He really wasn't that bad.

A few passes were lost in tight spaces more due to a lack of understanding and some slightly mistimed. The commentators mentioning it every 2 minutes obviously didn't help, yet they barely mention it for other players.

He carried the ball really nicely, I think it was a mistake subbing him as his speed was our only real outlet.

On a crappy pitch he still controlled the ball really nicely, but you can see he's still getting used to how the team plays. People need to be patient, when the penny drops for him he's going to be electric IMO.

A nothing player, so far, he has shown literally nothing of his supposed abilities. Wasted money, hype over nothing. Should've went for Haaland instead.

After Kagawa, Mkhitaryan and now Sancho, we should be vary about singing players from Dortmund. Haaland suits Dortmund playing style of high pressing and rapid passing with lots of movement in attack.

We are a team playing slow predictable football largely relying on individual brilliance to win a match.

One moment in the 1st half that pissed me off was when Ronaldo dropped to the middle and got the ball back after a battle with some other players, Ronaldo passed to Sancho who was in acres of space, he ran into the box and then lost possession in a threating position for our attacks, he neither passed nor attempted to dribble!!!! summed up his performance for me, and was rightly taken off when AWB was sent off.

He's only 21 coming from another league and it's taking him time to settle in. Give the lad time.

It's just confidence. A few times last night he seemed unfocused with a heavy touch. That moment when he was moving into their area, defender retreating on the back foot, the exact type of situation we've seen in his countless Dortmund goals & assists, and then he just seems to pause, dither and lose the ball... Now we know he is a master of those situations, so it's a confidence issue. Or mentality.

defo think he'll come good but you have to play him on the left, he doesn't have the explosiveness to be an "out and out" winger on the right. But then he's way behind Pogba on the left. May be one for the next manager to better utilise.

If he ends up fighting for a spot with Rashford, Martial and possibly Ronaldo on the left while I see AWB bombing up and down that right wing by himself again, I swear I am going to lose it.

He's struggling and trying to force something to happen, but with his talent I'm certain he'll come good.
Looks the opposite to me. It’s not that he’s trying to force something to happen, it’s that he’s seemingly too scared to try anything.

Yeah there were a few occasions he got himself in situations where I was thinking ok here we go this is the type of thing he takes advantage of at Dortmund and then he fluffed them. Worst part was he visibly seemed to shirk after one and looked like the last bit of confidence left him.

He doesn’t even really seem to be playing any cutting passes either which is a bit of a worry but hopefully he’ll come good soon. Made a nice run for that Bruno ball that he miss controlled.

He probably also got abit of a shock with the magnitude of Manchester United, I imagine it’s been slightly humbling for him.. many people that are involved with united over the years have said they don’t understand how big a machine it is until your in it. He’s not the main guy here.. not even in top 5.. yet anyway.
He needs to really really take this opportunity.. get his head down and focus on being a team player. Someone like Cavani could teach him so much in that regard.

Leave your ego at the door

He looks low on confidence and struggling to adapt. He hasn’t tried to beat his man when he’s had the chances, always looking to play safe.

I don’t think there’s any doubt he’ll come good, just a shame it looks like it’s going take a bit of time.

He was crap.

He has generally been a bit crap, new signings often are for a little bit. He will come good, I think Ronaldo may be a positive as Sancho has not got as much pressure being the big attacking signing.

I think it is a mix of both, he was terrified to try anything at first and the couple of times he has tried it has not come off for him and probably made the first issue even worse.

The fates of Kagawa and Mkhitaryan cast a long shadow of doubt on Sancho for me. There's also the failure of Nuri Sahin in Real Madrid and Liverpool. Only Gundogan seems to have worked out, possibly because of the extreme system orientated play at City reflects a similarity with Dortmund.
I genuinely want it to work out for this guy, he's only 21, in a new league, adapting to a frequently dysfunctional team, but the omens are not good so far.

He's played about 4 games ffs. It wasn't long ago players were given entire seasons to settle in.

Take me back to a time when everyone didn't need things immediately.

I don't get these opinions which base your expectations for a current player on the totally unrelated performances of past players.

There is absolutely no link between these players other than the club they come from. By this method of appraisal we should buy every single player we can from Sporting Lisbon because they will all absolutely turn out like Bruno and Ronaldo.

Let's avoid Haaland too and let him go to City. Guaranteed flop.

