Playing well?
@Bebestation

He's playing well. He started on the right but seems to be roaming quite a lot which has seen him go wide, inside right and he got the assist whilst he was on the left.

But Birmingham are playing with a real tempo and are throwing plenty forward which really helps attacking players like Chong due to the extra options. It's also a enjoyable game to watch due to the end to end nature. Birmingham lead 2-0 with 38 minutes gone.

Thanks.

Would you be able to call him a midfielder or atleast a roaming one - or is he still playing the role of a winger?

I just ask because i can accept he has a new life in a new position, rather than the winger version of chong coming in to some life.

I've always said he was a play making winger who had the skillset to play a central role. I compared him to Di Maria in the past stylistically and I'm surprised it's taken the genius of Lee Bowyer to recognise that at first team level which has given the player freedom to play his game.

I think this loan could at the very least see us receive a decent amount of money in the way of a sale.

The interesting thing is that you could argue Pogba has been playing this on the left for us recently.

A playmaking winger who you can find roaming across the pitch especially to central positions as a midfielder.

Wonder if Chong has the ability to kick on or as you said atleast get us some few million in a transfer window.

Contract expires next summer with option for a further year. Finally realizing his potential when we wont get much for him.

I could be wrong, but I think it would be best for him to move from United due to the competition for places at the club. I can't see him being a first teamer as things stand but he could forge a very good career for himself elsewhere.

Chong with another assist after going on a 50/60 yard run straight through on goal after a Luton corner falls to him kindly with free space to run into. He's brought down but the ball falls kindly to the Brum player following up who taps into a empty net.

Yeah I agree with you but I just wonder if after this loan he may be viewed as a midfielder more than necessarily a winger.

I guess even then he has players like Hannibal to compete with which may be hard.

I think he'll always be viewed as a attacker/forward in a advanced role whether that be out wide or centrally. But he can do a job in various roles due to his very high work rate off the ball.

He's been subbed off in the 69th minute which is a good decision by Lee Bowyer after another good game from Chong.

Apparently had an insane game - got 9/10 from the local paper with the following :

How Blues have managed to sign Chong in the Championship is anyone’s guess. Absolutely everything went through the Dutchman and he was joyous to watch.

Hogan was the beneficiary of Chong’s brilliance with two goals put on a plate for him. Chong’s first assist was a delightful chip into the box, with his second a rapid run from well inside his own half that ended with Hogan getting a simple tap-in.

My boys got embarrassed today. We couldn't handle Chong. He looked different class.

Think Chong should make it permanent there if he keeps this up. He's found a place that he seems settled and really loved. He needs consistency now and lets face it he won't break through here.

Good luck to the lad!

Can't believe so many people in this thread are just talking about sale value and writing off any potential United career. He's still a young player and if he continues with this form then who knows how far he can go.

After a couple of failed loans, it’s great to hear he’s doing really well now. He’s still young enough to pick his career back up and this is a great start

If he keeps this up, I would recall him in January and loan him to a PL team who’ll play him every game

It would be a mistake and discourage other clubs to loan our players in the future. They do it not just to help us develop our players, but also to benefit from their performances :)

As Lee Bowyer said - what I have started to enjoy about him is the way he uses his wingers dribbling ability to get past players in more Central positions.

You also need to employ him the way they do. On the wing isolated, he'd be more ineffective. Plays the Di Maria way that season under Ancelotti when they won the decima

Are you saying Chong is a Championship level player?

Also astounded that so many people want to sell him. The same people would be annoyed we don’t produce our own quality players. Jesus wept.

It's easy to forget Chong is still only 21. It feels like he has been around forever! Encouraging to hear, it looks like we're making better use of the loan system this season.

Interesting. Happy for him for sure. Hopefully we can get a good price with a fat sell on/buy back or whatever. There’s no reason why he can’t play regularly at lower to mid PL level and if he keeps improving then who really knows? He needs end product and to use his brain a bit more but he’s a natural dribbler and runner. he was miles too good for u23s when he got going. Most of us could see there was something special there at that level and then the hype died right down for a while. Happy he’s making the jump to seniors and getting some love and recognition!

Looks like he will get kicked a lot in the Championship. Good for character building though.

One of the tweets I’ve just read from a Luton fan (granted they’re not exactly Real Madrid) said he’s the best opposition player he’s ever seen.

He looks absolute class playing centrally. Pace, can drive with the ball, good eye for a pass and provides lots of energy. If we sell him, he'll play for Bayern Munich in a couple of years, a'la Gnabry.

His mind looks quicker than what he’s facing in the Championship thus far. He sees the pitch and what he wants to do before, or as, the ball comes to him and is darting off wherever he wants to go instantaneously, leaving opponents for dead. Looks the same in terms of interceptions and getting across his man to make those stab-tackles - he’s one step ahead, like a player from a level up in the wrong division. If he keeps it up, he looks very likely to have a PL career.

I don’t see what the eagerness is to offload him; let’s see where this journey takes him, because if he keeps up his current level he is going to be one of the players of the Championship season, and if that turns out to be the case, it’d be negligent to not take a proper look at him next pre-season.

He’s performing like a potential Manchester United player on loan should; how is that not enough for some people?
