France dont have a very good system and dont perform at a level where i'd be desperate to copy them.
They've shoehorned their best players into a team with a few workhorses like Giroud and Matuidi to make it work. And it worked pretty well mostly but it was fairly scrappy, fairly stop start and was often carried by individual moments of brilliance (and the teams they play being pretty run of the mill).
The standard we need to meet to compete with City or Chelsea or hell even Liverpool is higher than that French team could manage in my view. They have an embarrassing amount of talent available but it just doesn't come off when i've watched them. Maybe they were incredible against Ukraine but i'm not sure how much it even matters with the standard you'd expect of Ukraine.
What’s this got to do with Pogba?

This year anyway, Pogba performed better with United than France.

That's why we were so miserable in that final, because Pogba and Bruno didn't show up and the likes of McTominay and Fred don't change games. McTominay was a 6 in that game, wasted a chance and didn't create anything. His surging runs resulted in absolutely nothing and Pogba was wasted playing deeper to accommodate McTominay's forays forward in the number 8 role
Always amazing that It's Fred and Scott's fault. I thought their role is to put his in a position to not lose, yet the Pogs and Bruno's are to win? It seems Pogs is still dining out on the game against City with the odd cameo.......

Exactly….Football is a team sport, very few make a difference individually and even less of those that do, do so from deep in the pitch. Only now are we starting to have built a good team. He joined a woeful team when you look back on it. Has been played most often in positions that don’t give him the platform to truly excel and within that with partners whose strengths and weaknesses don’t compliment each other. When he has been given a platform that is more suited to his strengths he’s been superb.

When you say ‘even Scott’….can you explain that further? Have you said that in the thread of every player? I think ‘Scott’ was considered our best player on the night once he grew into the game. So then you’d be writing that comment in every players thread.

I’d invite you to watch that game again and see who else outperformed Pogba. I’d say Cavani and then very few others. Pogba was once again, for that game, moved from a position he was performing superbly in, to a position and a role that limits his impact. Then people blame him for not being the difference…from a double pivot. He actually played a disciplined game. Kept us in control of midfield by keeping it simple not taking risks on the ball when deep and giving a platform to the likes of Bruno and Rashford…who totally shit the bed….Even Paul outperformed them. He wasn’t great and he tired at the end of the game but he did his job, the job he’d have been asked to do. He wasn’t the problem and wasn’t asked to be the difference in that game, so yes again let’s blame him for that in a game we dominated possession but not the forwards who were totally shite.
I'm a Pogs fan but the lad gets a free pass far too often on here. He gets praised for the things that he should be doing. It's not all his fault but his ceiling is higher so I expect more.

You must be new to this forum. On the whole, you would think he was a Leeds United or Liverpool player based on a lot of what you read on the caf.

Pogba has carried United multiple times during his stay here. There are plenty of graphs that had him leading all our attacking stats over a substantial period despite being a CM. Mourinho wasn't sacked earlier because Pogba carried us to positive results. Ole's record breaking run that got him appointed full time, Pogba was our best player and there were shouts in the media of him being the best player in the league at the time. He's done it multiple times, but for some reason people develop amnesia when it comes to Pogba. these posts are pretty much how I feel about the whole thing:

He is a good player, he should be but the best players do it when it matters. I like Pogs a lot, but in the big moment, he's not delivered enough like a Keane, Scholes, Lampard or Gerrard.

Pogba gets a free pass? I haven't seen that in years. Dude gets killed on here when we lose.

This is how I see it. Pogba is clearly technique wise the supreme midfielder. However in my mind a player needs more at the top level. Or for consistent performances in my opinion. If he could improve tactically, ie with positioning and maybe decision making I think he would he show his true level more.

He's delivered in bigger moments than any of those players, if by delivering you mean scoring a goal

What’s this got to do with Pogba?
Pogba plays for France ...
How he performs for France and how they use him and set up around him is often used as a comparison with how we do. I think the comparison is redundant because they don't have a great answer to the problem

This year anyway, Pogba performed better with United than France.
This basically.
Weve made better use of Pogba and are a better team

Bizarre logic. If any of our players play for their international team and have a worldie I’m buzzing. If they play poorly I don’t care it doesn’t affect us. If one of our player wins the World Cup or is the stand out player of the tournament well it’s just weird for a United fan to say they don’t care.

Once it comes to internationals my loyalty is pretty fluid. We have players from all over. Unless their team is playing great football and being really entertaining i dont care much (probably in the same way you dont care if it doesn't go so well?). I just dont.
Its not really the point i was trying to make though. As far as getting the best out of pogba i dont think france have any answers for us.

France won the World Cup with Pogba being one of the star performers

And got knocked out of the euros by switzerland a couple months ago.

Its not about pogba, its about the team.

Was he the only France player to play all three games?

Mixed bag tonight. Some brilliant stuff, some wasteful loss of possession. Thought it looked like a penalty when he touched Pukki but guess the VAR room checked it and cleared it.

It did look a penalty, maybe they deemed it not enough contact to justify Pukki going down.

Was he playing in two man midfield there?

The heat map says he was the deepest midfielder if I am not mistaken?

Yeah he was deeper than Rabiot most of the match. Not the typical France setup, but he did really well. Finland weren’t exactly brave in their pressing though.

They played with wingbacks. France never just stick him in a two leaving the team disjointed and vulnerable.

And, we need to take advantage of it.
Fair point. Not one I’m terribly optimistic about whether Pogba is playing deep or not though. There might be a solution sat on the bench, but at this point I reckon we’ll never know.

I think the fanfare around Ronaldo will do this lad's performances a world of good. From 2 to 4 active Pogba threads on the Caf first page to none, that takes some doing. I have a feeling they're going to combine to devastating effect offensively. Add in Bruno, Mason, Sancho, Rashford, Edinson and oh my word!
