I don’t buy the Ole is bad tactically. I think he gets it right sometimes and horribly wrong others. We’ve had some very impressive wins over PSG, Man City, Liverpool just to name a few.

Where he does seem to have a recurring problem is an excess of caution when we have a one goal lead. Regardless of being down to 10 men we gave up all control in that game by going so defensive. It’s very similar to when he brought on Tuanzebe against Everton and it cost us two points. Ole doesn’t seem to realise having an attacking threat is part of defending a lead.

We seem to have far too many late equalisers or in that case concede a winner compared to other top sides.

To be fair we would get the odd game like this under SAF even, Basel, Maccabai Haifa, cluj, it happens

They also scored another goal. And no I didn't ignore Lingard, but he played that pass after Ole moved him into central midfield due to, for some reason, subbing his entire midfield off. Lingard is not a central midfielder. I would hazard a guess that Fred or VDB would have been significantly less likely to pass the opposition through on goal, and I would also hazard a guess that Lingard would be less likely to if he was playing in attack, where he is supposed to play. Also I say hazard a guess, but its not really a guess, its more a common sense assumption.

If you mismanage your team they tend to become more likely to underperform or make mistakes. This is kind of why there is supposed to be a manager of the team in the first place.
I don't think Lingard's regular position has any bearing on what happened, it was a disastrous misjudged pass. It's the kind of pass you most often see from CBs, trying to go back to the keeper but getting the pace or direction of the ball wrong. Basic stuff that any footballer should not be doing, but occasionally shit happens

This shit again. When have we ever sat back and parked the bus against Basel or macabi Haifa? against Basel we had 70% possession and 14 shots. Dont make up stuff.

SAF comparisons again FFS.

We had 66% possession against Young Boys before the red card.

I didnt make anything up, I didnt mention anything about sitting back, or possession, I said we had results like that under SAF, we did, all of the ones I mentioned were losses against teams we should have beaten. Climb off your high horse, put your rattle away and have a rusk.

If you put yourself under pressure for an entire half, and have players in positions they aren't comfortable in, mistakes are more likely to happen. I don't really see the argument here. It's just common sense.

You wouldn't pick Lingard in central midfield for any normal game precisely because you wouldn't be able to trust him to not do something like he did last night. Just like you wouldn't play Pogba at centreback then claim "shit happens" if he loses the ball as the last man. It'd be on you for being dumb enough to ask him to play there.

A manager should know how to utilise his players properly, and if he doesn't and they underperform or make mistakes, its on him, because he's the fecking manager. If he manages and uses the players properly and they feck up or aren't putting the effort in, then you can argue its on them...although it's still ultimately the manager's job to sort it out. That's generally how football works at the top level.

I didn't have any problem with the effort of any of the players last night. I didn't even think they played particularly badly. The management however was horrid. THis is the theme with Ole. He's very good at getting players in the right place in terms of the effort and commitment, which all our other post Ferguson managers have failed at, but when it comes to in game management at times its almost like he's doing his best to sabotage it.

I explained why he went to a back 3 and why it was the right choice. If you’re going to counter, at least have the balls to say what you would have done that was different than Ole’s tactical change. You are saying take off Pogba or Fernandes and replace them with who? And what would be your tactics? How would you deal with constant 3v2s in midfield and only one striker?
Your explanation was that Ole wanted to deal with constant 3v2s in midfield by... removing a midfielder.

That's one way of doing it, I guess: turn those 3v2s into 3v1s!

I was not for Ole Out. But his post match presser changed that. He basically blamed the players, showed no sign of any insight into his own disastrous game management, substitutions, etc. No sign of learning. It’s as if it was still 1990. It’s the SAF fanclub. Nostalgia, sentiment, hard work, energy and vibes.

Do you honestly believe we will finish ahead of the likes of Tuchel, Klopp, Guardiola? I'm not saying he's a bad manager, you cannot be bad and finish 2nd in the PL. But he's not an elite manager and I struggle to see us winning anything with him in charge.
I literally watched us finish second ahead of Klopp and Tuchel last season.

How dare he blame some players in a game that we were dominating, until a stupid tackle, and then were going to draw(a good result away from home with 10 men), until a once in a blue moon shocker of a back pass.

Fair enough but what has Ole done for us Lately ... I am kidding The kneejerk reactions in here are something else. Sell Sancho and sack Ole . Donny is an Imposter & While we are at it sell Pogba bloody hell Relax dudes . Yes we have Weaknesses ,a DM is needed badly and RB as it happens but we are light years away from where we were a couple of seasons ago. True that was a bad result but fergie had them too. Get ourselves together and move on . Im pretty excited watching United these days and if I have to sit through the odd shit show ? Well so be it. Give the lads a chance to Gel and find their Groove. For me this is a very exciting team its going to take time .

1-1 would have been an acceptable result given how the game panned out. The performance was abysmal, but we can improve. We get one point to kick us off in the group, then go and win the next two games and we’re looking good.

To gift the game away like that in the 95th minute is just mind boggling. I still can’t get over that goal, he wouldn’t have placed it that well if he was up the other end of the pitch trying to play one of our forwards in. Why on Earth would he even attempt that pass, let alone get it so horribly wrong. It’s beyond all comprehension.

