Indeed. It’s just that we have seen the movie before, and it’s a bad movie. They say the definition of stupidity is to do the same things over and over and expect different results. Ole better get smart quick.
Maybe there's a bigger overall plan to maintain squad harmony by indulging Lingard or maybe Ole has changed his mind on him who knows. But I just don't see any future for him at United beyond this season and if I'm honest I don't think Jesse does either.

He did the back pass because he doesn't have the skill to turn and look forward. So it's not a "simple mistake". It's a terrible piece of play because he's just not very good.

Better players spin with the ball.

He's literally been doing this for seasons now. Passing it in the direction he's facing as soon as it gets to him. Yet people keep on defending him. He has not the talent or skill to take a touch, draw a player, use agility to turn direction quickly, wiggle, shimmy, create an angle for a pass.

He ALWAYS passes it quickly to which ever direction he's facing as he receives it. That's a bad bad player creating his own mishaps.

Wasn't a mistake. It was his level in its full and ugly glory. But yeh, Call it a simple mistake and let's carry on watching him do the exact same sequence, only further up the pitch where instead it hampers our ability to create shots on goal.

The whole “youth player” joke surrounding him has always been quite funny. But the underpinning aspect is that he still carries himself like a novice, not a seasoned professional. That’s why the joke still exists.

Fact is this guy should have left us seasons ago, he should most definitely still not be here, anyone with any sense surrounding the situation should have made sure he was sold this summer. But no, we still have to see Jesse pissing Lingard subbed on for Ronaldo, such an average player, not United level at all, proved it season upon season for us, yet STILL we persist, what is wrong with us, we do this with so many players.

I mean arguably in that position he makes the right choice, he just fluffs it and kicks the ball off his heal. He’s deep in his half possibly not aware what is behind him. DeGea is a free option who is viewing the whole field and can make a better choice and kick it up field .

Lingard fluffs it with his left and doesn’t hit the ball properly. Right choice poor execution.

You say better players spin with the ball but we’ve seen Carrick, Scholes, Pogba, Fred, McT, Bruno and Matic all get caught trying the same thing. The safe option is the ball back to DeGea especially in the 94th minute of extra time when a point is a decent result given the circumstances.

I've got a problem with the cowardly: "He's shit, but it's not about the mistake for me". When that's repeated dozens of times, it actually is about the mistake.

He's had a good run for West Ham and England. We've decided to keep him/he's decided to stay. He'll play when Ole says so and all in all he's looked quite decent for us.

I'm pissed about the brain fart, but if his presence bothers you, you really need to give your head a wobble. Everything points to him not being the same useless player that couldn't score a goal in a full year.

If he gets outclassed by the competition (Sancho and VDB) he becomes 3rd choice. I'm positive he's good enough for that. If he does better than those and becomes 2nd choice on merit in some positions, what's the problem? You know, except for your guttural hatred.

I wanted him sold, but I'll support him while he's here.

Wait, Jesse Fecking Lingard is giving conditions to Manchester United about playing time and the club are actually entertaining him to the extent of giving him minutes in our CL opening fixture? Well the rot has well and truly set in, its no wonder we don't have the collective mental strength to go over the line in Cup finals when we completely forget merit and accountability over a 'feel go factor' and the misguided notion of preserving value of nothing player like him, soon as he commits to a new contract forget about ever selling him.

It does not matter what everything points towards, what happens is what actually matters. Until know, we know he scored a goal in a dead game and made a mistake in a crucial game, nothing points to him being Man United standard, as the last 5-6 years already showed.
He had 2 good patches in a 7/8 year career, 4 months at West Ham and 5 months at United, that points to what?

It's still early in the season. We haven't seen that much. The freak blunder can happen to anyone and is completely unrelated to how good Jesse is or isn't.

People develop throughout their career, look at Memphis. Jesse's performed to a decent level these past few months where he can be a squad player for us.
If he does poorly, he won't play. We have competition.

To this, I can completely agree, I just didn't agree with the "things point to him being good for us" part, as the signs are still minor and it's too early to say that. If I would be Fred, I'd still punch him in the nuts for what he did.

Mistake, big deal, shit happens. We should never have been in that position nor should he have been put in it. Most of these comments are based on issues beyond yesterday's game.

He shouldn't have been put in a position where he decided he had to play a sloppy back pass into his own box on an astro turf pitch in the 95th minute of an away CL game we were drawing?

No one put him in that position but himself. He just fecked up spectacularly, shit happens people make mistakes. But it's on Jesse he's experienced enough to know better.

The annoying thing is these things do happen, but when they do it's the fault of the player who's committed the error, it can't be legislated for, except instead of accepting that and moving on it's turned into an entire reasoning to sack the manager.

Which in turn just makes me more annoyed at the person responsible for the error. Because this fickle fanbase are so willing to turn a positive start to the season away and revert to the self loathing, negative 'support.'
Yes we could have managed the game out better, get higher up the pitch, but you have to give YB their due, they were very aggressive from the moment we went to 10 men, moved the ball very well, stretched the play wide, did everything you need to against 10 men and to a very decent level.

The worst part was just how weak the pass was, it was a stupid pass anyway in that scenario with them having so many players on the edge of our box (because even if it reaches De Gea he's going to be under massive pressure from two forwards), but at that speed it's suicidal.

Since I've been watching football, majority of the goals come from a mistake. Yep individual error and it's about poor decision making. I've never seen Jesse in that position on a football pitch before, it's just different. It would be like Harry being put through to be one on one with the keeper in the last minute.

