What is Ole doing!

There are millions of threads of Ole in or out and analyzing the match etc. This is not that forum. I would like to discuss what the fk Ole is actually doing tactically. What are they coaching, what are they planning on the training ground, what is the vision. Im completely frustrated at not knowing what he is trying to do.

From what I can tell this is Ole's tactical thinking.

Formation - 4-2-3-1
Main Tactical plan - get the ball quickly and hit the front players quickly. Try Hollywood passes into the front and rely on world class or very top players to pull it out of the bag which we do a lotto be fair.
Defence - Mainly Maguire and Shaw to push forward. Maguire to run out with the ball when he can and hit long balls or try and get to front 3. Shaw attacks on LW. The other CB Varane/Lindelof and WB are more conservative and try to cover runners.
Midfield - He prefers two defensive 8's in midfield. Players that can press quickly. Get the ball and lay it off to preferably a Pogba/Bruno who quickly hit the front 3 with pace. Or pass back to Maguire sometimes Lindelof/Varane who can hit long balls to the front 3 quickly. Basically McFred. Pogba and Fred are good there so they can get the ball and hit passes quickly better than McFred. Which is why Pogba works sometimes against certain opposition. But both players have to adapt their natural game. Both need to be more defensively disciplined. No triangles or passes between the spaces. No holding on to the ball or trying clever flicks. Yes you Pogba. Dominating midfield, controlling possession etc is not the plan.
Attack - Do some Hollywood sht. Make runs behind for long balls if there is space.

Is that it? If you take that as the blueprint then you see the reasoning for the substitutions. Dalot for Sancho was just to cover the RB. Donny off was to move Pogba to midfield so he could hopefully pull a world class pass and get Ronaldo etc in and to get Varane on so we could sit back and take the pressure waiting for the Hollywood pass since we already and given up the midfield. Matic and Jesse were just us giving up and playing for a draw. Jesse partly so he could press more than Ronaldo and there was a slight possibility he could make a run behind and score a late winner.

The other question is if this is the Ole blueprint how far an we go with it. Can we win anything?

The best of his ability, still a massive question mark whether he's good enough?

Yay. Let's start a new Ole = bad thread just to say you don't get his tactics.

Feel like this is an interesting Q but needs to be rephrased or this'll be locked.

Get Ole's quotes from when he came about his style (high press, run more than opposition, attacking football, young players with the right midset etc.) and then assess how he's done at building that team.

Was made to look like an amateur last night in all honesty, a man was sent off and he had no game plan or idea what to do. We lost the game on the substitutions and decision to plant 10 players in our own box to defend against fecking Young Boys for 60 minutes.

Has he EVER talked about tactics? I've seen pretty much every coach go into detail about tactics. Can someone give me a link if he has said anything?

It's hard to find anything really technical from him but that would make sense given he seems hands off and more 'big picture'/institution focused. I hadn't realised he was also relatively hands off at Molde, any resident Norge's might have insight into who the head coach was at the time.

At Molde:
I’m the manager at Molde and I wanted to transfer the role to a traditional English model. I do some of the coaching, maybe 50-50, but I have a lot more to say in and around the club compared to other coaches in Norway.
At United:
“Pace and power, that's what we are. When you have players like we have, with the pace – Paul [Pogba], Anthony [Martial], Alexis [Sanchez], Romelu [Lukaku], [Marcus] Rashford – that's how we played with Andy [Cole], Yorkie [Dwight Yorke], with Giggsy [Ryan Giggs] and Becks [David Beckham] down the sides. We attack quickly when you can. Get the ball up in their half as soon as you can, as quickly as you can. If you score, fantastic, if not then you've got to have patient build-up play. But, attack quickly.”
"But I always believe in forward passes, penetrative passes, wide play, getting crosses in the box. Pass and move, pass and run, play and run forward. Every player I’ve had if you ask them will tell you the same, that it’s about passing forward, running forward."
“I’ve not really spoken too much about this (pressing) but it’s something we work on in training. The coaching staff are fantastic with their enthusiasm, energy and detail, and I saw some graphs before the Southampton game which showed Leeds and Southampton were the two highest-pressing teams this season but we were up there with them. The closer you can win the ball back, the shorter it is to the goal. That’s something we’ve been working on.”
"I think the best teams in the world that win things they trust themselves, they don't chop and change ways of planning for every single one of them.
Lingard speaking: Ole has told us to start quickly, press teams and make sure we're on the front foot and make sure that the first 15-20 minutes can decide the game.”

I've never seen him before hahahah who is he. I look a real mug here hahaha
I didn't realise he was their coach in fairness until the game. Him and Farke were ones who talked way too much! You can probably find him doing workshops on pressing or some shit on youtube.

