Air Jordan brand with 'Jumpman' was one the biggest stroke of marketing genius from MJ and the nike team. 30 years on, it's still one of most sought after shoes in the world

Can the CR7 create an everlasting brand like MJ. 30 years on, will folks be wearing CR7 kicks? Speaking of which, wonder why Nike isn't positioning it more around Ronaldo's trademark Siiii stance?

No.

As much as I would love to see him make that happen, a lot of people don't really understand that Jordan and Nike made wearing sneakers cool, all during a time when social media wasn't a thing. The current Jordan kicks are amongst the most sought after out there right now. This has taken decades to cultivate that sort of following. There is literally an air of magic about Jordan, they made it cool to want to "be like Mike". That entire brand was very carefully cultivated, they haven't done that with CR7 (yet).

I don't know if the brand of Air Jordan can ever be matched honestly.

Ronaldo definitely matches him in mentality though. His sheer drive and desire to be the best is unmatched in football IMO. Maybe even eclipses Jordan in sheer drive. Jordan was retired for a 2nd time at Ronaldo's age. And I say that as a Bulls fan too.

Not for me. Jordan's shoes are not just basketball shoes but shoes you can wear for any occasions. The CR7 would need to produce something as appealing as that

Dont think so. Air Jorden is cool to wear for people who dont even know much about MJ the player.

I don't think they can be compared. Air Jordan brand benefits more from brand promotion/creation by Nike and has been in the business for 30+ years. Its more related to success of sneakers products itself, and its combination of coolness of Nike products, street fashion culture, and Michael Jordan as a GOAT player. Whereas CR7 is more related to popularity the player, but not necessarily anything to do with the products or culture itself.

For example I never watched basketball, but still find it cool to have a pair of Air Jordan sneakers back then. Its kind of a trendy thing.

Nike will never allow another brand off shoot like Air Jordan because it might threaten to eclipse the Nike branding. They literally paid hundreds of millions to MJ from his cut of shoes sales and permission to continue using the Air Jordan branding.

Everything revolves around Nike now and athletes will only be used to promote a certain shoe or shoe line. That way Nike's branding keeps growing while they pay much lesser to their star athletes in endorsement fees.

No. I don't even know the logo, is there one? If it was ever to be achieved it needed to happen a long time ago.

Simple answer is no chance in hell.

The whole points of Jordans is that he was wearing them during games and then the subsequent history behind that. Unless everyone is suddenly going to wear football boots to the shop I don’t think it’ll happen.

Not to mention the influences that basketball, fashion and music all have on each other. It’s not comparable.

No and you can’t really compare given the difference in footwear for both sports. You can’t exactly wear football boots casually.

When I was a kid there were the usual kids debate on how they made you jump higher and the sole build etc theories that kids loved to banter about. Also the limited edition aspect way before 'gameifying' products were a thing. They have mythical level nostalgia attached into the brand that grew with the customers from childhood/early adulthood. What you couldn't have or afford back then you can have today in abundance. Also as many have said, wearing basketball shoes/hitops (converse etc) casually was always a thing, he just cornered that market very effectively early on, on top of being a GOAT and lovable persona.

I agree to an extent. Although I remember having the same conversations about the Shox, which never took off without having the history behind them. The limited aspect is certainly behind what continues to drive it now, but that’s not exclusive to Jordans, it drives the whole sneaker market.

Jordan brand was so huge that they renamed a country after him. Don't think we will see any country with name Ronaldo.

Surely Jordan didn't start this brand at the end of his career?

I agree with other posters that nothing can quite match Jordan.

When you hear 'Jordans' now it makes you think of sneakers, not Michael Jordan himself - the brand has become more than the man.

Is that an American thing? When I hear “Jordans” I think plastic surgery

The limited aspect is very smart way to drive up demand and prices.

Now that memory serves, also there were the Reebok Pump & Inflators, as popularized by the gimmicky Shaq Attaq's of the 90's.

I think it is just a different culture, great footballers release football boots but they are not casual wear. In America even lesser known basketball players have shoes.

Ronaldo is already the most famous athlete in the world, social media clearly indicates that.

I think only Usain Bolt has the potential to come close to or eclipse Jordan but I have not come across any brand for Bolt (and I have not bothered to look anything up).

He didnt . Nike signed him up very Early in his Career. It was a massive moment for both Micheal Jordan and Nike. It comes up in the Last Dance which is a great watch if you haven't seen it.

Not even Close. Nike have had their Pin up stars over the years and CR7 isn't one of their biggest, actually not even close. Tiger and Lance were probably bigger marketing wise than Ronaldo . Air Jordan is nearly like its own brand running parallel to Nike.

No way. Jordan's are a part of pop culture. The brands are miles apart and I don't see that gap ever closing.

Agree with this. Just look at PSGs kit. Could CR7 ever be a kit manufacturer for a club as big as PSG? Doubt it.

Not for me. I couldn't tell you what the CR7 logo is despite being a huge football and United fan. I have known the Air Jordan logo all my life despite knowing nothing about basketball. It was on a whole different level to anything else and so was he, and the timing was perfect.
