Do some of our players lack the mentality to play for United? Or is the coaching staff just not good enough? Do the likes of Carrick and Mckenna need to be replaced?

I understand going down to 10 men and playing for 55 minutes a man down is hard but why did we struggle so much to even get possession and get the ball up the pitch let alone have a shot on goal?

Chelsea went away to Anfield and played a man down for an entire half and came away with a point? We couldn’t even do that to a Swiss team. So is it a player quality issue or is it Ole’s management or is it the mentality/mental toughness issue? I don’t think having Ronaldo alone is going to fix the issue. He can only do so much.

It’s more the tactics/decisions made by the manager than it is mentality. Our squad is elite our coaching is not.

I was team Ole until today. This was embarrassing. No composure, no plan, no heart and no brain.

Liverpool or City would have got at least a point tonight I'm sure.

No way they would have got this bullied by Young Boys even with 10 men

You can’t really account for what Lingard did though? Otherwise it would have been a decent point. They played the game of their lives.

We would have come away with a point if not for a shocking individual mistake?

Yes, but they would have had a competent midfield to see out the game. Without McTominay providing stability our midfield is like a fart in the breeze.

Same Liverpool who lost all their group away games the year they won it?

It’s the manager and the message he sent out when he tried to defend for 70 minutes against Young Boys, subbing off all of our attack.

Today wasn't a case of weak mentality

It was confused mentality, the moment we went down to 10 men and the subs started happening.

Starts with the manager.
This, all this game showed us is that he has no balls at all. What was the plan after we went down to 10 men. Take off Ronaldo for Jesse what was the idea behind that. Down to 10 you need a focal point Jesse isn´t that, not in a million years.

Our opponents always play the game of their lives if we lose, according to some of you lot. You dispatch these clowns. You would say the same for Newcastle if we dropped points. They were average as they come, but we were utter shit and pathetic.

Subbing Ronaldo for a midfielder should tell you who's grand plan it was.

Weak mentality had nothing to do with it. Our players fought really hard tonight to defend, it was clear the team was set out to defend a 1-0 lead in difficult circumstances. I agree that the team should have had more of a foothold in the game, but that is instruction and somewhat tactical, not mental.

We have one of the best squads in the world but we’re handicapped by having a very bad coach. Put Ole in charge of a midtable team & he takes them down.

That's very rational, making a complete u turn based on one loss due to a red card, a deflected cross, and an inexplicable error.

The decision making of the players in this group under pressure is embarrassing. You are just waiting for the mistake. Think of how many comedy goals we've conceded due to players making panicky mistakes e.g. Sheff Utd (H). It's deeply worrying. Does this group have the balls to fight for silverware? We are basically banking on Ronaldo to teach this squad how to win. If he manages it he deserves a statue.

Still these threads, trying to figure out the players. It doesn't matter what players we have, what players we might bring in, what players we had. It all comes down to one thing: the manager. When are people going to realize that?

Our mentality was being praised by the commentators until Lingard gave them a goal out of nothing in the last minute.

Stop being so outcome-orientated. We had a man sent off out of nothing and we absolutely gifted them a goal. Its nothing to do with mentality its individual errors

Kneejerk thread.

AWB, red card. JL, brain fart.

We were never going to run the table the entire season. Yes, we should be hammering clubs like Young Boys but it goes too far too argue “weak mentality”.

Mentality is a very easy and often very cheap thing to point to because doing so requires no real insight or analysis, so I'm slightly reluctant to blame the performance on such a nebulous factor.

One thing we know is that we're not a particularly well coached team. It's something you can actually see in what our players physically do on the pitch. And if you're down to 10 men, coaching flaws are only more likely to be exposed. So I would probably tend to lean more in that direction.

Both management as well as mentality.

Management: Each and every fecking sub decision in 2nd half was wrong. Want to have better control and do better aerially? Get Varane for Lindelof, not VdB. Less said about Lingard for Ronaldo the better. At least bring Greenwood on. Finally though Fred had a stinker, why get Martial for last 2 mins when we can't string 2 passes together?

Regarding mentality, I am resigned to fact that we are having too many players who don't have mentality to play for United and given how shit we are at getting rid of players, it is going to take us forever to replace them with better ones.

What a weird comment, coming from a season where we set a record for comebacks.

United have been basically a flaky group of players since Ferguson retired. Tonight proved the flakiness remains.

Combination of weak mentality and too many players on at the same time with a poor workrate when we go down a man. Can't have any passengers off the ball when defending like that. 5 at the back has never worked with these players, will never work and we need to stop fecking doing it.

Last time I remember us getting a red was in the 6-1 thumping vs Spurs. We seem to give up when the going gets tough.

Ronaldo will only be here a couple years, please just be proactive and change the manager asap. Everyone knows he is not good enough, and Zidane and Conte is there waiting in the background.
