Without trying to put a damper on this glorious thread, i hope all the rape shennanigans doesnt drive him out of the club.
What i mean is all rival fans seem to be referring him as 'rapist' now (on rival forums). He's going to get rapist shit thrown at him at every away ground. And its only a matter of time before the media start doing it too.
I know he's super strong mentally, but its bound to grate on him after a time.
You lot used to do the same to Van Persie and then he went and joined you. Can’t see it being something that effects Ronaldo.

It doesn't matter this is his biggest test yet in his career imo. He will be nervous be he won't be crippled by it. I think players like him probably feed off of it and add live for this moment
Do you think this will make or break his career..?

He’ll just start off where ge left off….BOOM

Any chance Maguire offers Ronaldo the club captaincy as a mark of respect? I think everyone will see Ronny as the true leader and captain of this team anyway even without physically having the captains armband (our best player and our most senior/experienced in terms of trophies/caps). But I think from a marketing/commercial and PR perspective, it'll be like the Golden Goose for the club/Glazeiers and make even more $$$$$ having Ronny be captain for both club and country. The fans love him and he would be like the bridge between the fans and players/club

not to mention players like Rashford, Lingaard, Greenwood etc all look upto Ronny and admire him as most was kids in the Academy when Ronny was here last time. Plus he played with Ole so will be Ole's "right hand man" on the field.. It'll be a great story :keano:

Also didn't Maguire become club captain straight away when he joined? Imagine all the scenes of the players and staff trying to get selfies with him in training on Wednesday? he will be mobbed it'll be manic won't be much training! Also Manchester United now has a woman's team which they didn't have when Ronny was here before.. and most of them are big Ronaldo fangirls following him on social media even before he joined United:lol:
Why? He wasn't or leader when he was last here and wasn't Ramos the captain at Madrid?

Not that I think Maguire will or should give the captaincy, but Ronaldo will undoubtedly be seen as the/a leader, not only due to his seniority in age, but the respect he commands due to his achievements and stature in the game. Ronaldo now is light years ahead of the Ronaldo that was here last time around in terms of experience. He’s the captain for his national team etc.

Meh, being an all time great doesn't automatically make you a leader. Giggs was one of our greatest and hugely respected but not really a leader. Messi may garner respect at PSG but he's hardly an automatic captain. None of these players are true leaders of men like Keane, Terry and co anyway.

He captained ManUtd few times, also we had lot of leaders in that team and he was one of the younger player at that time. Now it's a completely different scenario.

Not that he will get armband but he will be the leader of the team.

Giggs was a leader, many players mentioned that Giggs, Scholes were the leaders in the dressing room and they were like next managers among the squad.

I mean, sure, if we want to use the term loosely, we had a lot of influential personalities in the dressing room. But nobody would compare Scholes to Keane as a leader, for obvious reasons.

Yeah I agree with that but there is more to leadership than just what happens on the pitch. Players like Keane, Giggs, Scholes all used to set the standards on the training pitch too and anything below, players used to get lot of shit.

Ultimately you should prove on the pitch with high standards. This is what Giggs said back in 2011.

"Paul Scholes and myself are the leaders. We are respected," the veteran Welsh midfielder told the News of the World. "Scholesy doesn't have to say much, he's the silent leader. "In a different way, there are the talkers - Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic. They take care of the atmosphere. "You can be a foreigner and quickly become a leader but you must prove your worth on the pitch and you have to remember that football is a team game. You have a job to do, otherwise everything falls apart. "In January, when Blackpool were beating us 2-0, it didn't need the manager to say anything. We just said, 'Come on, we've already been behind 2-0, against Villa, and came back'. That was enough to get us back in it."
From this team, which player do you think is as influential as Ronaldo? During his first stint at the club, club was full of players who won more than him and he was a young player. Now he is the senior most player and a bigger legend than any current ManUtd player. He is also performing at better level than any ManUtd player.

I don't think we have any proper leader of men figure at the club. But Maguire, Bruno, Ronaldo and hopefully soon, Rashford would all be important figures in the dressing. I just don't think we need to correlate ability with leadership or captaincy. Rooney was once our talisman and record goalscorer. Scholes once completely ran matches for us. Messi is the talisman wherever he goes. Neymar is usually the most important player at his club. Romanticism aside, it doesn't make them all automatic captains (even though they be so in certain cases).

Yeah but we have seen Ronaldo is the leader of his national team, player looks up to him and he is influential on and off the pitch.

As per you what is leadership?

For me it's simple, players who head the dressing room, influential on and off the pitch, leads by example with the performance on the pitch. Ronaldo ticks everything.

He won't get the armband but he will be the leader of this team.

That's what I'm saying. Being a great player doesn't mean you get automatically handed the captaincy otherwise Bruno who is our best player would already be captain and DDG would have been for a 4/5 year spell before. I think captaincy is overrated anyway but I have no basis for transferring it from Maguire to Ronaldo. If Scholes came out of retirement aged 36 tomorow I wouldn't instantly hand it over to him either.

Besides what are we doing? Taking it away from Maguire for two years and then saying "Ronaldo's 38 now you're our captain again, enjoy!"?

Apart from that one Ronaldo fan I don't think anyone is saying we should make him a captain. It's about leadership, with or without armband he will be the leader.

That's who I was replying to I believe. And he will be a leader among a few IMO.

Ronaldo doesn't need the captain's armband. He will be like Zlatan, demanding more of his team mates and setting a high bar for everyone on the pitch and in the training ground. Hopefully it will have a Bruno-like effect on the team - make everyone aware what one has to do to be a Manchester United player.

Exactly. And really hope the latter happens, not just with Ronaldo but with Varane and Sancho too in due course. If those three have a huge impact it would us up well for the next few years.

Hugo Lloris and Lionel Messi captained France and Argentina to a WC and Copa respectively. What are you talking about? I certainly wouldn't be in a rush to give them captaincy just for the sake of it. If you're fanboying let me know so we can discontinue this.

No doubt Ronaldo is a leader but I don't see a reason to take the armband off Maguire . Thought he grew into his captain's role here nicely

Your whole argument is arbitrary. Like, pure projections of what you consider to be leadership, and perhaps masculine traits. Ronaldo is a leader. He has led his teams to success. So has Messi, yes. What separates Keane or Terry from Ronaldo and Messi? Running around frowning like they’ve just tasted spoilt milk?

My reply to you started with “not that I think Maguire will or should give the captaincy”, your remark about not being in a rush to give them the captaincy makes no sense then/adds no value. Again, what are you rambling about?

Just be glad we have another leader in the first team ffs

thats now Maguire, Bruno and Ronaldo. plus McTominay who has potential...

In 2019 before we bought Maguire we had a team full of fannies. Completely rudderless.

There's nothing arbitrary but if you see "masculinity" as the only difference between Terry and Keane vs Messi and Ronaldo, as far as leadership goes, then you are beyond help on this topic. There are leaders and then there are leaders. A team doesn't need a Keane/Terry type figure to be successful but it's evident that they were comfortably more influential leader of men than the two best players of this generation.

Exactly ... Not sure why he has to be the leader. He's another leader, and likely to be a very influential one at that.

Still rambling, but you’re yet to post what separates Keane or Terry from Ronaldo and Messi? And please answer the question, none of these “there are leaders and then there are leaders/leaders of men” non-answers that pop up as headers for £4.99 webinars on leadership

After reading this, It's tempting to Photoshop Ronaldo as Tom Cruise's character in Magnolia.
