Even Messi and Ronaldo could struggle to make an impact playing as a sub for 8 minutes let alone this lad. If you don’t give him a consistent run of games then obviously he is going to struggle to get up to speed with the league. That’s true for any player. Getting a start every 2 months isn’t going to give you a chance to make an impression.
Who gets a run of games when they look as terrified as VDB? They have to show at least something

Do you understand you're asking Ole to give a considerably more game time for a player who failed to make an impression whenever he was given chance? At the risk of us losing points ? Of him losing the dressing room? Even his own position? You're supporting United or VDB I must ask?

Highly unlikely if we're going for a DM and Haaland. I think Donny stays if Pogba does not renew.
We'll replace them both with a DM and new #8.

I don't anticipate a strong move for Haaland now that Ronaldo is here for a couple of years. He'll probably end up at City/PSG/Real.

Cavani is leaving. If we win something this year I can see us winning the battle for Haaland. I don't think he's going to PSG. It will be England or Spain and my money is on England so that leaves us, City, and Chelsea as potential suitors. I'd like to think we win that battle.

That means you can trust any foreign player and play them in the XI if not you will lose points cause they are not used to the league. And last I checks VDB played for United. They aren’t separate. So much assumption that if he plays we WILL lose points.

Think we will try really hard to get him next year regardless of who we have. Hopefully, United winning something or more would make us more attractive.

A lot of players are leaving us next year which will open up spaces and wages available to pay him nicely. However, dealing with his agent would be a different matter all together and the only but big obstacle that I can see for this transfer to happen.

I could understand fans citing the risk factor of giving Donny the chance to play himself into form if the performances in midfield were of a high level every week. But they simply aren’t. In fact we’ve been poor in midfield often even with our favored pairing of McT and Fred. Never mind with Matic on the pitch. So at the moment the risk is all but nonexistent with Scott out injured.

Yeah cause 4 starts in the premier league is good enough to judge a player? At least give him a proper chance before casting him out. I understand he was bought in as backup in case Bruno gets injured but why criticize him when we haven’t really give him a consistent run of games. Coming as a sub 15 times after the 82nd minute isn’t going to do shit for any player. Look at what a consistent run in the starting XI did for Fred.

If he was so shit at training as you guys claim and that’s why he isn’t getting a run in the team do you really think the staff would have put up with him for so long? A player can’t be shit at training for over 12 months!
I’m not casting him out at all. He made well over 30 appearances let’s not pretend he was completely ignored all season, in the vast majority of his game time last season he was dreadful and didn’t do anything to earn more minutes or even the trust of the coaching staff. I appreciate what you’re saying about needing a run of games but you’re not going to get a run of games if you don’t earn it & no one could argue he earned it last year.

This year may well be different, who knows. But I certainly find it baffling that people appear to want to slate our manager for wanting to keep hold of him when we didn’t have time to replace him.

Did you watch the Wolves game?
It was a miracle we were not down by at least two goals in the first half with our starting midfield so IMO starting VDB is not that big a risk.

Do you get the part deserved? Have you forgotten the West Ham match last season?

According to your ... logic we should also give the like of Pereira, Lingard, Jones, Grant, Mata, McShane etc. a looong run of games because guess what, last time I checked they also play for United and it's also an assumption that if they play we will lose points.

Anyway, I start to feel this is simply a waste of time tbh. We better stop here.

I did watch it and it's exactly why I said there's still hope despite that hope is quite small. That was a big improvement on his precious performances but tbh that's an average one at best. Especially considering it's a pretty nothing match at the end of the season.

Still, what we're discussing here is should Ole start him instead of Matic and Pogba atm. Or Fred and McT when both fit.

If your main argument is "he hasn't shown anything" and you're saying that as well, VDB can never get a win. He mostly plays (relative) meaningless minutes.

Pretty sure he was talking about last week against Wolves. They overran us. That was with Pogba in midfield. The week before Saints overran us with Matic on the pitch. Surely time for something different don’t you think.

Your argument makes no sense. I didn’t say everyone needs to play. And None of those players are first years at the club. There is clearly a difference between DVB and those players. Even the likes of Pereira has gotten more chances to start or play for United and we knew he was shit long time ago just yet persisted with him and still are (we haven’t sold him) just cause he is an academy player.

Also West Ham game last season? Then what about Fred this season? He has been so shit in the past 2 games but we don’t have a choice but to play him. Also I’m not saying DVB needs to play instead of Fred cause he isn’t a DM but you give a guy who is such a liability, every game he plays, chances yet no chances for another player cause of West Ham last year? How was Fred first year in the team with his limited chances? Did he set the world on fire with his performances every chance he got? Was he “deserving” of chances?

Yeah you're right. I didn't read it carefully.

Agreed that would need something new. He tried Matic Fred it didn't work, then Pogba Fred. Guess it might be VDB Fred next time. It's a home match so if that's case it'll be easier for him I think. Let's see if Ole would fancy to give him a chance, and if so could he grab it. We'll see.

