Wolves has notoriously been the worst fixture of the season for us since they came up.

Yes they've become a bit more attacking and let Traore loose (with no end product) but I'm just happy we were able to come away with the 3 points, knowing full well it was going to be a shit game with shit performances all round.

Where in my post am I pretending that we don’t have a midfield problem? All I’ve said is that we won and that’s all that matters in the end
Except it's not the end. It's an ongoing problem. And we had to watch an awful game of football. Ole sounded awfully complacent in the post match interview.

It’s funny that, we won at OT 1-0 last year in time added. No one went ballistic

Win 1-0 away against a tougher Wolves and it’s A. meltdown

Everyone going on about it being a foul; no one even remembers Bruno being fouled right before the Soton goal.

Decisions even out over the course of a season.

Yes because we won a hard fought game it was complete luck. Mason just randomly hit the ball in the air and it just went in on its own.

What is with this attitude about our games that if its a competitive game its a disgrace? As though we have some divine right to win all games? When did we go from celebrating hard fought wins as a fanbase to be entitled that it wasn't a 65% possession xG hammering?
Hard fought win is always appreciated. Playing against Wolves who dominated most of the game and us winning by a piece of individual brilliance is luck. You seem to think as if we created the same amount of chances as them. Look at the stats of shots on goal and you'll know why people are calling it a get-out-of-jail win. No one called it a fluke, but we were lucky to come away with 3 points despite being the poorer team.

Like Sir Alex did when we got lucky 1-0s. Defend the team in public, save the criticism behind the scenes.

Would you rather be did a Jose?

Forgot to add that we are going to struggle if we don’t play McFred, we didn’t have a midfield at times today. Wish VDB is given a go there, Pogba belongs further up the field, he’s wasted in the centre.

So you’d rather seen us drop points today to match the performance?

Need a CM.. really need a cm.. sell players or borrow money if we dont have the funds
Can't decide if we need more of a DM who is positionally sound but can also pass through the lines or a tempo controlling CM who is confident on the ball

Yeah I don't get what he wants either to be honest. Then again he doesn't want us to sign Ronaldo either which explains alot.

I'm fully on board with the idea that we didn't play well though. My issue is with the idea that winning while being dominated is a disgraceful thing that requires questions being asked of the manager. If most of our games were won this way you'd have a point, but they're not. Do you think City last year didn't have any game where they didn't dominate and should have lost on xG but ended up winning? Were they lucky? How many times did we under SAF do that?

Maybe we're getting too hung up on the word lucky because of the broader connotations that word has. Maybe you could call it lucky, but then I'd argue that is par for the course in the Premier League and the fact that we still won is a point for Ole's management rather than against.

The rainbow's end
Smash n' grab win after an underwhelming performance. These are three big points after the draw at St. Mary's and right before the international break. It's always nice to enter these inactive fortnights without murmurs and grumbling in and around the club.

Tough game, overall. For yet another time, we didn't have any answers against high intensity press/closing down. The front-four were cut from the rest of the team and they were chasing lost causes most of the time. Credit to Wolves because they had done their homework. They anticipated that we were going to utilize both FBs higher up the pitch to compensate for the lack of penetration through the middle and they were killing us with balls down both wide channels. We were having a very hard time on the pitch and it seems that we were just waiting for their energy levels to drop off just to get a grip on the game. Which, eventually, was what happened at some point in the second half.

Congrats to the back-four and big Dave, they held their own. Varane had a convincing debute in the PL in a game where there was a lot of defending to do. Captain did reasonably OK, considering he had to cover for the most advanced of our FBs. Both AWB and Shaw were commited and they never stopped sprinting up and down the pitch. Finally, DDG made a miraculous save at the most crucial part of the game. He needs a confidence boost and we need his shot-stopping skills.

We looked slightly better in the middle of the park when Wolves couldn't turn on the volume off the ball any more. It's a very positive sign that Pogba wants to be involved and make things happen on the pitch for us. Fred, as usual, was running like crazy, which is a good thing when we play on the front foot, but it's a calamity when the opposition can find spaces to attack after they beat the initial press.

