Has squad settled down after Ronaldo arrival?
"Life is normal, we’ve signed a good player, there’s always lots of attention around Cristiano. He copes with it and the players get on with their job. It was a big occasion against Newcastle with the excitement of the crowd, we did really well and handed the crowd and Cristiano delivered."

Chances for Dalot?
"Yeah Diogo has had a very good summer with being called up to Euros, he did well for Portugal Under-21s and had a season on loan that he learnt a lot from in Milan.

He kept fit, which was a big thing. And he’s got qualities that we look at trying to exploit more and more, of course he's got more experience. We’re not here just to loan out players for years and years. Last year's loan was was to give him experience and game time and I think he did well when he came on the other night."

New Champions League format coming up?
"It’s quite complicated so I haven’t got to grips with every little detail. Every time there’s a change there's a little bit of resistance, there was resistance to why we needed the Champions League but now it's a fantastic tournament to be in.

It might be a change for the better, who knows, I can’t give you an opinion on how it’s going to look, I’m sure the powers that are looking at it have got a good reason for it and hopefully it will be a better competition."

When will Cavani be involved?
"Edinson hopefully will start training with us after the weekend, maybe Monday, so maybe involved on Wednesday. He had a fantastic season last season, the impact he made when he got his fitness, he struggles with niggly injuries early on.

We feel that to get the best out of him this season we need to get him 100% fit and not rush him. We’ve got a strong squad that will cope with having to let players heal and not risk any further injuries.

I see Edinson having a massive impact, he’s that type of personality and player. He can’t wait to play and he’s working really hard to get back on the pitch."

Reaction to Young Boys defeat
"Of course you wait to see when you see them this morning when you come back in. The attitude is like you expect it to.

They’re focused of course, a little bit disappointed but not too downbeat, we know it’s a setback and we have to do better and we’ve got five games to get 10 to 12 points we need. Not the start we wanted but we’re a good team that can bounce back again and the group is very good."

Highs and lows of United's form...
"No, it doesn’t surprise me. I've got my job and we do our job, you tend to in the media get judged by behaviours and outcomes rather than intentions. It's black and white. But we go into the game with good intentions, we make changes with good intentions, go into a tackle and make a pass with good intentions. The outcome always decides which headline we’ll see and very very rarely is the game fantastic or really really bad, it just hovers about good or not good enough.

We know the expectations are high and we expect more of ourselves as well, the performance wasn’t up to our standard."

Solskjaer asked about midfield and his 'philosophy'
"I’m not here to explain every single detail of how I want my team to play. We want central midfielder who can play. Today’s football is about he’s a good 6, 8, 10 back in the day you had proper midfielders, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Bryan Robson. You see players out there who can attack and defend and that’s what we look for, midfielders who are complete and we try to develop that in our midfield.

It's a balance between with how many you commit forward and how you defend because one little mistake and there’s a counter attack towards you.

Overarching philosophy… I don’t sit here and claim and talk... football is a simple game and it's about making good decisions and being in a team.

Sometimes we look too much into the all intricacies and it’s passion, it's desire - who wants to win the ball? Which one of the striker has the desire to get on the end of crosses?

You can talk about all sorts, it looks nice on paper. But when you go out on that pitch, it's who wants to win, that’s one of the big things. You want winners and I think I’m getting there with my team, team players."

Attention on Jesse Lingard
"He’s got one year left on his contract and of course the club is talking to him and his dad. We see him as a Man United player in the future as well.

Jesse has come back into us after a great spell at West Ham; he showed his qualities, he's back into the England squad, scoring goals.

We really want to see the best of Jesse this season, we support him and we hope to keep him here with us, he’s a red through and through."

So we've learned nothing then. He'll be given a new contract and will be another player we'll find impossible to ship over the years.

He doesn't help himself sometimes. Calling back to former United greats, talking about looking too much at systemic intricacies and then focusing on pashun...it does give his critics more ammo. I do wonder whether he actually has an answer for that question, outside a presser.

Damn, I like Ole and even I got annoyed reading that.

Throw some vague definitions of what you want instead of rehashing the same old non sense around desire and mentality.

What?

He's been offered a contract and refused it. If he doesn't get many games this season he'll leave on a free.
And the club isn't taking the hint clearly. "We see his future as a Man United player". They're clearly trying to convince him to sign, and I wouldn't put it past Ole to give him more game time to convince him.

His response to the midfield question was also utter waffle.

Outside of a few players, we get outworked and outfought consistently - but thankfully sheer talent level often drags us through. We've also shown a disturbing propensity for choking big moments and matches.

Not exactly encouraging to hear that these are supposedly our strengths in Solskjaer's mind.

People believe that players are like candy you can just ship off to wherever you please.

They don't realise that even if a club accepts a bid for a player, that player doesn't have to accept the move.

Doesn't he always say that even two days before the club accepts a bid?

What on earth do you expect him to say?

Oh yeah our midfield is utter shite, I didn't get what I wanted so I'm stuck with them for another year? Throw everyone under the bus? Demand new players? What seriously do you expect him to say. Whilst keeping the players that we do have and their morals up and wanting to play for Man Utd. SAF spoke in waffle and mystery too. Get over it, Ole is here to stay for the time being.

I hope this just some shit he is saying to hope some club come in the winter and pay something for him. Otherwise we are doomed giving that man a new contract.

I'm glad I've learned to pay no attention to what managers say in press conferences because those intricacies (depending on what he's alluding to) are exactly what we lack. We actually look like a team who think our problems in possession will be solved by more "desire" and "winners", which is the problem. Hopefully it isn't actually an accurate representation of the ideas behind the scenes. After all, it isn't Solskjaer himself who handles the coaching so Carrick/McKenna might be the people you'd get a better read of our approach to specifics from.

That said, I also don't see how it helps Solskjaer to lean into the pre-existing perception that he lacks tactical intelligence with that sort of spiel. If Solskjaer was the manager his worst critics imagine him to be, this is exactly the kind of thing he'd say.

Watch the Ole-outers freak out about this. Nothing to see here. He's clearly not interested in trying to explain his tactical approach in public, and that's fair enough.

He definitely sees Robson and Keane when he looks at Mctominay
Which is frightening. The guy puts in a shift and scores goals but he can't control a game and defensively he can be a liability by being far too rash. Madness.

If you think that's what Ole's telling the players to go out and do, you're incredibly naive.

100% Pep is a better coach than Ole - but don't get the hyperbole. What's so crazy about what he said? Do you expect him to talk in detail about his tactics? Never going to happen. He's giving a decent answer to the question especially referring to the intangibles of being a United player.
