Any player can be a miss, no matter the name or age.
One thing I can't wait for is seeing his runs into the box. The last time we had that was when RVP won us the title.
Don't get me wrong, I like Cavani, but a 36 year old Ronaldo is still a level or two above.
I don't think he'll be a miss, but I also don't think he'll score 35.
I have to confess at being underwhelmed at the news of signing Edi Cav. Thought it would be another last big pay day, couple of useful /spectacular goals and a number of injuries. My excuse is I'd never really watched him. Tough cookie and great discipline. Can tell he fights for the badge, to me at least. If CR7 rabonas a cross for him to tap in I'll probably be in hospital. Could do I think with a real protector to ward off some 'attention' the forwards will inevitably get and warn CR7 about Everton goalie Harald Schumacher. If only we'd cloned Keano. Could provide superb passes as ammo as well. Maybe the PL's top 3 midfielder's, if flawed. CR7 probably does as much research tailored to his own needs as a coach anyway and has played either with or against a good few new team members. Maybe SAF and OGS will have occasional informal dialogue comparing views. Put it this way, I'd prefer him in our system than Klopp's who I think is extremely physically demanding, too much so. We've got a squad not a team so step up and step out.

What constitutes as Ronaldo being a miss ? Not winning the league ? Not winning a trophy ? Not scoring more than 25 goals this season ? On the flip side what constitutes as Ronaldo being a hit ? You can’t please all the people all the time so why don’t we just see how the season plays out the decide on Ronaldo as a signing has been.

Even if Ronaldo score 40 goals and win us PL, there will be people saying he is a miss as he doesn't win us CL. Even if he does win us CL, there will still be people saying he is a miss as he doesn't press enough and offers nothing apart from scoring goals etc.

Or that it was all because of Bruno's or Shaw's service.

Someone on here said Portugal were dominated by Belgium because Ronaldo was the focal point

My feeling is that if Ronaldo didn't score a hattrick, people will think he is having a bad game.

These are the 10 last Juve seasons and the GF and GA each season. Bolded are the Ronaldo years.

2013-14 80-23 +57

Juve had their 3 worst seasons of GD with Ronaldo in the team and the GF didn't really improve either. The 3 seasons before Ronaldo joined the team Dybala scored a combined 52 goals in Serie A, the 3 seasons Ronaldo was there Dybala scored 20 goals- and Ronaldo is 3 years older than when he joined Juve. Ofcourse none of this mean that he will be a 'huge miss', but I understand if some people are a bit on the fence on the signing.

No chance Ronaldo will be a miss.
Regardless of his performance on the pitch, he’ll have huge impact (inspiration) on other players and I think will be more attractive for other players because of him, example Haaland. He also increase Uniteds marked value, but that’s off course if secondary importance.

Appreciate the stats.
What stands out is the defense got significantly worse as well. They were just a slightly worse team overall. Plus if I'm not mistaken the goals for average over his three years is quite similar to that of the previous 7 years.( 74 something vs 75 something)

Remember a bunch of village idiots telling everyone that Cavani would be a flop last season too. That turned out well.

I don’t follow Juve but is Ronaldo the reason for this? Is he the only factor or the main factor in this? For example when he signed for us the first time around we went from winning the league 4 seasons out of five, winning the treble etc to not winning the league for the next three seasons and only winning one fa cup. Clearly he had a huge negative impact on us the first time we signed him. How else could it be explained that you go from winning 4/5 titles and the treble to only winning a single fa cup in three years. He’s a poor player. Always has been.

The year Ronaldo joined Allegri was their manager just as the previous 4 years, and they bought Cancelo and Bonucci while selling Buffon and Higuain. On paper it looks like the team maybe should have gotten stronger or at least stayed the same. I'm not saying that Ronaldo=Huge hit or Ronaldo=Huge miss, but it doesn't feel like there is much middle ground here at the moment. If Ronaldo scores a ton of goals but the team suffers is he a hit? I think he will give some great moments and I can't wait for them and I hope that the players around him still find ways to play at their best.

The thing is, teams will be setting up to stop Ronaldo and while that is happening, Bruno, Greenwood, Sancho, Rashford and Pogba will get more space. This can only improve the share of goals in the team.

What you basing that on? Us winning nothing? We haven’t since the EL under Jose. Lack of cohesion? Did you watch the last two games. Football is a team sport enhanced by better players. We’ve already blamed Pogba for everything….let’s start on Ronaldo before he’s kicked a ball and blame all of Juves issues on him. It’s as ridiculous as claiming United going downhill when he first joined was his fault.

That movement?!

And that’s a Premier League player he’s losing. Not all of Irelands team are Championship fodder as suggested

this guy used to be a tricky winger. I don't think people realize how much that speaks to how good he is the way he adapted his game and reinvented himself to become the game's leading goalscorer. what a fecking player. never seen anything like it

But he's a forward not a defender, I don't get this. This has coencided with the signing of De Ligt has it not?

The goals scored column has remained consistent with Ronaldo there.

I'm not sure what his point is, it's pretty obvious he's already past his prime and no one expects him to be the same player when he left the Premier League but he's still the best player in his generation, along Messi, and he's good enough to lead the attack for Manchester United. I'm sure he's already having an impact and it's a very different situation how he arrives the league now.