2 players cost Utd the points AWB and Lingard. Ole is responsible tactically for the lack of chances created after the red card. I still think Utd can qualify but I won't be suprised if they don't.
If we don't get out of the group it will be terrible. Yes we qualified for the CL, that is money, but getting out of the group is even more money.

The game against Wolves, and to a lesser extent Southampton (where again they got a lucky goal), give me greater concern than last night. United should be on top of those matches and deserve to win more often than not. We’ll see what we get against Villa.

Ole’s subs weren’t exactly inspiring last night and were perplexing at times. It is important to remember though that if the match started 10 v 11, Young Boys would be comfortable favourites to win. especially at home. I’m struggling to understand why people didn’t think we were up against it, once AWB was sent off. I guess it was more the manner of the loss that is most frustrating though.

I can’t see how anyone can defend this shit show, I’ve read comments about how SAF took heavy defeats and how Wenger lost 8-2. Pathetic! If you want to compare the defeats of great managers then compare there medals as managers too otherwise get out of here with your pathetic comparison!

I get the feeling that lot of posters have never heard the phrase "A bad day at the office". We had a poor match against spirited opponents due to the loss of a player to a red card. This kind of thing happens. Put it behind us and onto the next game.

If Ole never played for Utd, it would be very different. Simple as that. Ole might be the guy but me prepared for much more pain and fingers crossed, he gets there. I think he'll run out of time.

Maybe, if the game started 0-0. But if it started at 1-0 to us and we only had to last an hour?

Besides I think its not just the result, its the performance. If we'd been dull but comfortable second half but conceded a braindead late goal, that's infuriating but not the same kind of concern. But really it was one way traffic. Even with 10 men I would expect a bit of controlled possession in midfield, maybe the odd spell of pressure on their goal and a few attempts at counter attacks, but we saw nothing of that. In particular our inability to hold on to the ball for long enough to give the defence a chance to catch a breath was a real problem.

Won't be going anywhere if he snatches top 4 again
If he takes us out in the group stages again & wins nothing then surely it’s time to go? How long can we make excuses about “building” ? The rebuild is done, he has a world class squad. We should be competing on all fronts this season. If we go out in the groups again & finish 10+ points behind the champions again then it’s zero progress, despite significant investment.

Apart from Jesse misjudgement, are we that mediocre to react as team on loosing and recovering possession when under pressure? Almost all players in a single line across the pitch? Is this tik tak toe football?

The defensive line is not bad. Leaving one or two men much deeper would allow Young Boys to push more men up. Its something we've been caught out on before as AWB has a tendency not to be in line when we play the offside trap.

The issue here is Lingard's pass. He could have easily gone square to Varane. Or with more composure gone across the pitch to Pogba. Or, if he was scared, turned and hoofed the ball deep into the Young Boys half. Instead he chooses the worst option and executes it poorly, leaving DeGea for dead.

Would the SAF results be worse then? If you applied common sense here (I know, mind boggling request).

There was no red card in those games against Basel or Maccabi. Yet we lost 2-1 and 3-0 respectively.

VS

We played 60 mins of football on an astro turf pitch with a man down. They were absolutely buoyed and out for blood against us once the red happened.

Which is worse?

I'd suggest SAF results!

Bad day at the office? This was much worse. I have been at the game and it was really bad. I think we started okay, had a lot of posession.
But the second half was really bad. We started to waist time all the time, couldn't control the ball and weren't interessted in using the ball.
I think we will have to get used to that. Boring Ole-Football and waiting for magig stuff from our top players. Like Brunos pass yesterday. Apart from that we look clueless like our manager. Upgrade needed!

Unfortunately if you take the magic producing players off then magic doesn't happen.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the positioning of the players here.

We were playing 5 at the back (wing backs), all players are exactly where they should be. Dalot to Lingards left side, Varane and Harry to his right and Shaw further away at left full.

The simple and obvious pass is a 3-5 yard pass to Varane, who in turn plays it into Pogba.

You probably need to calm down a bit. No one is defending it, everyone is unanimous in saying it was poor - but you can also take a step back, realise that there were circumstances that led to it and that even being a man down for 2/3 of the game we didn't concede many chances and probably would have come away with a point without an awful last minute brainfart. It's ok, these kind of games happen.

We have almost 7 players in a single line and no one opening a passing lane, while everyone saying to Jesse to do the backpass. We needed only 4 in line at the back on this situation, and more in the middle of the pitch so the team could be able to react more agressively when loosing or recovering possession. These are clearly issues that must be addressed.

And the problem is we weren't looking much better with 11 vs 11 tbh

Lads, OGS is not the manager who's gonna win titles with MUFC, don't be nostalgic, players from the hall of fame don't win titles just because they invoke good memories among fans.

Two names for you:

- Paulo Fonseca, immediately available.

- Leonardo Jardim, available by the end of the season depending on how much Al Hilal asks for him.

Leonardo Jardim is one of the best managers in the world, that must be said, look at what he did with Monaco.
