He's looked off the pace since the Euro final. He probably needs a rest, hopefully we'll have Telles back soon.

I’m not sure rest is what Master Luke needs. He’ll crank through the gears as he plays more games. Then hopefully some rest before the December crush of fixtures, with Telles hopefully getting a few matches in December.

But while we’re on the subject of the left back position, after his first two matches Telles never really looked as sharp as most us expected.

How did he play? I only saw the 3 min highlights.

Got beaten at the back post, which is surprising because imo he usually reads the danger really well. That whole sequence seemed poor from all the defenders ball watching and not being on their toes.

Highlight I watched showed Shaw having to cover 2 players, the player that scored and the one right behind him. He was in a bind had the ball gone over to player behind him or the scorer but, still got a body to him. Golden boy Grealish was just standing around the top watching the cross come in.

Yeah I wouldn't say he did 'poorly' but in hindsight, I thought he could have done better as he was caught on his heels a bit. The immediate threat is always a runner towards the goal rather than behind. I am being harsh of course.

Reading comments, some are saying England were tired and made zero subs to Poland's five?!

Southgate gonna Southgate.

He’s probably like Rooney (similar physique too). Needs to play lots of games to get fully fit. Rest is counter-productive.
I can agree with that, that's how I see it too. Although he needs one game off sometimes because he is more injury-prone than Rooney. But right now he needs to play more.

Played well.

2nd half especially ran the flank with Grealish and Mount, combined beautifully at times. There was a period in the 2nd half where they passed them dizzy with great rotations.

The goal wasn't his fault at all. He has a man behind him (his direct opponent) and a midfielder attacks from deep. If anything Rice should be covering that man more but he's ball watching instead.

Realistically though it's mainly Walkers fault for getting beaten so easily in the first place.

I thought he looked good yesterday. One of England’s main threats in an otherwise stale performance. He will be getting there fitness wise now I suspect.,

Cheers for summary. Hopefully he can combine with Sancho/Ronaldo (?) this weekend.

If Shaw looks burnt out this weekend, this is who we're going to blame.

It's that cheeseburger fries meal he had at the meal dinner. At least he didn't order the steak well done

Felt like we didn't go to him much in the first half and instead went to AWB for some reason. Second half was a different story and it shows.

His development in the last few years has been staggering. He's a player that can both burst up the line like a traditional full back and also tuck in and become another playmaker. He's also probably our best player at carrying the ball on counters. He's technically good enough and has the physicality to do everything. Extremely impressive.

I felt that but I think that was the way Newcastle set up first half Every time it went to our left they were quick to block it out
On our right they were ok with awb crossing

There was a moment where he just barrelled someone off the ball with his big butt  fantastic, showed some of last seasons form today.

Back to his best today, dominant down the left, linked with Sancho and powered his way to the assist for Ronnie's 2nd.

Think we are seeing a real peak Like Shaw. He’s absolutely full of confidence, quality and self belief. He’s a beast too.

Getting better each game, which is great and we need it! I was wondering where the player from the Euros was, but I can see it coming back slowly but surely

Indeed, you could tell after his assist all his confidence came flooding back. I expect he'll be one of our biggest performers again this season, he's essentially a playmaker playing at full back.

Was MotM for me, just ahead of Pogba. Can't remember the last time I've trusted a player so much - both with and without the ball.

He's changed his socks?

Or at least how he wears them?
I noticed that too! When he was taking corners in the first half and the camera was on him, I saw his socks were lower and seemed to be tucked into his shin pads or double layered. Obviously hanging with Grealish too much

He is getting back to his best after a couple of shady games.

I like how he tucked in and started creating. Pep's dream FB.

Obertans #1 fan.
Can we get a chant for him after his stellar few years?
To the tune of “put your hands up for Detroit - I love this City”

“Give some custard to Luke Shaw - he hates Man City”

For the goal, Almiron managed to get away from him (Shaw) and Matic when he quickly turned around with the ball, Maguire tried lunged in but Almiron was faster and managed to avoid Maguire's tackle.

Mad to think the consensus this time last year was that he wasn't good enough going forward and was the weak link.

Was watching a post match thing with Tim Sherwood who commented that it was not the greatest of passes. Shaw had charged at pace down the field and maybe not inch perfect to where it met Ronaldo stride for stride, but, the pace and accuracy how the heck can that be not considered anything but, an excellent ball.

I very much doubt that. He was player of the year once and player's poty twice in the last 3 seasons. I don't believe there could have been a consensus that he is the weak link in recent times, especially while AWB is in the team.

That was probably 2 years ago, no?

This time last year, most of us on the cafe were convinced we would have beat Sevilla if we had Shaw. Towards the 2nd half of the 2019-2020 season, I thought it was obvious he was class.

This isn't much to do with his performances -

But I've noticed all our goals vs us this season lean towards something that happens on the left hand side more than the right hand side.
