Well he shouldn't read United forums then. We have given him MILLIONS for doing nothing and he shits on United fans upset with it.
He was talking about people sending death threats to his wife and children when he made those comments. He wasn't shitting on United fans having a go at him. I feel like this point is flying over everyone's head for some reason.

I don't like him partly because I've heard and read he's an entitled prick before now. Those comments reinforce that.
Entitles prick to some, hero to many!

He doesnt deserve any abuse if you ask me, the club does, to keep giving such a limited player huge contracts when he can't stay fit and adds nothing. You'd hope they'd learn but an extension is probably on the way.

He's entitled because people have been talking about him being healthy and just sitting there collecting wages, when he's been so low that he was ashamed to look his teammates in the eye? Read the whole thing first, not cherry picked comments out of context.

Basement dwelling losers spouting shite online has been a common trope for decades.

Jones' comments have nothing to do with wealth and everything to do with randomers with too much time on their hands giving him shit over social media every minute of the day.

I get his comments might be hitting a little close to home for some of you, but you really need to get a fecking grip.

He’s not, that’s how you read it.
I used to come home from work and laze out in front of the computer with pot noodle and other junk. The only difference being I didn’t feel the need to shout at injured footballers.
it’s really what you guys are reading into it
I think it’s harder to read those quotes any other way than it eluding to poor people who choose to pick on him, I mean he created the stereotype himself in those comments, that’s the framework to work with.

Giving him some slack perhaps he’s worded it wrongly and was trying to take a swipe back at some of the scummers that’s have had a go at him but he’s gone about it in entirely the wrong way with those specific comments imo, with their descriptive nature and making it in many ways about wealth.

I also think it's really a poor reply from Jones. A rich man's mindset.

Hopefully he'll be shipped out as soon as possible.
As a retort it's not the best, not sure how it's a rich man's mindset, that part was specifically targetted at trolls, the loser neckbeard trope isn't exactly inappropriate for what he's talking about. Some of the people than chat crap at players on Twitter and Instagram etc either have legit mental problems or are scum of the earth. I'm disappointed too but death threats and wishing real harm on them and the like, is miles overboard.

Why I think it's poor from him, is that it's easy to lump all critism of him as unfair (which he seems to be doing) and it isn't.

I don't think Rio's comments are that out of order, if it was just the one injury then fair enough, but the man is made of glass, he's been here 10 years and has on average 22 games a season. Smalling played 100 more times than him in with a season less at the club. Even if it's not something he's doing wrong in his life and the lad is just super unlucky, I feel for him but it doesn't really change much. The point overall is even if he was suddenly made out of diamonds, he's 4/5th choice CB, he's not going to get the minutes, he's 29 and in theory has another 3-5year at a top level, for his own career he should probably go. Unless he were to get a lower/ pay as you play contract at this other club and immediately get injured then the smart move is to ride this United contract out for max money.

Well, congratulations to all involved on affecting him then. It's probably a huge positive for the club having "fans" and former players affecting players. Nah, he took one for some others, like Lindgard. Good on him.
I'm saying the people "trolling" him weren't worth replying to. A general statement about trolls affecting him and other sportspeople is fine. But to then mock back is him lowering himself and i don't think that's "Good on him". It's not rising above it.

He's very close to a comeback and for me, the best response would have been to simply get back to playing and resuming his career. That would have been good on him.

Speak for yourself not others. You don’t tell others how to feel about something.

Your absolutely right on the bolded, but our Philip didn’t say that did he? He made it about living at home on nothing more than Pepsi and Pot Noodles. What can’t you understand about that?

Stop calling others here scumbags in order to cut the guy even more slack than he’s already had over the last decade.

Comments aside, can anyone defend the club giving him his last two contracts? Please dive in to defend that abhorrent decision.

He is correct that he is very lucky, given the fact he is rinsing the club, collecting his cheque every week, shows the mentality he has. The reason people laugh at him is, it is nearly impossible to be this unavailable to your employer and still receive full pay.

I have zero faith that he is fighting to actually get fit and most of his injuries are mostly a) self-caused by playing like a complete lunatic, b) a lack of professionalism in his prep/recovery/rehab or c) a genuine lack of desire to actually play football. If your body cannot cope with the rigors of professional football - retire!

I couldn't care less about his mental health to be honest when no one, absolutely no one is forcing you to be in the public eye, or be a "professional" sportsman or play for Manchester United. If he had left years ago, no one would give two fecks about him and there would be barely any crap about him on Twitter if he was making irregular appearances for Bradford or Blackburn.
Thing is, they wouldn't pay for him to sit at home and take up the club doctors' time.

(For what it's worth I don't care about his comments on Pot Noodles or Pepsi to be honest, I think a lot of posters are getting caught up in some pseudo-class warfare on behalf of internet trolls, all very odd).

The worst thing about this modern mental health stuff is it allows utter cretins to hide behind this excuse whenever people call them on their bullshit. I get it, trolls are mean to you on Twitter but here's a tip - go to settings and then "mute selected words and phrases" and mute your own name.

It is not how I read it. He literally talks about his money compared to the money of "people living in their mum's basements". He is the one drawing the comparison between his wealth and the wealth of fans.
It's pretty apparent he's not drawing that conclusion. It's very clear he mentions the security he'll have after his career is over as a way of acknowledging how fortunate he is to be in his situation. You know that if he doesn't, then that'll be the first stick used to beat him with.

Yeah sorry, it's ok to rip into people who eat pot noodles.
Mate, you need to chill it's a generalisation, if I were to say "all those evil Bond movie super villians, sitting in their ivory tower, eating caviar should be shot" that doesn't mean you, if you've eaten it once or 100 times.

