Sorry Cavani, you're a good player and all, but the Man Utd #7 basically is Ronaldo.

His return to the league is huge for both the club and the league. I could see special permission to change numbers being granted on that basis.

If there's no formal reason (in terms of registration and whatnot) preventing it, he'll obviously get his number. Again - Cavani doesn't give a feck.

CR7 - no problem.

Just feckin' deliver, lad.

(I really, really hope he does - it would be glorious beyond belief. And now I'm off to get seriously drunk - so good feckin' night).

Ideally Ronnie gets the 7 and Cavani the 9.

Another scenario that would be good is if Sancho gets the 7 and Ronaldo the 9.

I'm sure Cavani will be a good sport about it and give him the 7 shirt.

Sky reckon the rules say you can't swap a number once the season started unless you apply for "special dispensation" or the holder of the shirt leaves.

Unless "Ronnie likes 7" applies I suppose!

Not read through the whole post but, elsewhere on social media something about Cavani would have to leave or United would have to get special dispensation from the League to switch numbers at this point. Feel free to berate me if this has already been debunked.

Rio seems to have let slip. "What a man Cavani, giving up the number 7........maybe" went on to say he wasn't sure how registration was though, but his body language says he definatley slipped up.

The Premier League likes money. Having the most commercially successful player join and then screwing with the branding would be pretty weird from them.

Even if Cavani doesn't mind, he either has to leave the club or the FA has to allow it, which has not happened before.

is it the dusty fecks at the FA or the Premier League who decide?

if its the FA we have no chance, if its the PL, I think they may make an exception due to the commercial realities

I double-checked and it is the PL. Maybe they would allow it

Nowhere fast
Michael Jordan went with 45 on his comeback, and at the time I thought MJ would only wear 23, so CR7 might change for a season. Wouldn’t be unprecedented

Or maybe we could "sell" Cavani to an affiliate club, give Ronaldo the number 7, and resign Cavani the next day.
It's for this reason that the Premier League will totally be fine with the change. There are loopholes and it would be stupid of the PL to deny a simple change to avoid things getting silly, it would only make a mockery of the PL, not anyone else. Still, I don't really care what number players play with.

Maybe Ronaldo can wear the 7 shirt with Cavani's name on it. That would be a nice loophole.

The scenes if that club refuses to sell us back Cavani.

Cavani wears 21 for Uruguay. Ideal scenario is we feck Dan James off, give Cavani his number (21 is coming :nervous:) and give Ronaldo the 7.

I mean it sort of is special dispensation with Ronnie wanting the 7 isn’t it

I'm guessing it's already a done deal with Ronaldo getting the number 7. The way Rio announced it with such confidence, before realising his balls up that he'd announced some top secret information and did everything he could to act like he was just blindly guessing tells me he's getting it.

I’ve already got a Cavani #7 shirt.

I have historic bad luck with my shirts. I got an Ince shirt in March ‘95 and we sold him to Inter three months later.

I got an Anderson shirt in ‘09 after we won the CL. He was terrible the following season, had disciplinary problems, and ended up doing his ACL and missed half of it.

I got a Martial shirt at the start of last season, because he was good the year before. And he turned to absolute garbage.

This year I got Cavani, who’s going off to play international fixtures and will miss a lot of games, and now looks like he might lose his shirt number anyway.

Who should I curse next?

On the Rio Five video where he’s talking about his part in Ronaldo returning, he lets slip when he says “Cavani, what a guy btw, he knew and gave up the 7” then goes on to say “maybe!!” when he realises he messed up.

I think this will be a special case and the league will allow it.

Giving he him a new number will mean more shirt sales. All you peeps who kept your old shirts will buy new ones.

"CR77" works.
Haha this is what happened when he moved to Real with the old Ronaldo 9 shirts (as he only got the 7 once Raul retired)

I think if Cavani can be offered 9 he'll give up 7

His number for Uruguay is 21 surely he would take that if offered, Dan James should be looking for a new club anyway he isn't getting a sniff this season.
