Jamie Tartt looks and talks like Grealish, character is what I'd picture Foden to be like in an alternate universe.
Dani Rojas - Chicharito
Isaac - Ashley Williams
Roy Kent - Vinnie Jones
Colin - Andreas Pereira

Think you might have a swing and a miss on that one I'm afraid

How you could see Roy Kent as anyone but Roy Keane absolutely baffles me.

It's definitely gone too nicey nice. I'm not really sure why I keep watching it apart from it being incredibly simple.

It's not very well written though, and there are completely pointless characters like Coach Beard. I've already said I find the Roy Kent thing basic as hell. Anyone could've written that character. Also now they're shying away from any football aspects it's just some weird 'problem/lesson of the week' show now.

Sudekis described this season as their Empire Strikes Back but it feels more like the Star Wars Christmas Special. They need to add some more drama/conflict. Put these nice characters in harder situations. Right now it's cheesy as feck.

When Lasso brought back Jamie into the team I expect that to create division and some difficulties within the squad and within the wider club, but it was all dealt with very quickly.

Still enjoying the season but S1 was much stronger IMO - Roy Kent is cringe as feck and I hate the soccer Saturday segments.

Massive downgrade on S1 so far… and add another one to the “very obvious OTT Roy Keane parody isn’t funny anymore” brigade.

My wit's end
Although I only started watching this yesterday, I'm fully caught up now.

I see what people mean when they complain about it getting worse. It was even more obvious on a binge.

Last season, it was mean people learning to be nice. This season, it's nice people learning to be nicer. The show does seem to being losing some of its punch.

I don't get it with this show. I read a bit of the beginning of this thread and started watching it on the basis of that, but it's so mediocre. It's kinda watchable in that it's polished, it's simple, and if you like football, it's not like there's much competition for it. But the writing is so basic and poor at times, all the footballing aspects are incredibly dumbed down (I understand it's targeted at an American audience, so I get it), and the characters are so one dimensional it's painful. No nuance at all.

I don't really mind anyone enjoying it, but I don't get the hype or how it could get any nominations, let alone rewards. Feels very much like the emperor's new clothes to me.

The main selling point really is that it's nice, comfort blanket of a show.

Season 1 is basically about Lasso's infatigueable niceness winning people over in spite of themselves and that's largely how the show operated too. With so much misery around and TV having become dominated by anti-heroes, people warmed to a nice show about someone they liked (sort of) succeeding by being a good, nice person and getting those around them to be better people too. A bit like the Paddington films except with a cartoon american replacing the cartoon bear.

If you don't go along with that aspect of it though then there's not that much more on offer, especially in season 2. There's not particularly meant to be nuance as far as I can see, just good vibes.

I thought season 1 was fantastic. Just so likeable but there’s really nowhere for the show to go after that. Everyone in the club rooting for him just kills the entire premise of the show. What’s vexing me though is that I really like several of the characters and I want to keep watching because of that, but logically speaking, it’s really got nowhere to go unless Ted is under real pressure.

I think a good plot twist would be for Rebecca’s husband to win back control of the club or an investor to buy it out, with the new owners actively looking to get rid of Ted. We need that reconnection of skepticism about his role at the club, rather than everyone being so nice to each other.

I still like the show but it has to find a way of reinventing that “there’s no way he can succeed, he should never be here” vibe into the show again. Another route would be for the club to have a financial crisis and for them to lose all their good players and Ted having to coach a bunch of has beens and misfits who think he’s a wanker to avoid relegation and certain administration.

The show has become more about people’s personal lives than the football club, and that’s really put the superficiality of the show into the spotlight, when in season 1 that was really well glossed over with the crux of the story being about an American football coach in the PL.

I do disagree on the Roy Keane parody with most people in this thread though. I love Roy Kent and still find the whole schtick amusing. Very happy he’s back on the coaching staff.

Beyond the fool good factor, which feels more and more forced, it's a pretty shit show. Nothing about it seems real, it's just cliché after cliché on how Americans might perceive football, and it feels so far removed from what life at a real football club would be like, it's just stupid. The Roy Kent stuff is incredibly bad, both the writing and the portrayal (has that guy just come off the set from Eastenders or something?), and he's just the first in a pretty long line of poor performances. The coach Beard schtick got old about halfway through the first episode, and the football scenes are dreadful. There are some redeeming features, basically Jason Sudeikis and Juno Temple, but I'm still amazed at how popular and respected this is, which is probably why I'm still watching, like trying to find the key to this mystery. But it just seems to be getting worse and worse.

Genuinely think I could write an episode of this show.

It would probably be better than @simonhch's attempts above
Just off the top of my head you could probably have an episode where a player is the subject of a bid from another club. He plays poorly in a game and they're all like hmm why? whilst Ted makes some comparison to something in the USA (whilst Beard nods and says "Yep"). Meanwhile there's a side story where Keely and the owner woman (forgot her name) hold a surprise birthday party for Higgins or some shit. In the end Ted finds out about the transfer offer and after some thought and about 6 words from the counsellor woman he tells the player if he really wants to leave, he has his blessing and then says something like "We all just need to be happy in this world". The player says thank you and leaves but right at the end he changes his mind because of the kindness shown and he stays. All the players cheer as he comes back into the dressing room (likely on match day but is then somehow inexplicably thrown into the team despite team sheets already being in by that point).

No match footage is shown in the entire episode. Also Roy Kent has a sub-plot with a vending machine he smashes.

You forgot the biscuits Ted brings to the owner woman.

Just to add to the pile-on, did people laugh during season 1? I watched it, as it was undemanding, but don't think I laughed once. It's warm and inoffensive but completely witless.

Would love to know who the competition for that award was. The guy playing Roy Kent is basically a writer and part time actor, who got convinced to be in the show after joining as head writer.

In regards to this season, I think it's been OK. Nowhere near as good as S1, but not bad. I am starting to find Ted's character a bit annoying now though, as they have seemingly doubled down on the good guy shtick. I do agree in that it needs more football.

But even beyond that, it was utterly dreadful
Oh yeah it was shockingly bad. I remember turning to my partner at one stage and saying "This is f*cking terrible!", and we'd both been loving the show until that point. It's definitely not been the same since.

I tried to watch this show after some friends recommended it highly but I just couldn't get into it. I didn't think it was funny and the premise is unrealistically uncompelling for me.

I like Ted Lasso.
But people have been saying this about shows for well over a decade now. It was the whole appeal of Parks and Recreation. This is almost as old as anti-heroes!

Started this this week after being thoroughly impressed with Mythic Quest.

Enjoying it so far. It's more of a light hearted drama than a comedy though. Just feel good TV to have on while you're having your tea.

It's easy watching like Parks and Rec but with none of the humour or even mildly good jokes. Just bland nothingness with unrealistic characters you couldn't give two shits about.

The christmas episode was fecking horrendous.

Parks and Rec was actually very well written and was super funny. And the acting was all around great. It's nothing like Ted Lasso.