You said you can understand it hitting close to home with many here, in other words I’m assuming you mean we are either like the trolls he’s eluding to in his comments or that we are poor? Which is it.

Im not the type to be offended by something like this and I’m not, but people pretending something is not offensive when it clearly is to some is annoying if nothing else.

He was a first choice centre back, playing regularly, and looked to be over his injury problems when he signed his latest contract.

You've written about 10 paragraphs on the subject so it's clearly touched a nerve somewhere.

For the record, and if you're desperate to be included in it, I was calling the people that found it hitting close to home losers.

 At folk chucking their toys out of the pram over pot noodle. Well done boys, you’ve bought the caf to a new level!

but from what I've read (which may not be true, granted), he's not really put in the effort.
Respectfully, I think you need to widen your sources of reading material. The bloke has had therapy equipment installed in his home to use after training for goodness sake. He’s travelled abroad for surgery during a worldwide pandemic and associated lock-downs. He played before surgery with bone crunching against bone. How much effort do you want him to make?

Go back a couple of pages, read the full interview in the Reddit link and educate yourself. This bloke has been through hell and deserves all the support the club are giving him.

Try reading the article and Ole's comments and you'll understand what kind of injury he has had and that he has been working hard to get fit. But I guess it's more fun to make up your own narrative.

Are you saying that he should quit his job or he deserves abuse and metal health issues?

People like you kind of make me hope you get some debilitating injury that prevents you from performing your job and your employer treats you like you want Phil Jones to be treated.

The club has showed patience and faith in him, one of the few PL medal winners in our squad.

Also, you denying the fact that almost evey6club has or has recently had a player (or several) who is struggling with recurring injuries, just shows how little you know.

Good one Phil. Man knows how to live. Keyboard warriors having pot noodles while he has tonkotsu ramen with a beautiful chashu.

It’s not his fault the club keeps handing him new contracts. Direct your “anger” elsewhere.

Yeah, that's not going to help you Phil.

Doesn't once mention that he's aware of the fact he's permanently never fit to contribute and just how ridiculously long these periods of unavailability are. Just calls everybody who questions it a skint idiot on the dole basically. Which is far from the truth because the only real form of critique he's garnered in all this time is from one of his peers.

I've been one to question him, absolutely, still do and I think Rio meant what he said and has been pressured to backtrack. Also the 'many faces of Phil Jones' are entirely his doing, nobody controls his face.

Apparently this makes me a bum living in my mum's house eating cold microwave noodles... Yet I moved out of my Mum's at 18, work for myself and hate pot noodles... yeah, I'm kind of a big deal Phil!!
Rio was made to backtrack because he was talking nonsense. He was ignorant and making up stuff based on rumours.

I can't imagine the club new much about this interview. Surely the PR people would have advised him otherwise?

Footballers are in a bubble, his comments are naive and show he has little to no perspective on real life.

The best thing Jones could do is learn to laugh at himself and when people troll him online he should just laugh along with it. It's the only way to neutralise trolls, talking in the press about how the trolls get under his skin just encourages them more.
I doubt having fans shout abuse at him and his family for him being injured will be funny to him.

Welp, that's odd from a member of staff

Are you saying that he should quit his job or he deserves abuse and metal health issues?
Clearly, you cannot read. I said he can insulate himself from the abuse and ignore it - does he deserve it? No. Is the internet a pretty awful place (as the quote below me shows) - yes.

This is a PR exercise for him to get some sympathy. It's worked like a charm as everyone is just swallowing this puff piece and believing he is so hard done by. While I'm sure this knee injury is bad, can you explain his previous multiple other injuries? We are a professional sports club, he didn't get CV19, he didn't (thank god) get stricken with a horrible illness.

People like you kind of make me hope you get some debilitating injury that prevents you from performing your job and your employer treats you like you want Phil Jones to be treated.

Imagine, for one second, on a forum hoping that someone you don't know gets a debilitating injury so they cannot do their job?

Imagine not knowing this person and what they have gone through injuries, a sickness that has affected their job, etc. Again imagine, that no fecking employer, ever would stand by someone like MUFC have stood by Phil Jones. Imagine defending a millionaire you've never met because someone doesn't align with your sympathy levels and wishing an injury where, should they not be able to do their job, would become homeless.

What a despicable little person you are.

Was Jones the first choice CB at United at this time? Made 24 appearances in all comps. 18 in the Prem. Perhaps, this is bollocks?

He isn't stereotyping internet trolls. He is poking fun at people in unfortunate situations where poverty and no opportunity has forced them into a situation where they're still living with parents. He is out of touch with society.

Its possible for people to lump him with others and say he is a chunky money grabbing twat, just like Tevez, but that would be very unfair because at least Tevez had a set of knees that worked. Cant even say Phil Jones has been on the dole, because he gladly accepted millions more when he knew he has no knees. He should be ashamed that, with the millions hes amassed in his career, he still had the cheek to be a burden on our wage bill whilst trying to recover for a set of fans that don't want him here anymore. During any negotiation, if he had the decency, he could have taken a pay cut. Maybe he did? But hes obviously not confident enough to talk and let the fans know about it, if that indeed is the case.

I have no problem at all with what Jones had to say, I have no problem with measured criticism of anybody, but the over the top way keyboard warriors think they have a right to weigh into people is a joke, especially those idiots who issue death threats, I mean what utter asshats, actually I am wrong, it is no joke, the sooner we get some kind of protection and get these morons prosecuted the better, not just against celebrities but throughout society the idea that you can commit such hatred online and get away scot-free that is a the joke.

That said you cannot complain about those Jones memes, they are the finest

Yeah, it feels good seeing him diss the incels that send his wife and kids death threats.

And also the people telling him to quite his job. Feck 'em. As if healthy 28y olds have their meniscus removed. he acquired the injury doing his job ffs.
