Reading that Phil Jones refused to give #4 to Varane - and started thinking - I genuinely can't remember a game he's played in the last two seasons. He's contracted with us for another two. Unreal shit.

It's a total joke that he didn't hand over the shirt. What does he even need the number 4 when he hasn't played a single game in almost 2 years.

And we are stuck with the useless clown for another 2 seasons because ole was actually stupid enough to give him a new contract.

Everyone knew he wasn't good enough and finished but we can't let go of players who are finished for some reason.

He must have zero self respect if he doesn't want to go somewhere to actually play football. Just like Mata, Lingard and Perreira.

I think the club did the right thing asking Phil Jones, but there is no version of events where he should've walked away from that meeting still holding on to the number 4 shirt. Does Phil have delusions about coming back and actually playing for United as our number 4? Surely not.

The club did not say that he refused to give it up. Let the man go away in peace.

I just remember one game where he played centre forward for Sheffield United against us a couple of seasons back, then one in the Cup against Tranmere (think he even scored - for us!).

I can`t see anyone asking Jones to give up his number unless he wasn`t going to be selected in the squad for the season. I also doubt Varane is that bothered .

Do the club not pick the squad numbers? Surely if they wanted to / it was that important to Varane they could have just taken number 4 and given Jones a lower number. The fact they didn't tells me Varane is content with the number he has.

Don't you know how to give respect to a senior player who is still with us? Shame on you plastics.

Senior player? I hope this is sarcasm. What has Phil Jones contributed of note to the club that another average Premier League player wouldn't have. He hasn't played enough games to be considered a senior player. He should never have gotten his last contract either. Talk about entitled. Varane should have been given the number.

I've been a critic of Ole's but he was interim manager when Jones got his new contract. I don't think it was his call.

It's easy to forget that Jones was an outrageous prospect when we signed him and he had a seriously impressive debut season. His career was destroyed by a disastrous accumulation of injuries and it's honestly sad as he was arguably a generational talent. I am sick of watching the poor guy being dragged through the mud and treated as a walking meme, especially as his career could have turned out very differently.

Guy's had his career derailed by injuries, he keeps working to get back to fitness, but his body seemingly doesn't want to cooperate with him. Shit like that can take a massive toll on your psyche.

As for the bolded: Have a word with yourself. Guy's basically had to abandon all social media because people like you couldn't stop themselves from abusing him. For getting injured! And if you think interim managers are allowed to hand out contracts, I have a bridge to sell you.

Injuries aside he hasn't developed as a player in the slightest from that first season. The injuries no doubt hampered him but now we have hindsight i don't think he was ever going to turn into a top player. Mentally he's not got it in him.

I don't know if the shirt thing is true, but i would be genuinely happy if we cancelled his contract and paid him off. Get him out of the club and let him go somewhere else, if anybody will have him.

Not true. Just because he hogs the camera does not mean is the preeminent force in face making. A bit of hyperbole from you me thinks.

He wasn't an outrageous prospect. Varane was an outrageous prospect. Note the difference in quality. He got overhyped because he was British in the same way people here saw Jonny Evans as superior to Pique as young players. Of course the non-Brit became World Class and the other didn't.

He really was an outrageous prospect. Very different order of prospect to Evans. Just think back to Fergies comments about him and comparisons to greats like Duncan Edwards. Nobody talked about Evans in those terms.

If making faces was a sport Phil Jones would be the Lionel Messi of it.

Jones should stay over Bailly, 100%. Even injured, he is a bigger asset than the calamity of Bailly.

Hyperbole. Sir Alex wasn't infallible. Saw him play for Blackburn when we embarassed them. He was an OK player who was too highly thought of. He was nowhere near the young player that Rio was or even John Terry.

Please stop smoking @rack. It's a hallucinigen for a reason Not good for you, mate. Bailly shouldn't be here but at his best he is a far better player than Jones.

He’s wiping his tears with €500 notes, he’ll be just fine.

Can we please change Phil Jones profile picture. I know it’s a “meme” but let’s support of own. Even Bruno mentioned him post match interview when talking about our CBs to help Varane settle. Let’s just respect him for the few years he has left with us.

Why wouldn't Jones give Varane the number 4? It's not like he has commercial agreements wrapped up in his number like 7R7

I think he’s taking the piss. I checked on his Instagram account just to see how it looks like and I read lot of abusive comments. I think he’s staying and uninterested to find new club just to piss the fans off. I honestly think he should be thinking about his career like Smalling. Leave, looking for regular playing time, and enjoy football at his age. Imo he is still good enough to play for team like Newcastle. Watching Newcastle defense yesterday, I think Jones can improve them massively.

He could be an option and add to their depth. Improve them massively? No. Absolutely not.

Sure he´s dreaming of getting back on the pitch for United, and I see no reason to bash him for it, it being realistic or not. Giving away his shirt would be giving up that dream. I can understand him, in a way.

Phil Jones as a young "outrageous talent". That made my night. Brilliant  .

The lad needs to move on and try to play first team football elsewhere. Maybe a warmer climate might help his body and injuries.

To piss the fans off? That´s your take on it? Not because he wants to restore his name and reputation, because of all the abuse he has received the last few years? Honesty, I think you´re pretty far off.

This is the worst take I've read so far.

Just to piss of the fans....

Really??
