First half is ok, 2nd half is like him ~2 years ago when starting for us.

Posting on this thread because it's the only thing I have to say that's positive today - I thought that was his best performance yet from an attacking point of view. It wasn't consistently good but it was clear he has been working on being more progressive in his passing and movement, and he even took players on and won a few times with the ball at his feet. Shame he didn't cross the ball as far as I can remember.

Been harsh on him, but he was good on the ball today, found himself in good spaces and got forward every chance he got. Hope he carries this on.

I thought he was our best player on the pitch today, for whatever that’s worth.

I really enjoyed how villa would press him with a couple of player and he would get out with the ball

Thought he did really well today

He was good today, maybe our best player on the pitch though we performed poorly as a team. He did try to take the game to Villa and broke out of the press pretty well.

Only criticism is he could have tried to cross the ball whenever he got into those good positions. Can't help but think back to the days that G.Neville or even Brown would have done so. Without crosses from the wing, our gameplay was very predictable.

He needs to be sat. I don't care who replace him with, as long as they're an actual footballer.

In the second half the Villa players stopped marking him - even in their half. Because he could have the freedom of Old Trafford and still offer less threat than Wes Brown. And I mean, today, wherever Wes is watching the match.

Some of his touches, passing and overall play were below amateur level. I realise it's a confidence thing, but he's not that young, he's got more than 100 professional apperances.

What irritates me is he has chances to cross many times but plays inside. Rinse and repeat. There is no attacking outlet from right side. Whoever is the midfielder supporting him has to take responsibility of both creating space and crossing too if needed. He just stands there, passing back and sideways to available player. Even that too he fecks up often.

I thought he had a decent game, stopped an open goal at one point and ran with the ball well, he's certainly lacking confidence in his crossing though.

Bizarre timing to make that post. He played very well today. One of very few United players you can say that about. The agenda is strong with this one…

Yeah. Honestly, I wouldn't care too much if he was crossing but crossing badly. Its his refusal to even consider putting the ball into the box. He seems to see his role as being a decoy for Greenwood, or to hold the ball until Bruno drifts wide and puts a cross in for him. If he just swung a few balls in, eventually, one or two of them would fall in a dangerous area even if they weren't pinpoint. A defender may make a mistake on one, a goalie may misjudge flight...him being on that right hand side means our opportunity to cause chaos and panic in the area goes down by levels.

Just try Aaron, you might put 10 crap crosses in but the 11th might lead to a second ball situation that sees Cristiano score a tap in.

Maybe he was a bit better in the second half, but I thought they funelled it out to him in our half every time, and about half thoes times we then lost it.

Regardless, must be the worst FB at a major club right now in terms of attacking and ball progression.

Don't know the stats of this season for crosses attempted (doesn't seem to be attempting) but he was putting in crosses last season. Got few assists as well. Not sure why seems to be going backwards in that regard.

Because sometimes I actually see who's of our players is in the box and most of the time it's only Cristiano and no one else.

And when you take in consideration that Villa played with 3 CB's today, you think to yourself - what is the chance that "my" cross would end up at Cristiano ?

He was good today, showed some good dribbling ability and pushed forward quite a bit

Wasn't his worst game but 50 million looks about 30 million too much.

I wasn't sold in his first season and I was even more worried in his second.

Positional wise he struggles and he's not technically up there with the better players in his position. Keane said the same and I agree, he's not up to it.

Not sure why he is getting praise for being competent on the ball, for once.

He was, yet again, found positionally inadequate on crosses and balls in.

Wasn’t bad today but wasn’t particularly good either. When you compare him to Shaw or TAA, he’s nowhere near. He also doesn’t seem to have improved much since he joined. Trippier would have been an upgrade.

He's so bizarre. Sometimes (though not as often as you'd hope) he looks like an extremely competent footballer... Can pass his way out of tight spaces, dribble past players and generally looks promising.... And then other times simply turning and passing the ball 5 yards seems completely beyond him.

This can all also take place in the same minute.

What I don't understand is his reluctance to cross the ball. He will pass it side ways to McTominay who will also is reluctant to cross and passes sideways again.

I never see Fred or McTominay ever cross the ball. Does Carrick and McKena not think it's fundamental for them to cross the ball which will give us more dimensions in attack.

Yes I've noticed this as well, sometimes he's like twinkle getting out of tight spaces, can look very accomplished and has whipped in some dangerous balls, then it's like a switched has been flipped

Today was a mixed bag

This is where good coaching can come into it, he needs more practice on the touchline, to be more alert, he will then be more natural in these moments. It can be tough to have the fans right there, he's looks conscious of it and not switched on to plays and passes back to him.

He's had some good games this season with some really poor ones.

This was a good game from him.

Really awkward on the ball today and didn't offer enough to support the attack, there's a big gulf between him and Shaw.
Did you actually watch the game? He’s been very bad recently. But today he was one of our best players. Some great runs, good touches and passes. Very confident and good on the ball today which was a revelation to me. Shaw was dogshit on the other hand. Real story of Good Bear Bad Bear.

Totally agree. And yeah but no one seemed to want to cross the ball in today. We’re such a schizophrenic team. Against West Ham we kept crossing the ball in against a rock solid defence and with that well known poacher and header of the ball Tony Martial there to score the goals. Then today we continuously got to the box and refused to cross the ball with that terrible header and awful poacher Ronaldo on the box. Wait, did I get that the wrong way around? Clearly Ole and his staff did.

Great review for his previous games but complete trash for how he played today. He was a million times better today. Way more composed, sharp and effective in attack as well as beating the press.

I thought he was very good today, especially at beating the press. Surprised to see some of the comments in here.

Yeah probably beat their press 2-3 times and shit the bed with hospital passes. There is reason why teams afford him so much space.

The less we play him the better, we are seeing Dalot looking like he might get up to speed but we still insist on playing Bissaka because of defense, Dalot is an Okay defender but better going foward, we could do with someone who crosses the ball in early, we've got Ronnie and Cavani now just put a good ball in to the box and those guys would attack it.

Scotty did try to cross the ball from the right end side in this game but his ball was too deep and to the far corner

He needs decent competition next season. Mukiele or Trippier would be solid.
Mukiele is a disaster. He would be similar to Aurier. Will give you a couple of games where he looks spectacular with his forward runs and athleticism, but will mostly be a liability defensively. Would not want him anywhere near here.