Still a brain fart mistake from Jesse, but it's clear from some of the comments, they are loaded based on a dislike of the player anyway. 'One of our own', clearly that only applies to some...

This. Also the fact that he has a tendency to hide for big parts of the game is infuriating.

Still, he’s had the balls to label himself as one of the best no.10’s in Europe. Think he said this at a time when his form was horrendous.

The issue though is he is getting game time for reasons not just related to his form, if it was purely about form why would you bring him on as a lone striker.

Of course some comments were loaded and his mistake used as a stick to beat him with. But we shouldn't go the other way and try to absolve him of blame for his mistake either. I don't hold it against him but it was his mistake and his alone. He's a midfielder playing out the last few minutes of a game in midfield. It's not like we asked him to play centre back or anything. Every player with 100+ games at the top level knows you shouldn't even attempt that pass in those circumstances.

My take on Lingard last night is quite simple: his mistake cost us the game, no two ways about this, but shit happens and he has no business being on the pitch for Ronaldo of all players in the first place. I really couldn't understand the thinking behind it whatever.
Wan Bissaka's mistake cost us the game if you are talking about 3 points. Lingard's was a poorly executed back pass which sometimes you get away with and other times you don't.

Im not, Im gutted for us, not only did he cost us, you just know he is going to get chance after chance after chance, and probably a new contract.
Gutted for him, gutted for us. And I still think he deserves chance after chance (10-20 minutes every now and then).
Forget about the new contract, though!

It wasn’t the worst decision (Jesse doesn’t see but Pogba motions for him to pass back to De Gea), just the worst execution. I guess this is why players at that level are so painfully one-footed. The stakes are too high. Doing some kind of turn into the middle of the pitch was a pretty risky option too … oh Jesse.

Lingard doesn't cut it at the highest level. There's a reason he suits West Ham / Everton is because that's his level the expectation is far lower and he can be a pivotal member of the team in such circumstances. It's no different to Fred.

If appeasing to the likes of Lingard is required for squad harmony, then that would mean a very weak Ole. Maybe that's just conjecture on our part.

We have limited game time and squad places, I'd rather we promote promising players from the reserves than rewatch Groundhog Day performances from fringe players like Jesse.

It would have done Lingard, the club and the fans a ton of good if he had forced a move this summer right after a good stint with West Ham. Previous academy players from the club have done that when they were no longer guaranteed play time. Eg. Welbeck, Cleverley, Evans. And all of them stay in good stead with the fans. Lingard should have learnt a lesson or two from those. Maybe that is asking too much?

But then, I'm contributing nothing new here. All that is to be said is already said.

I remember SAF punishing Nani by sidelining him after he gave the ball away at the dying minutes which lead to Chelsea scoring.

Ole needs to be ruthless here. Send this fecker to the reserves for a couple of months. He might have just cost us CL knockout places.

I'm a big critic of Lingard, have been for over a year. But yesterday for me wasn't on him, yes he made a mistake that gifted them the winner. But we should never have been in that position in the first place. On top of that, he had very few touches on a weird pitch so I can understand why the pass was underhit. It's frustrating but he's actually done not so bad in the past few weeks.

But we were in that position because shit happens in football. And experienced players should be able to deal with those situations.

We didn't win because of a number of factors that the manager and the entire team can take responsibility for. But the reason we lost is because of Lingard alone. It was a mistake, could have been any player it happens and we move on. But let's stop trying to shift the responsibility here.

Agree. Everyone make mistakes . We shouldn't be clinging to get a draw against YB.

Just not good enough. It's been obvious for years. He looked gone last season and we've become better for it, only for him running down his contract and still getting minutes a year later.
He has done nothing as a United player for years to warrant these minutes, with the quality in the squad we have in tight games, and the youngsters, who could really use those 5-10 minutes, in games that are settled.

He is not contributing enough to reject a contract we inexplicably offered him, for him to be indulged as a regular first team player.

Amazing how many people are standing up for Lingard here when Dan James had been getting dogs abuse for 18 months and didn't do anything near that bad.

Both aren't good enough to be at the club and both should have been sold - James willing to go whilst still young enough enough improve while Lingard wanted to prance around with Ronaldo.

Just shows his mentality really, and should have been forced out of the club kicking and screaming, rather than having smoke blown up his arse by Ole.

The bad performance last night is mostly on Ole with his ridiculous substitutions, but the result is the fault of Lingard alone. How can it not be? A moment of absolute madness put the game on a plate for YB. I cannot stand this "it's not his fault" culture from Ole, Maguire and certain fans.

If a key player like Bruno had made that pass, he would have deserved the same criticism. However, allowing him game time to make amends for his mistake would make perfect sense. Lingard, is a player who should not be at the club. Lingard is a player who should not even be on the pitch ahead of others. Why is Ole giving someone minutes just to get him to sign a new contraact?

Let him stew in the stands until January and take a few million which West Ham will surely offer. It's a complete and utter disgrace that this guy is being allowed to play, especially after rejecting a new contract! We're bending over backwards for him and he doesn't deserve anything from us.

Get out!

For Jesse's own good, Jesse needs to leave Manchester.

I appreciate the guy, and it's not his fault he was sent on in some random and awkward circumstances yesterday, tasked with doing something he's not used to.
He cocked up, but long term he needs to see himself elsewhere.

Not sure why Solskjaer keeps giving him chances when all he's ever done is make Solskjaer look like an idiot.
