said?
They have to sell players and get players off their books or workout a deal legally to lower wages for their current players.

When he signed that contract in 2017, Barcelona could afford it and the salary cap rule wasn't a thing. Also Barcelona can still afford his wage, they are by some distance the club with the highest revenue, the fact that after 2017 they decided to agree to stupid deals after stupid deals is on the club not Messi.
I can totally understand if people say that out of principle Messi shouldn't earn that much but it's important to remember that Barcelona could and still can afford it, it means that they shouldn't have purchased the likes of Coutinho or Griezmann but they didn't need them in the first place and neither contributed to Barcelona's success.

After 21 years, yes I can imagine it's emotional and a sad end to a relationship that should have seen both parties walk away with far more dignity than has occurred

Solid wum
i was being a bit extreme but honestly they've been very poor, and would have been slaughtered here.

Martial and especially Rashford's best seasons are much better than their best at Barca, and Martial's last season was comparable to Coutinho (useless)/Dembele (permanently injured). Once you add in the fees, no contest.

e - Griezmann had 13G/7A last season, decent, but not 100m, and not even close to martial/rashford in 2019/20. Dembele and Coutinho's best seasons were both 8G/5A.
Their worst were 9G/4A, 1/0 and 2/2. Martial's worst were last season, 4G/3A and Jose's first season, 4G/5A. He's hit double figures in 3 seasons, which Griezmann has done once and Dembele and Coutinho have never managed.

It's funny how so many fans in football comment against the employee and always side with the employers, as if most weren't employees themselves who have or will get screwed over at some point in their life by said employer.

Existing players are grandfathered in, and the Messi thing is because his contract expired and he would be a 'new signing' and excluded from any grandfather provisos?

Is this the gist of it?
That's my understanding

That's what I understand, the strange thing is that it seems that Barcelona didn't make their final offer in time. Which is baffling.

I love Messi but the crying was a bit ridiculous. If he really wanted to stay, he could have accepted a lower salary or been a bit more flexible. He and his family are already set for life.
It's sad he won't get the send off his career deserved.
I’ve worked with people who have left he company after 8/9 years who have been a bit teary at their leaving do. He’s been at that club for the last 21 years, I think we can excuse him being a bit emotional considering it’s theres more emotional investment in his job that most.

I said a couple of days ago, I think the entire thing has been engineered to allow Messi to leave the club without Camp Nou being set on fire.

It's possible because the best thing for Barcelona was to let him go and fix their wage bill without the pressure of matching Messi's ambition. Now the issue is that Barcelona are without a doubt the most mismanaged club in the world; so I'm skeptical when it comes to their ability to have a master plan.

Thank you.

That is weird.

Maybe Barca had some limp assurances that an exception would be made not because it's Messi but because La Liga would understand that a deadline for Barca would paradoxically strengthen Messi's hand and result in upwards wage pressure which would be the opposite of what they're going for.

Or maybe this:

I said a couple of days ago, I think the entire thing has been engineered to allow Messi to leave the club without Camp Nou being set on fire.

Did they threaten to leave just a year ago before signing a ridiculous contract though

You know it’s possible to separate the financial circus from the person? It just takes a tiny amount of emotional intelligence. It really doesn’t matter what his reasons for leaving are, the fact is that he is leaving and think about the memories he is leaving behind. It‘s not hard to understand why he’s in tears.

He’s got a better chance of winning the CL next season with PSG than he did with Barça.

I just doubted that the people you've worked with tried to engineer a move away at least 3 times as well

Have you ever met a person who decided on divorce to actually be sad and sentimental about it?

Also apart from trying force a transfer last summer, when has he ever done it before?

How can that be if wages are higher than turnover?

I mean, that's surely up to him isn't it?
He has a family that don’t want to leave Barcelona. I should think that would severely limit his already slim pickings. It’s only in a world where oil and state-funded clubs don’t exist that Messi leaving Barcelona could trigger “normal“ clubs. What he is comes at the greatest premium in football, and rightly so, wouldn’t you say?

Because that's only true for 2020 due to covid, outside of it it's not higher than their revenue. Also they can perfectly afford his wage if they don't have the likes Coutinho and Griezmann who weren't needed and cost them an absolute fortune. Keep in mind that Messi contract predate those deals.

100% Barca should be blamed but those wages are just insane.
You can't use 100% to quantify in a sentence that includes "but".

Posters blaming Messi for Barca's financial woes are having a right laugh. It's not because of Messi that Barca are in the hole. It's because of the deals for the likes of Coutinho, Dembele, Griezmann etc. They got their trousers pulled down on the Neymar deal (albeit they got a huge fee for it, which they duly wasted) and spent the next 4 years trying to play big boys in the market, repeatedly overpaying and handing out insane contracts. Messi's contract was so high in part because they demanded a prohibitively high buyout clause to avoid another Neymar issue. The release clause of 300 million was suddenly deemed too low so they demanded it be 700 million. There was a lot of mitigating circumstances and nuance to consider about that contract, but you largely won't find that out amidst the Messi bashing hystericals.

There's a reason Rossell was in jail and Bartomeau will possibly go as well. Both were horrific custodians of the club and are squarely to blame for the mess the club find themselves in.

There are but Barcelona aren't in this situation. Barcelona can afford the current players, they simply can't register them due to other rules, that's a mismanagement from the club but it's not a force majeure case like for example a drastic diminution of revenue due to enforseen events that would prevent the club from being able to afford the players. Barcelona can play with the current registered players, the players already registered are exempt from the new registration rule.
So this answered my unanswered question earlier. Messi could have stayed if he signed the extension when he's still under the previous contract.

New question is which side has more responsibility on the delay? Messi side to wait and see whether Barcelona would purchase new players? Or Barcelona for not agreeing to lowered wage demand?

Loïc Tanzi of RMC Sport has gone into full muppet mode and is tracking plane flights from Barcelona to Paris. I didn't think he'd get that giddy.

Apparently it's Barcelona that delayed it for some reason.

Calling it now, if Messi goes to PSG I think we'll see him and Ronaldo on the same team in a years time.

Remember guys, it's just a ploy to pressure La Liga into accepting Barca to have over 100% of their revenue go into wages.