Sancho looked like he needs to spend a lot of time in the gym. He's a player who thrives on making things happen while running with the ball, but today he was just walking on the pitch. It was a performance that actually vindicated Solskjaer for not starting him until now and i guess he would have come on from the bench today too, if Martial had shown any kind of form last week.

Bruno had another bad game, but he'll refiscover his form. I wish people should stop complaining about James. We got the memo, he's not United quality. You have not rediscovered America, for crying out loud. We signed two players and we have another one coming from injury who'll make sure he'll stay on the bench more often than not. I was very pleased with Greenwood's goal. In the age of false #9s and inverted wingers, a classic forward's quality finish, his awareness and the touch to set the shot, remains one of the most beautiful things to watch on a football pitch.

The problems remain, but cheer up people. We broke a record in the toughest league in the world today and Ronnie will step on the pitch at OT in two weeks time wearing the red shirt!

Positives:
Varane was excellent.
Greenwood worked hard and showed his talent again.
Sancho and Cavani got minutes.
AWB and De Gea will take confidence in their match saving moments.
We played poorly yet won, all great teams have these moments.
It’s a much better 1st three games than last season.
Clean Sheet.
We are joint second.
New away record.
We’d have drawn this last season.

Negatives.
Fred was poor.
A few footballers had a poor game that we know they can do much better in. Fernandes, Pogba, Sancho.

I liked Jose's honesty, though I agree it was bad idea. Ole sounded disturbingly like the company guy who knows there is a problem but can't do much about it.

Errr no. I'm just saying it's not all that matters.
How is winning not all that matters? I literally don’t know what else you wanted today if it wasn’t the 3 points? You get the same 3 points if you win a league game with a good performance and the same if you win it with a poor performance. It’s not like rugby when you get a bonus point for scoring four tries.

Don’t you remember the Sir Alex days when we used to win ugly loads of times as well? Smash and grab 1-0 wins. It’s all about building that winning mentality. No matter what, keep fighting till the end to get those 3 points.

He was hoping to get a win, I guess?
I think expecting Wolves to continuing to rain shots on goal and break through the Utd midfield without resistance, without conceding was a pretty daft call, regardless of whether they won. Sometimes you get an outcome even though you play shitty odds.

Usually because they sit back and we can't break them down. That's more tolerable to win against than watching them run through the Utd team unopposed.

No point discussing it with that poster. He's got his red-tinted specs on. We were very lucky to get the win.
I think folks are having an issue with it being called lucky, and I somewhat agree.

Why is it luck and not skill that DeGea made two great saves and Wan Bissaka a great defensive block?

Why is it luck that their keeper made a great save in the first half, but Mason got the better of him with his second chance.

It's not like they had a wide open net and skied a chance while we scored off a deflection.

xG might have a story to tell, primarily to show which team was on the front foot, but in no way does it make us lucky, in my humble opinion.

Not looking to start an argument, I just don't agree with it being defined as lucky.

Opportunistic? Absolutely!

You can improve after a win when morale’s high; trying to do it when you’ve lost isn’t as easy. Ask Arteta
Yes winning is better than losing. You are right about that. But our problem isn't morale - it's the lack of a defensive midfielder.

I'm better than Messi (even though I'm not)
Got away with one there, couldn’t have had any complaints if we lost that. Today’s performance highlights once again that midfield is a priority, Fred is a fighter but his passing is comical at times. Varane looked solid and Sancho will come good but such is the standard now that every point is crucial, just cannot afford to fall behind the leading pack.

A few seasons ago, we lose that 100%

It wasn't pretty, and not altogether deserved, but winning games like that is the sign of... nope, not yet.

Very happy to sign Ronaldo. Just not as nailed on certain as some that it is going to work out well. I hope it does.

My point is we need a DM much more than we need Ronaldo.

Second half was a good but better.

Need a Midfield addition badly. I'd get someone to play beside Pogba and McTominay when Pogba is in the wing.

That's hardly ground-breaking news, is it?

Just be happy we came home with 3 points. Be positive, winning the scrappy games is the mark a title winning side.