1. His wages will stretch the frontier which agents will be able to explore when dealing with us over contract extensions in the future (we have seen this in the past already with Sanchez, Pogba, DDG). See Barca.

2. Non-existent defensive contributions will impact our shape and will put an immense pressure on our midfielders. Everyone could see the difference between Cavani and Martial last season and how it impacts our ability to press effectively from the front.

3. He can’t play with his back at all and do the hold-up as he only operates well in spaces since he’s not your classic #9.

4. In case he’ll be performing poorly Ole will shy away to change him due to his status and ego in order not to upset him, which will hinder our team.

I personally feel he’ll end up being a costly mistake for us (taking away the balance that Cavani brings) and Ole (will ultimately lose the job as a result) when you don’t look through the euphoria lenses. I may be underestimating Ronaldo greatly here but this is my feeling with respect to this transfer, having watched him play these last few seasons where he struggled to influence the games when he’s not scoring penalties or poaching goals are not on.

Can we do a poll on this?
Whats his wages. I pretty sure I read hes taking a pay cut to be within the wage structure

Apparently around 500k a week. Which is fine with me. If anyone asks to match it, tell them to have a career like Ronaldo's before asking for 500k a week.

Ronaldo has a status as a footballing God pretty much, especially back at United now and I have 0 doubt that every single player at the club will feel ecstatic that they have the chance to play with him for a few years. Him and Messi are pretty much the only 2 who could go anywhere and have the same instant respect from everyone.

Let me fix it:

"I think Cristiano Ronaldo - of 36 fecking years of age - you know, the same age I retired in Burger King Land after two years without any trophies or impressive feats accomplished to my name - will not make the same impact to the Premier league as he did in the past. I think he wanted to move away from Juventus to get the media headlines back to him - as opposed to me, who dread the media attention so gravely. By the way, buy my books: Gerrard: My Autobiography (2006), Steven Gerrard - My Captains Book (2009), Steven Gerrard: My Story (2015), and Steven Gerrard: My Liverpool Story (2015).

Agree.
I was posting a lot of similar stuff about Ronaldo when he was on the verge of signing for City.
not being funny but if an agent walked in and said cristiano ronaldo is on 600k a week so my client wants 450k a week you’d laugh them straight out of the door.

he transcends a wage structure.

If he's on 385k then one good thing is I dont see Pogba getting more than that on a contract renewal.

He is the best player in the league. Yes at 36 years of age and it is not particularly close, he is still a drastically more athletic human being than Harry Kane or Kevin De Bruyne whilst having more football talent and a better mentality.

Again, I don't hate it - I'm just of the (clearly tiny minority) opinion that 2021/22 Ronaldo isn't the elite player he used to be. Hopefully I'm wrong, and either way it'll be great to see him back at Old Trafford in a Utd shirt
Do you mean he isn't the best player in Europe by an absolute mile as he was in 2008?

If so absolutely, if you mean he is not one of the best attackers in Europe and clearly the best player at our club then I reckon you are in for a very pleasant surprise this season.

Here are my worries:

1. When not including PKs, Ronaldo may not score more than 10 goals in a much tougher and rougher league.
2. He might cause locker room trouble because of playing time and wages.
3. We might have him for 3 (or 4) years paying top wages and be afraid to move on from him. Much like Rooney's last 4 or 5 years.
4. Cavani's minutes will be reduced too much and I think Cavani is the better striker in terms of goals and team play.
5. He is too old to win anymore trophies and the last year is proof with Juve and Portugal.

The only thing Ole could do, I think, is rotate Ronaldo and Cavani in the striker role every match. One match Ronaldo starts and Cavani subs in, second match, Cavani starts and Ronaldo subs in, etc... This way they both keep sharp. The 3 sub rule in the EPL, however, makes this untenable. In addition, Ronaldo will be really upset when he does not play an important CL match.

I think we were expertly played by Ronaldo's agent and City. We were not interested in him until it looked like he might be going to City and the United brass decided they could not let that happen. Now we have an old, aging star who could fade really quickly.

However, I am looking forward to his first introduction at Old Trafford. What a spectacle it will be.

Cavani better in term of goals and teamplay ??? For real ??
You're aware Ronaldo is a faster, stronger, more prolific, more creative, more accuracy in passing and crossing, less injury-prone version of Cavani, right ??
You're all hyping your "tough" league way too much. Even Ibrahimovic scored for fun here. We're talking about CR7. Anything Zlatan and Edison can do, Cristiano can do better.

I’m warming to the idea. I think he’s going to smash it this season. 25 goals in all comps. Hopefully the other lads take advantage in the space that Ronaldo will surely make for them. If teams come out to play us Ronaldo will finish moves off confidently. If they pack the box we will cross them to death. He also guarantees if someone like Martial or Rasford is having low output and a low energy game they aren’t guaranteed to start the next one. That should raise standards across the board. The team is harder to get into. That can only be a plus. Bring it on.

Ronaldo had 29 goals (6 PKs) in 33 matches in Serie A, do you really think he'll do anything close to that in the EPL? At 36 and Cavani at 34, Ronaldo is faster than Cavani, but I doubt he is stronger. We'll see about the rest.

More "EPL" Kool-Aid here of the type I was just ranting about in the Lingard topic.

Echoing an earlier post: anyone that seriously thinks Ronaldo is going to struggle to score more than 10 goals from open play in the big bad Premier League this season is in for a very pleasant surprise.
