How did he get on today? The lack of posts in here suggests not great.
Derby County had more possession than us in the first half, and Levitt looked like he got on the ball more. Garner didn't really do anything.

Thing with him is he's capable of hitting an occasional long pass and having a shot from range, but every time I've watched him for the first team he just looks so far off the level. He's young of course, but pretty much nobody goes from being that raw at his age to being a key midfielder for United level. I'm not sure if he has the level of technical quality required tbh. The passing and touch is too inconsistent, when that stuff should stand out if he had enough of it. But also he doesn't always have that constant movement/natural positioning to be a metronomic passer. I really get the feeling with him that people just want him to be a player that he just isn't.

I swear I could even see posts like sell Pogba and keep him in the first team he's ready to take his spot. Garner is no doubt talented and it would be stupid to write him off after today's game but him being timid is a bit worrying. I am not too worried about his skills more about his menatlity which looks a bit weak to me, if he wants to achieve something he needs to handle that pressure and take the responsibility.

But also playing with grandpa Matic, who can barely run, Mata who can barely run and other insecure kids in a first game of the preseason won't help.

Should go out on loan, definitely again, championship again or premier league possibly would be a good move for him. He could take as much as two more seasons to get going as CM/DM, which are barely starting games for EPL teams so young, let alone top clubs..

Midtable Championship is not good enough for next season. Either he goes to a Championship club that is expected to play in the PL next season or to a PL club. He needs a loan.

Im not saying he is ready but that was the first game of pre season in exceptional heat. Writing him off as a squad player this year is premature, at least give him the rest of pre season to get going. Personally, I'd have him stay and get minutes throughout the season. I think he is ready for that, certainly not a starter though.

Thought he played ok, kept it fairly simple but looked confident on the ball.

I don't see how putting a timid player into a PL team that will get battered week in and out would do him any favors. It seems like a competitive Championship side is where he should go, then if he performs next season should be loan to a PL side so he eases into the league and then if* he's ready he's a squad option for us

He has grown physically in last few months. From training pics he is looking taller and stronger now

Anybody know if Forest are a chance to move up the table in the championship this year? He did well under Hughton and if they are a chance to improve and move up the ladder again it might pay to send him back there, perhaps with another academy player that would also get game time there. How good would it be to have him and Hannibal or Elanga there and start to gel well together?!

He will most likely go on loan this season, I hope we can find him a PL loan where he plays most games though.

The last thing we want is him to go on loan and play 10 games all season at most. If that's the case the championship will be a better place. Forest want him anyway.

I think he was the player to set up Elanga with the 1v1 chance but I stopped watching after that.

Only watched the highlights but thought he could have done better defensively for two of the goals. He was too far away from his midfield partner for the first, once they got past him he should have been there to close down.

for the second he should have again been much more aggressive in closing down.

Doesn't sound too promising.

Reckon his Notts Forrest performances could be enough to bag him a Premier League loan?

He was apparently fantastic for them but I don't see what going back to the Championship for another season would achieve. Not sure what we'd find out.

Eh, in all honesty I’d take a Championship loan if it’s for a side who’s very likely going to finish in the playoffs/compete for the title over a PL loan. At least there he’s playing with more onus to win rather than simply survive.

Agree. Dont get why so many in here feel it is important that he plays at the highest possible level. The Championship has produced so many great players the last few years. Some of them older than Garner. For him to play in a physical, competetive league would be great.

Why risk putting him at a level where he could easily end up on the bench if things dont work out from the go? At Nottingham he would probably be a key player.

I also think it can be good for young players to be able to develop with a bit less attention. Seeing Blackett at every training session could probably be a good reminder for him to keep working hard.

He didn't get game time at Utd, he now gets not enough game time in the championship. He is most likely not a top youth product. High hopes for this player are most likely unwarranted.

This and there’s also a far greater chance if they get promoted they’ll give him PL games the following season. He doesn’t look ready for a PL loan whereas players like Elanga and Pellistri look like they are.

Good to see him get on today, thought he was tidy and a more solid partner for Fred than Pogba.

I don't think he's quite got it. Think he'll do well to have a solid Premier League career. Don't see him doing it at the top end...

Be a shame if he goes because I think he's a talented young player.

Clearly doesn't see a pathway into the team.

Bit odd considering how many chances we give youngsters.

He's looking at the mess the likes of Pereira is in and realises tying himself to us only to be on a loan merry go round cause the club won't sell for a decent fee, is maybe a bad idea...

I like that he backs himself and doesn't want to be perennially loaned out. Hope he can live up to his ambitions. Here or elsewhere.

His preseason has been a bit of a shame. While performances are not really important for established players, it was a chance for him to catch the eye and say to the manager he can't really consider anything but giving him an opportunity. That hasn't really happened, very limited opportunities.

He is clearly holding out for the wages that he has seen Williams and the like get.

I would let him go, I dont see a PL club signing him even on a free or even match the wages we probably offer.

Was quite underwhelming during pre-season.
Cant really use 20 minutes in a dead game as a indicator. I agree he's looked ike he's playing within himself, but he's better than that.

I actually think he's another Pereira, talented but struggles to make the step up.
