SIR ALEX FERGUSON has undertaken an overhaul of his backroom staff by replacing two youth team coaches. Dave Williams and Neil Bailey have been relieved of their duties with Manchester United's Under-19 and Under-17 sides respectively.

Ferguson is believed to have been disappointed at the lack of quality talent rolling off the United production line in the last couple of years.

Since the emergence of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers several years ago, only Wes Brown has come through the ranks subsequently and established himself in the first team.

The Red Devils boss has therefore reshuffled his pack by parting company with Williams and Bailey.

In the wake of their departures, Ferguson has made former United player Brian McClair the new Under-19 coach after the Scot guided the reserves to the title last term.

Jim Ryan, who was Ferguson's assistant last season, has now assumed the mantle of director of football and part of his duties will be to oversee the academy with Les Kershaw.

Ferguson is also believed to be keen to appoint a Brazilian coach to work with the club's young players as he seeks to re-establish United as the pre-eminent force at Academy level.

Which presumably could mean that we'd actually have some Brazilian youngsters in the youth system.

Obviously things are not as right as some of us would like to believe at the youth level.

Sir Alex is dead right - if results are mediocre, chop the dead wood and get new blood in.

Things are begining to look better eg Gomes signed via Royal Antwerp.

Glazer get to a after drink brawl with Shittu, bot
The "Brazilian" coach mentioned here apparently is one that has worked for a long time now in France ... I think his appointment is really "technical" in this sense ... wishing to tap on his knowledge to try setup a more skilllful bunch of youngster ... not really abt starting to import a lot of young Brazilian to OT IMO .. .

Royal Antwerp could be a sort of a solution for the work permit thingy, I remember reading it somewhere about using the club to get around Gomez's work permit though I'm not sure what the exact mechanics are

The result of our youth teams are poor, and it is mentioned that Fletcher and Richardson are the ONLY two young prospect that have shown some promise. Fergie is right to do something to it, because our success is base on a backbone of homegrown players. If we didn't produce that anymore we will suffer in the future.

According to some football site....

Future Stars
Arthur Gomez
Position : Forward
Team : Royal Antwerp (Belgium)
Nationality : Gambia
Notes : Plays for Scorpions in Gambia and after good performances on the youth international stage he attracted the attention of Manchester United. Was recommended to Manchester United by Swedish side Gothenburg after a move there collapsed. After two successful trial Manchester United used their feeder club Royal Antwerp to sign the player from Gambian club Hawks FC.

yes i think so.. hence we've set up feeder clubs in Belgium and Sweden ( gotherburg?)...in future all our non-ec players will play in these countries before being eligible to play in the PL.
