Some nonsense in here. He could not score a single goal for PSG and he'd still be the greatest ever.
Yup. I’ve got friends here who are so pro-Messi/anti-Ronaldo it’s ridiculous. Like Messi gets praised for taking the #30, Ronaldo criticized for getting #7 and now Ronaldo is being criticized because he started his first game, Messi praised for starting on the bench. Messi praised for team player hence no goals, Ronaldo criticized for being selfish hence four goals. Messi praised for joining France and a “struggling team” whereas Ronaldo criticized for taking the easy route (in a team they say sucks in a league they say is the best?), the Messi fanboys are an odd bunch. Weirdest I’ve seen in football.

He finished as La liga topscorer last season, won the Copa and got player of the tournament, is favourite to win his record 7th Ballon D'or and now he's completely finished because he hasn't hit his stride in 2 matches.

Didn't see the game but he seemed rather annoyed at being subbed off last night.

This could be a right soap opera and a mess in PSG and I'm loving every minute of it.
It will be interesting to see how Pochettino will handle this.

Well, it's enough to see certain things, like being out of his comfort zone. Again, he seems to be the only legend in the game that gets so much leeway that he needs special coaches and special formations to make him perform.
I'm sorrs, but that's pretty much the least knowledgeable claim you can come up with. Watch Tifo's video on how Messi would fit in at City and you know what I mean. This whole 'Messi can only excel in Barca's system" can only be labelled as nonsense. There isn't even a Barca system since the coaches during Messi's time there had vastly different approaches. And Messi himself excelled as a 9, 10, second striker and inverted winger. Tifo says something like "from a tactical perspective, where Messi played was mote dependent on the weaknesses of the players surrounding him than his own, at times being shifted from position to position based on the team mates the coach picked".

Imagine Ronaldo had behaved like this when Ole subbed him against Young Boys. The internet would have exploded.

Messi probably wouldn't make a good targetman in a hoofball setup.

Anyway the video you mentioned

He will be a monster as soon as he settles in - he's hardly had a preseason, new team, new league, new surroundings...

He'd better be. Struggling in France would be a massive dent on his legacy after his failures with Argentina over the years.

If he wins the CL with PSG being a passenger, will that boost his legacy? Because apparently playing great and winning no title counts as "failure".

By the way, I think he was pretty good yesterday judging by his highlights. Some people still don't seem to understand that you can play well even if you don't score or assist.

No, in the same way getting to the WC final in 2014 is irrelevant to those who actually watched him in that tournament.

Playing great AND winning is what the greats do.

That's result oriented thinking. I mean, it's up to you but I wouldn't do that.

Oh and by the way, Messi was clearly the best player at WC 2014 alongside Arjen Robben. Everybody who says something different hasn't watched him play or doesn't understand what he's talking about.Give him another face and another name and literally nobody would question that it was deserved.

I mean first we have to separate those who have an agenda and those who don't. There's hardly any in point in presenting your arguments for a sensible appraisal of Messi's legacy if the other person is only trashing Messi to push an agenda.

You say that but Messi's fan boy's have insisted over the years there is no adaption curve for the great one. So by that logic he's a busted flush, right?

He'll be tearing it up by New Years.

For Messi there are different expectations. People expect him to play like an absolute magician, score the most goals and win everything. Always. For other players a couple of tap ins are enough to be the best player. So telling.

It also misses the whole complex dynamics of a 11 vs 11 team game. Of course we've gone over that a million times in the other thread. If Higuain scored his 1 vs 1 and Argentina won would that make Messi a better player and the greatest of all time? I could come up with several instances with the other one, but its not the thread for this. It's just that there are fine margins. A individual player can only be consistently jugded by his own performance. He can't do the job of the other 10 players on the pitch.

You're posting a random blog that has nothing to do with football to back that up?!

He didn't score a single goal when it counted in 2014 and it was clearly a consolation prize for what was supposed to be his tournament. Even he looked embarrassed collecting that award.

Yeah, two games, he has hit the wood work twice.
Yesterday he looked much sharper and involved tbh than the last two times.
But that end product is missing, and good for Ligue 1 defenses, because if he gets going, than might hit the 40s.
He's never hitting 40s. No longer has the pace and acceleration for that.

Ronaldo plays like a magician, scores the most goals, and has won everything and he scores tap ins too. You messi fans are odd.

Yes.

Doesn't matter, because he was the best player on the pitch in pretty much every game he played, including the final.

and it was clearly a consolation prize for what was supposed to be his tournament.
That implies that somebody else deserved it more. Who is that supposed to be?

Even he looked embarrassed collecting that award.
You know, he lost a WC final moments before. I guess he couldn't care less about the individual award at that moment.

Is he favourite to win? I am not sure about that, especially not when his slow start continues.

Magician? If you count useless stepovers as magic, maybe. Ronaldo mainly scores tap ins , its the foundation of his career tbh. From Messi people expect moments of genius and not just simple goals. But yeah thats probably what makes him the best.

Tap ins are a foundation of Ronaldo's career.

I heard it all now.

Take a pause from the internet for a day or 2.

I don't even know where to start with this. It's so far off the mark it's almost embarrassing.

Fantastically summed up his point here I'd say.

Being in the position for those tap ins is a skill feck all possess especially at Utd.