People are kidding themselves if they think Ole will start VdB at CM in a Premier League match. It will be any two of Matic, Pogba and Fred.

This guy and Sancho in a way, are pass and move players. You could see Sancho passing to somebody in the previous game and making a run and not receiving the ball from the player, making him frustrated.

Ole deserves praise for reshaping the squad, but I guess you can’t have a hit rate of 100%. Even Liverpool under Klopp have brought papers like Minamino and Keira, among others.

Hope we sell him soon and not dither too much.
Well he better get Sancho performing. Imagine signing one of the best young footballers on the planet and him being unable to program because your style/system is that unsuitable for players who like to link up and play intricate football.

Ronaldo and Haaland at one club would be unlikely. Both goal getters who will want to be the main man upfront. Imo we have given up on Haaland upon signing Ronaldo.

I’m not so sure. I am not saying we will win the battle for him but we will be in for him. Mata, Lingard and Cavani are gone at season end which leaves Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho as wingers. If Ronaldo were to be shifted to the left then that’s 4 wingers. Amad will go on loan again. Depending on what we do with Martial there is a place for both Ronaldo and Haaland.

Ronaldo on the left and Haaland on the right? Again, you can play any formation you want but both will want to be in the middle boosting their goal record. Such a team will have no balance at all. It's effectively a two striker system whichever way you put the formations down on paper.

If Haaland is smart he'll go to a team that really needs a true goalscorer - like City, Madrid or PsG, not one that already has one but doesn't want to miss out on him (United, Chelsea or Bayern). Imo we won't be making a big CF signing for two years (Ronaldo's contract) unless he faces injuries or declines significantly.

No Ronaldo on the left, Haaland up top and another winger on the right. Ronaldo is a short term solution. Everyone knows it. Haaland is the future. I am sure it will enticing for him to play with Ronaldo for a year or two and then take over that mantle and be the main man.

Apologies, I meant Haaland in the middle. I don't think it's as enticing as made out for Haaland (or Ronaldo) to have to play second fiddle for a year or two. Being the main goalscorer with everything built around you at other clubs that are just as big, is more enticing IMO. See Mbappe wanting to leave PSG despite Messi's arrival. This one makes even less sense to me due to both players being out and out goalscorers. But let's see, every individual is different. If the player genuinely wants United only, and is willing to bide his time to get his perfect role here, it could happen (unlikely as per me).

I don't know why we're all discussion Haaland and Ronaldo in the VDB thread.

I think we've created a difficult situation for us wrt VdB it he doesn't feature much in the first half of the season. The more time that he spends being irrelevant the more the demand for him will be completely eradicated. Hopefully he starts proving himself but definitely worried of him just eating up squad space at being becoming a tough one to offload.

What I do not get is why we have not sold him this summer. It is obvious that this type of player does not fit the style Ole wants to play (or has to play because of tactical limitations). Ole is looking for different attributes and while I personally would prefer it to be otherwise this would be fine and the manager's choice.

But why keep a player by blocking a move and make false promises? This only creates dissatisfaction and might stir up trouble. The agent has already started to get their agenda across the media and this surely will not get better if Donny won't get game time.

Given that it doesn’t appear anyone enquired about him until deadline day then I’d wager not.

If I remember correctly, the team that arsene wenger built, the great one, one of those players took over a year to settle but when he did it was like a totally different player.
vdb hasn’t had enough chance yet to show us what he can do.
People complaining about Fred/McT but reluctant to put VdB in there because they have some notion that he must play AM. Why?

Care to explain why he splashed 40 million on him instead of investing in a proper DM then?
There's a lot of variables that go into this, I'd say. My own personal is that it was a summer where we'd signed nobody of significance (I think just Pellistri by that point) and discontent amongst the fans was steadily rising. Van de Beek was all but primed for a Madrid move which seemed to break down; Ajax had already promised he could go with a set fee in mind; and we have a very good working relationship with Ajax. All of the above made a very easy deal.

Whether he was an “Ole player” or not, eh. I’m sure he was on the list and I doubt Ole was going to say ‘nah, not him’ when it looked very possible to do the deal. Managers often end up with players further down their lists (for better or worse, Klopp initially wanted Brandt, not Salah), and with how our summer was going; it was probably van de Beek or nobody.

The other club mentioned in that article was Everton:

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport, Van De Beek’s agent Guido Albers said: “Cristiano arrived on Friday which we knew was bad news for us.
“(Paul) Pogba plays on the left, and with Cristiano’s arrival it means another extra player in midfield with Pogba moving away from the left.”

Albers also confirmed talks were held with senior figures at Everton, only for United to block a move away from Old Trafford on the night before deadline day.

He added: “We had conversations with Solskjaer and the board. We took the initiative to find a club and our search ended up at Everton. We opened talks with Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri.
“On Monday night (prior to deadline day) we received a call from Solskjaer and the club who told us that a transfer was out of the question and that he had to report himself to training the next morning.”
