We legit sold Dan James so that Cavani can switch to 21 so Ronaldo can take 7

Nobody at the club would ever admit to it, and James did need to be moved, but the whole number 7 situation definitely factored into him being sold.
If the CR7 image brings loads of money, then it becomes a legit money decision.

We sold James because he's not even close to good enough and because we had a buyer.

And because it solves the 7 problem...he is the most marketable athlete on the planet, did you think we were gonna let him wear 37 or something?
If you think we sold James to give Ronaldo the number 7 shirt then I don't even know what to say.

Nah, we sold James as we have Rashford, Martial, James, Lingard, Greenwood, Sancho, Elanga, Mejbri, Amad and Pogba who can played on the wing. We didn't find a buyer who'd pay our valuation for Lingard, Amad got injured before his loan and we received concrete interest in James and an offer we couldn't refuse. Plus all the wages to factor in for all those who can be chosen for only two positions.

But sure, a shirt number was the big deciding factor in selling a player.

I've just read somewhere that once a player has started the PL season with a certain number he must keep it unless he is sold. PL rules apparently. That means Cavani can't give up #7 anymore. Not sure if true.

Selling james covers ronaldo transfer and bring our net spend back under £100mil which the club briefed would be the max spend this summer before the window opened.

I don’t understand the purpose of the rule, they’ll probably readily agree to swap the numbers. What does it even matter if they change it.

Exactly

Seems like a straight forward yes if United ask and both players agree

Presumably it’s for the benefit of fans who pay a lot of money for a player’s shirt with name and number.

If United get special dispensation in this case I imagine it will come with the requirement to offer a replacement shirt for anyone who now had a defunct name/number combination.

Not enough if people are still saying we sold James to free up the 21
It was said that discussion of the shirt number was part of the negotiations with Mendes, which is natural when it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo. If there is any player that owns the number 7 around the whole world, it's Ronnie.

Terminate Cavani's contract and re-sign him after we submit the form for Ronaldo 7 if we have to.

We can't promise Mendes / CR7 anything more than "we'll try" though.

Rubbish - he's not even the most iconic number 7 for United, nevermind the "owner" of the number worldwide

Storm the stadium if he doesn't get 7. We decide what number you wear.

To be fair, James been linked to moved away to Brighton and Leeds for months, James was probably considering to leave before the season even started but we are all know Ole wanted him to stay for squad depth.

True or not, it does us some favour at the end because we need to sell and we get to see players wearing their preference shirt number probably. I wish we can be more ruthless to some other deadwoods and players who are not being used so we can sell them and open space to buy players that can improve us or be used more.

Yar probably.
On the other hand, if I have this season's Cavani #7 shirt, I would treat it as a collector's item!

Ground for some brown envelopes to them whenever a team needs to do it, I guess.

Not sure if this has been posted before.
Obviously we can end Cavani’s contract and sign him again before the the window ends then. I doubt that the PL will make us go through that process which means more paperwork for them.

Err... we would have to pay up his entire contract first?

You need to understand CR7 is by far biggest ever sports brand in the world with over 335m followers in social media. It’s beyond iconic.

The number 7 is pretty much synonymous with Ronaldo nowadays.

His brand is massive. He has the most followers on Instagram last I checked. That is gigantic.

21 now free, would be a bit like RVP wearing 20 to win our 20th league title. I still like the idea of 77 and think he will have the 7 in the end but I wouldn't hate 21 either.
