Has anyone said that purely after the game?

We have a great little run of games to start us off but there’s a hard patch of Everton, Leicester, Pool, Spurs, City, Watford, Chelsea (in that order) on the horizon. Given we dropped too many points in those types of games last season, that’ll be where we will see where we’re at with all the new faces bedded in.
people here have been saying we'll win the title since Ronaldo signed...

Nah their goal was not our fault, it was because Almiron is a great buzzing player and dribbler who deserves better than newcastle, despite his face
Imo it's quite hard to say.

The Newcastle defender was simply trying to clear the ball after their throw in and somehow it ended with Almiron. It was a freaky pass. Imo our whole defense and midfield was caught off in this situation as no one expected the ball could get to him. However had Shaw or Matic keep a closer eye on Almiron this was probably stopped there. There's a bit lack of concentration here imo.

Agreed you gotta give credit to Almiron. I was really impressed with him yesterday. Guy is fecking rapid, a very good dribbler and always work his socks off.

I love the fact that the Newcastle keeper bent on time-wasting, gave us the extra two minutes for CR to re start his OT goal tally.
Thought Matic had a storming first half, Varane leaping like a salmon with clean headers that cleared the danger and of course CR... its fairy tale time once again at the Theatre of Dreams

Watch that game again, the anxiety people had is masking how good that first half was. we had 15 shots, producing attack after attack after attack. We were forcing quick turnovers and our ball recovery was top notch, due to our defenders contributing towards it. In the second half, our midfield got a little bit exposed, but not through long balls, simply intricate counters that most teams will struggle to produce.

I think we were very lucky the fixtures list had us facing Newcastle for Ronaldo's return. We looked disjointed and our defense was not very good. Our attack is awesome, but we have a big gap in midfield. Maguire had a bad game. Not been impressed with him lately. I think if he weren't English he would face harsher criticism.

Ole got most things right for this match. Now he must improve on the main thing which he has failed at so far since becoming the Man Utd manager: rotating the squad.

This is my preferred line-up for the next game against Young Boys in the CL:

Ronaldo Cavani
Fernandes
Pogba Fred Vdb
Shaw Maguire Varane Awb
Ddg

Finish off the game early, then put on:

– Martial for Ronaldo
– Sancho for Fernandes
– Mejbri for Pogba
– Dalot for Awb or Shaw
– Lindelof for Maguire

I would like to give minutes to Lingard, Elanga and Bailly as well, but maybe next game.

Nice summation! Although we are vulnerable to those quick counters, whether intricate or not.

I think we’ve just got to hope this is another RVP season. We’ve seen that we’re still vulnerable when players go at us.
To be fair, we faced two of the best ball carriers/dribblers in the league over the last two games, those two can cause anyone issues - not every team will have such players. Your point stands though, there's a lack of steel and industry in there when the full McFred isn't playing, and when they are though we have to sacrifice creativity

You are doing it the wrong way around. If you are ever going to rotate properly you have to rest players and keep some aces on the bench just in case.

Your approach means the top guys go onto the pitch without a game ahead but a "kill it off so we can sub you off" which is the wrong mindset. Then how/when do you determine the game is done? What message does it send to those not trusted to start and everyone on the pitch when you finally make subs "because the game is over". Can't see how that can ever end well.

Disagree, Luke Shaw lost the first challenge, and then instead of covering his own position (where the goal was conceded from), he just ineffectively (and needlessly) closed down near Bissaka.
Shaw has some blame yes. But Maguire doesn't go to ground where it was so easy to by pass him. Their attack dies a natural death. All he had to do was slow them down

I have the likes of Martial and Sancho on the bench, I consider them aces or at least the closest thing to it available in the squad after I picked the first eleven. Rashford is injured otherwise he'd be on the bench or in the starting eleven as well.

Why do you assume I would tell the players they'd be subbed once they kill the game off? Obviously the subs always depend on a lot of things including performance and fatigue. I would tell the players to go for it from the off.

The players in the starting eleven know they have to perform, otherwise Martial and Sancho etc are waiting to replace them. And if Martial and Sancho are put on they also know they have to perform, otherwise they won't climb up the pecking order for the next game. The squad is very big now and that automatically creates a lot of competition, so if anything I think that will have a positive effect on the mindset of the players. Any player with a wrong mindset and bad performances will soon find himself getting less and less minutes. But if having this big squad is going to work then all players have to accept the fact that rotation is needed at times.

I don't see your point.

Can't believe I've missed the Leeds and Newcastle games, but managed to watch Southampton and Wolves.

You say Ole's main failure is not rotating, then say what you would do against Young Boys is field:

Ronaldo Cavani
Fernandes
Pogba Fred Vdb
Shaw Maguire Varane Awb
Ddg

My point is if that's rotation then Ole has excelled at it.

Perhaps I was a bit unclear or confusing.

Going all the way back to his first few months in charge, Ole has not rotated enough. Remember the Liverpool game when we lost several players to injury in the space of something like 20 minutes? It's been the same pattern ever since, for instance last season he flogged Rashford, Maguire and Fernandes. I have maintained this criticism of his management in spite of consistently having been and still being Ole In.

And the starting eleven I suggested above is not intended to be heavy rotation IMO, nor should it be. It's still early in the season plus it's an important game so no need to rotate heavily. If you rotate slightly throughout the season the need for heavy rotation later is reduced.

Heavy rotation would mean something like I would suggest for the FAC and LC games:

Elanga Greenwood Sancho
Mejbri
Matic Vdb
Telles Bailly Lindelof Dalot
Ddg

3 subs: Mata, Lingard, Jones

...

However, I'm now reading reports that Cavani is out for tomorrow and if so I would change my team selection to this:

Ronaldo
Pogba Fernandes Sancho
Fred Vdb
Shaw Maguire Varane Awb
Ddg

Subs:

- Greenwood for Ronaldo
- Martial for Pogba
- Lingard for Fernandes
- Dalot for Awb or Shaw
- Lindelof for Maguire

Mejbri, Elanga and Bailly hopefully getting minutes in the next game.

Because he hasn't had the squad depth required to rotate. You seem to forget the season where we started Lingard and Perreria regularly out of necessity rather than choice. He has a deeper bench now, especially once Rashford gets back. So let's see how he manages it this season.

I don't forget that at all, because it's only part of the explanation. He had Vdb at his disposal all of last season. Are you trying to tell me there wasn't even 5-10 more games where he could have started Vdb and given Fernandes and Rashford a rest? What about 5-10 more starts for Tuanzebe and Bailly and rest Maguire and Lindelof? Amad and others didn't play much either.

Yeah I think Donny was a little overwhelmed last season and it showed in the appearances he made.

Bailly was likely being protected to help him get back to full fitness. Tuanzebe shot his bolt against PSG and didn't offer much the rest of the season. We only had Amad since January and he was much too slight for the Premier League.

Sure, but I'm talking about 5-10 matches. All those players were/are good enough to play more than they did. Ole flogged Maguire and Fernandes and played Rashford injured. It would help if more supporters dropped their obsession to win lesser trophies such as the EL though.

Almiron was fantastic on that goal. But if I were Maguire, England and Manchester United defender, I'd be disappointed with myself at that. What was he doing trying to slide in at such a high area? It's the kind of rash decisions that separate the good defenders from the great ones. That being said, he got better as the season went on last season, so hoping he does the same in this.