Just watched compilations of all his games so far for United. He definitely has room for improvement and plays worse than he can but I also still don't understand why you wanted him for so long at all costs. Solskjaer uses him totally differently to how he played in Dortmund. It is as if he just thought "young, English, played on both sides for Dortmund, great scorers, I want him" without paying attention to role and playing style. He is no touchline winger, especially not on the right but also not on the left, and nobody to win you isolated one on ones against the full back. He's best suited to a playing style with lots of short passes, possession and surrounded by movement. His area is the half space between the lines, not the wings. Currently not sure that he'll be a success under Solskjaer but still hoping he will eventually come good once he settles in. Thing is, you already have two world class players in Pogba and Bruno who love to operate in the same spaces as Sancho..

Sounds like Kagawa. Look how that ended.

He's obviously several magnitudes of quality better than Kagawa and Kagawa was never played as a winger, not even an inverted one, but yes, he's more of a Kagawa type of player based on his skill set than a Sané, Coman, Vinicius Jr., Rashford etc. A play maker so to speak.

I think we should have prioritised midfield over him personally, considering the other options at our disposal. Goals weren’t really an issue last year, but the midfield was and has been for years. Plenty of time on his side but the way we play this could be a long time

Would be perfect for City. The gung-ho do what you like style we willingly or unwillingly deploy doesn't seem to suit him at the moment. Let's see if he can become more direct and explosive.

Well, this is about systems of play, which absolutely influence the peformance levels of players. In that regard, the fact that all these players come from a club which plays a specific highly organised system of play is certainly a valid link in my eyes. We can certainly argue the level of effect this has on whether they can then export their performance levels to a team with a completely different philosophy, maybe I'm wrong, but the fact the one player of note that had lots of success in another team, went to play for a team with a similar philosophy of highly organised system of play.

I think Haaland will buck this pattern, as he is a generational talent who also performs at a high level for his national team, unlike Sancho.

Ronaldo and Bruno are highly individualistic talents so irrelevant to the above premise I've put forward.

I genuinely want Sancho to succeed, but the precident is not on his side. Will be very happy to have this post thrown back in my face if he's tearing up the league in a couple of months

Here's hoping. If that doesn't happen, I hope you'll sooner or later get a different manager in. Sancho can be a world beater and has the potential to be the best player in your already stacked team under the right coach. I mean, you've got exceptional talent in almost every position right now.

It’s sort of a reflection on the state of things as a society. The whole “I need it now” mentality that social media has contributed towards. Patience is becoming less of a virtue apparently

Sancho was ok to decent against Newcastle and pretty much amongst our worst players in the rest. He’ll come good but it may take a season or even two to rise back to the top. He has to get used to the league and learn how to best fit in with our style of play and It very rarely happens overnight with youngsters. As I said in this thread yesterday, I can eventually see him picking up some form in the CL games where he’s given some space and time on the ball but he’ll find it hard in the league for a while. I personally would be benching him for West Ham at the weekend and trying to keep things more solid and then starting him in the league cup in Masons place

I get your point, but Dortmund's system has changed quite a bit over the years under different managers so examples from a decade ago for instance don't really point to a pattern I don't think.

But more importantly, why is it that when it comes to United fans always expect players to perform outside of a "highly organised system"? Is there a single successful team in the past decade that wasn't a system team?

Said it many times. The hype around Sancho from the fans and media was well over board. He is a good player and will get better with time. Sancho will be on the level of Rashford, nothing more. If people were thinking he was going to be a 100m super star, they better think again.

Sancho probably fits City better than us, while Grealish fits our freestyle type of fotball better.

Its the same thing with Thiago and VDB. VBD would fit Pool better and Thiago us.

The quality gap from the Bundesliga to the Premier League is real. We can't expect anywhere near the same level of goal/assist output for us. His overall performances also haven't been great so far, but I am not overly worried yet. It will take a little time. The technical ability and intelligence is there, so it is more about gelling with the team and gaining confidence.

After four games though?
From my memory It was almost instant yeah. He was banging them in for Newcastle on what felt like a weekly basis. I think fans expected him to come in and just pick up where he’d left off. Back when 7 million was massive money….

Fairly sure it also looked like Cantona was frustrated playing with him too. He’d be missing 1 on 1s a plenty and breaking down play. There was a lot of waste of money and stupid stuff like that in the press at the time almost from the off. I remember all the kids in school saying he was shite. So it’s not just an internet thing, lots of people just have no vision or patience or else they just want to get in early to say I told you so. Either way they can’t lose then. If he’s shite it’s “I told you so” if he eventually comes good it’s all chest out and we are the best and who cares what I was saying. It’s safer to bet against something not happening after all.

Sancho isn’t a waste of money at all but people need to accept he’s a long term project at 21 whether posters have the patience for that or not. He’ll be fine but it could even take a few years before you’re talking about him as a top PL player. It’s still only potential at this stage. Scary potential though! Every team would have taken him if they had the money
