Leeds United Football Club (commonly known as just Leeds, and nicknamed The Whites and The Peacocks) is an English professional football club based in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire. Leeds United's predecessor club, Leeds City F.C., was formed in 1904, but was forcibly disbanded by The Football League in 1919 in response to allegations of financial irregularities regarding illegal payments to players during the First World War.Shortly after the disbanding of Leeds City a new club, Leeds United, was formed on 17 October 1919, under the management of former player Dick Ray. They began playing in the Midland League, taking the place vacated by Leeds City's reserve team. Yorkshire Amateurs, who occupied Elland Road, offered to make way for the new team.

In March 1961, the club appointed former player Don Revie as manager, following the resignation of Jack Taylor. His stewardship began in adverse circumstances andonly a win in the final game of the season saved the club from relegation to Division Three. Revie implemented a youth policy and a change of kit color to an all-white strip in the style of Real Madrid, and Leeds won promotion to the First Division in 1963–64. Subsequently, however, they emerged as a major force in English football, winning 2 First Division titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and a Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Their second noteworthy spell began in the late 80s with the appointment of Howard Wilkinson. In 1989, the signing of Gordon Strachan from Manchester United for £300,000 proved to be a turning point. The Scottish midfielder was named captain, and helped Leeds win the Second Division in 1989–90 and gain promotion back to the First Division. Under Wilkinson Leeds finished fourth in 1990–91, and in the 1991–92 season they won the title of the last Division 1 as top tier. Ironically, the sale of Eric Cantona to Manchester United proved to be a turning point for his new club in a reversal of fortunes, and Leeds never won a league title again through the Premier League era.

Leeds United have rivalries with several clubs, including local rivalries with Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Bradford City and Huddersfield Town, and national rivalries with Manchester United (arguably the strongest of them all), Chelsea and Millwall. Alex Ferguson spoke on the rivalry between Leeds United and Manchester United stating that playing against Leeds was a "frightening experience... I have always said Liverpool versus Manchester United games are fierce in many aspects. Sometimes supporters can play a bad part in that particular game. But it never reaches the levels of Leeds United. Never." Leeds play their home games at Elland Road.

We've done well against them recently. Their style plays into our hands and Bielsa isn't the most adaptable. Start our usual back five in defense, degea , awb, Maguire, lindelof, Shaw. Okay with whatever midfield and attack as long as james doesn't start( though he probably will). No points for style, let's start with a solid three points. Clean sheet will be a bonus.

Bielsa is very adaptable. He made a mistake first game but in the return fixture they played defensive and got a point. They have excellent record against top 6 teams.

Leeds is the worst to come up against if we are not match fit.

Leeds have had a torrid pre season. Looks as if they aren’t up to speed themselves

James had a great game against them last season, I'm expecting him to start alongside martial and greenwood. This is a real test given the lack of match fitness in the squad. We need a good start.

Get the win however - result is only thing that matters in these first few games. Performances will take a bit considering several forwards are still going to be working on fitness.

Bring on James, Sancho, Dalot and Fred to overwhelm them with workrate and pace when Leeds are tired. I hope Varane starts, although I might be too optimistic here. Can´t wait for us to get going :keano:

Expecting a similar side to the one that played against Everton. Only changes I could see might be in the midfield.

    de Gea
    Wan-Bissaka Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    Pogba Fred
    Greenwood Bruno James
    Martial
    -----
Heaton; Dalot, Varane; McTominay, Matic, van de Beek, Mata; Sancho, Cavani

You're right, for some reason i thought we won both games last year. The point was at Elland road at the height of the super league drama and we were the better side although we didn't create much iirc. Lets just win, i'd hate to start off the season dropping points at home.

I think Matic has had a better preseason than Fred. But Leeds high intensity is going to force Ole to put Fred in the middle.

And although Elanga has been better than Pogba, we're obviously going to go with seniority.

Elland Road is full of sheep.

That's the level of contribution I am making to this thread.

Why are so many predicting that James would start? Would be counter productive to all the transfer business we’ve conducted.

Any idea why Cavani is training at home?
Cavani have had some time off after the tournament this summer, but I think he´s supposed to be back today (Ole said after the weekend). He looks to have been training hard on his own, and I think there is a chance he´ll start against Leeds.

    What other options are there?

Martial, 45 minutes of action in the last 5 months
Pogba, 45 minutes of pre-season action
    Rashford injured
    Elanga injured
    Amad and Cavani whereabouts unknown
    Lingard isolating due to Covid

People and perhaps even Ole are overvaluing pre season after a international tournament.

Pogba and Sancho will be plenty fit. Atleast enough so that there better than James.

Pogba has often had zero pre season and started.

Pogba looked no where near ready against Everton and Leeds will be a lot more up for it than they were

He'll be fine. Better than James anyway. Chap was useless against Everton and that's with a pre season.

    We have limited options.

Also it's probably harder to come on at half time into a game that's pace is already set.

I don´t think we can conclude on that just after those 45 minutes where he was little involved. I´d rather have him on the left wing than James.

Thank fook! Feels like an age since that EL Final defeat. Going to be interesting how we line up against them, I feel James' pace and Martial's dribbling ability will be vital against these with their high tempo man marking and open the space for Greenwood to find his range. Could be a crazy scoreline again, being first game of the season.

    Can't wait!

I think Ole will go with:

    .................... De Gea

    Bissaka - Lindelöf - Maguire - Shaw

    .......... Donny .......... Matic
    ................ Fernandes

    Greenwood - Cavani - Pogba

I think our squad is great as it is, I really do.

Sure, we could use a DM and more depth in certain positions. All other teams have weaknesses too though.

What makes me confident and optimistic is the fact that we got Varane to complement an already good defence. Champions League bloody Varane. As for going forward, a more settled Cavani, Sancho bringing unpredictability back and all other players more seasoned than last year. Add to this a hopefully recovered Rashford back to his best and the arguably most efficient attacking talent in the world (imo) in Greenwood with lots of output untapped.

We also seem to have improved tactical know-how and coaching, which should cut out unnecessary mistakes and costly goals that didn't help last season.

    Exciting times!