If you´re going to create a new thread on Ole´s tactics, one could hope for a bit more substance than "Hollywood shit".

But he doesn’t have a us doing Hollywood passes. He’s always trying to get us to play out from the back, which is why we always end up running into trouble.

If you are going to comment on a thread then once could hope for a bit more than nit piking at phrases.

Ive never seen us play out from the back. Its side to side and long balls with the occasional forage into midfield by Maguire. If Ole really wanted to play out from the back he wouldnt have 1 midfielder isolated in midfield all the time

Yes. Few times. After Leeds game he said that tactics was "to give Paul licence to roam and do things". Few times he said that his plan is to give attacking players freedom.

Master tactician.

Stupid thread because he has no tactic or plan or system since December 2018.
He has a plan alright. Might be a shit plan but there is a plan. Thats the reason why I wrote this thread. It seems that no one knows what it is or understands it. If we did then at least we could figure out why he does what he does. For example - Everyone asking why he doesnt play VDB. Oh because he wants to play with a midfield like X. Ok dont agree but at least I know why. Everyone is just confused. Someone with footballing tactical knowledge must be on the CAF and can see what he is at least trying to do.

I actually think he sets up well most the time. Tactics are similar to what I'd expect from Fergie.

The problem is, he never really seems to have a plan b when things are going wrong. His changes are uninspiring or poorly timed. We could previously blame the black of options from the bench, but not this season. In game management needs a lot of work, something that Fergie and Mourinho excelled at - and quite frankly has less to do with coaching ability and more to do with experience.

Hopefully a lesson was learned from last night - and I'm sure he will - but it's hard to accept, as a manager should have done all their lesson learning before coming to United.

Out of curiosity, do Pep have a plan b? Does Klopp have one? If so, what is their plan b?

He doesn’t have any tactics or system or team plan, just hoping each individual to do their own job.

Can't say I watch them enough to give a fair answer.

Based on the tactical shitshow displayed by Pep in last season Champions League final, I'd say no  .

We all love United
The way their manager celebrated like Klopp winds me up a lot. We better make sure we beat them at OT and beat them big and we can celebrate ourselves winning the group and at the expense of kicking that lot out

You not get a clear answer, people just flinging generic football chat about, like they have a clue what they are talking about.......like zero coaching, no tactics......no plan B...........even when there has been plenty of games over the 3 years he has shown he can make subs, he can change the match (after a record amount of comeback wins last season), and he can set up the team to win matches they aren't fancied to win. He done this many a time back when the squad was brutal.

He must be the only manager who when they do lose a game or drop points, minds are total lost online and he is the overwhelming fault for it but when we win it's the players individual brilliance or some crap like that, sort of funny by tiresome at the same time.

Out of curiosity, do you expect him to be able to answer that?

Although they're both fantastic I think the squad would be closer to what Ole wants it to be if neither Pogba or Ronaldo were at the club

I know its Rugby However I listened to a podcast with Brian O'Driscoll ( Irish Rugby player ) last year and he spoke about how teams don't have a plan B they have variations of Plan A. He said the arm chair supporter thinks you can just change everything and it just doesn't work like that ,teams Train and play to specific Targets and game plans they make slight adjustments throughout the game but the plan remains pretty much the same . I think this would apply to Football too we have a game plan and then variation of that plan which possibly doesn't go too far away from what Ole is trying to achieve. I thought it was interesting anyway. Last night we tried to reinforce due to going to 10 men and it went belly up.

I refuse to believe this squad is not good enough to win either EPL or even CL. United has the most squad depth of all teams, yet we have a PE teacher for a manager. Compare him with Pep, Klopp and Tuchel and it becomes evidently clear this guy wouldn't win a thing with prime Xavi and Iniesta in the side.
His fanboys and class of 92 friends in media will still big him up and shift the blame elsewhere. I wish United board had the acumen and decisiveness of Chelsea.

Woah, woah, woah - hold up one minute.

I'm an Ole fan. I'm not in here bashing him, I hope he's here for a long time. But it's ridiculous to not acknowledge that on many occasions Ole has been found wanting in regards to substitutions in important games.

As I said - I'm sure he'll learn from last night and likely reflect on how else he could have approached the game after the red card.

Wagner is actually a pretty good tactical manager, just he had no good PL level players at Huddersfield - in fact most Premier League managers are these days. Ole is the opposite of that, an old school “Big Sam” type of manager who needs top class players who can work things out for themselves on the pitch.

Last night really shouldn't be used as a measurement of his tactical abilities, the red card put us in a bad situation, that being said I can't deny that Ole made a bad situation worse with some very odd tactics and subs.
