Coming Home in the Dark

A school teacher is forced to confront a brutal act from his past when a pair of ruthless drifters takes him and his family on a nightmare road-trip.
This was so close to stunning.
It was brutal at times, not just for shock value but because there was a reasoning behind it, the acting was very good, the setting was stunning, the directing was brilliant.
There was a few nice twists in it.
If you love thrillers or slow burn horror (this film definitely gives off horror vibes) than it is definitely worth your time.

This could've been a 9 or even a 10, the plot let it down a bit.

7.5/10

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Drags a bit in the middle but the two main cast members (Emma Stone and Emma Thompson) really carry the film with excellent performances. Helps that I'm slightly in love with Emma Stone. Worth a watch 7/10

Mad Max: Fury Road. I've been reading that this is seen as one of the best action films of all time, and while I don't think it's quite that great (but then what is? hmmm...), it is very good. There isn't too much story to speak off, it's all about getting going into a protracted truck/car chase, with the usual insane (and often very cool) Mad Max design and general environment. I'm not a fan of all the previous Mad Max films, but this one nails all of it: the bad guys, the design, the pace, the action - it's just really well done. Very nicely shot also, at many moments often quite beautiful.

Man of Steel (2013)

Even after frequent viewings, this shit still absolutely rocks. A lesson to the Marvel loons on how to make a solid superhero movie without all of the hammy acting, camp characters and cliched dialogue. Movie still looks great, slick effects and action sequences still entertain and I doubt whether you'll get anyone more perfectly cast as a superhero/villain than Caviill. Still in my all-time top 5 superhero movies. Another great offering from the man Snyder. Love it, love it, love it!

I'm giving this a 8.5/10.

Popped up on Prime. It sounded like it'd be shit in a good way, but it was just shit. An old firm get back together to have a scrap with some local yobs. Every character is just a cartoon. They even cast Richard Blackwood as some gruff local copper trying to stamp out all the gang violence. I believe it was originally titled 'hoodies vs hooligans', so the one positive of the film is that they didn't end up calling it that. It might genuinely be one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I enjoyed this a lot too, it's a very well done thriller

it reminded me of a British horror film I watched as a kid that scared the living crap outta me, that I can't remember the name of

just the thought of being in that scenario with your family is terrifying

The soundtrack is amazing, hope you were blasting it through the roof. It’s one of the movies where the cinema experience enhances it even more. One of my favourites.

Malignant

Stupid but entertaining stupid.

The Green Knight

Arty but not entertaining arty. Not surprised to see that it's based on a poem. Hopefully the director fancies a stab at putting The Canterbury Tales to screen as I've always thought that nobody would want to see that either.

Candyman

Yeah it's ok. Some good nods back to the original.

I actually refused to watch this so no review from me. Sounded like pure unconcentrated Shyamalan.
He's gone to another level with this one. We all thought The Happening was peak unfiltered Shyamalan but it turns out it can go deeper. I don't know what his intentions are anymore but it isn't to make movies. There is something sinister about what he's doing I'm sure of it. I feel like it's maybe racism against the entire human race.

My God that was boring. And not nearly as deep as it thinks it is.

Ana de Armas is pretty.

Free Guy - As video game movies go it was actually pretty good fun. Even though it wasn't based on a real video game, but was basically GTA Online, without saying GTA Online. So, yeah, GTA Online: The Movie, featuring Deadpool, gets a thumbs up from me.

Ha, no, that would have meant no film, since it would have woken up my kids. ;) I did notice that it's not a general symphonic soundtrack. Like, the sparse percussion when Furiosa and Max first meet and fight gave a really peculiar (and good!) flavour to that scene.

Missed that and no, is it any good?
That million dollar question. I thought it was ok. Interesting story with a bit of twist. Enough to make it compelling viewing. I could probably do with watching it again myself.

Really good film aside from the ending fight scene for me - it went from being quite a gritty and real (despite the premise of the film!) watch to a bit cartoonish. There was that in particular scene where superman is flying through the air punching Zod forwards repetitively and the camera is almost a go-pro on his back...remember being really disappointed in that.
Costner, Crowe, Shannon, Traue all immense as supporting case, the scenes on Kryton were brilliantly shot and designed in particular.

Yeah I know the scene you're talking about well but I didn't find it that offensive and agree with the Krypton planet and tech. Thought the World Engine was pretty cool. I just found it really refreshing to have almost zero comic relief every 15 minutes. I prefer my super hero movies straight and without any hammed up characters. Even Fishburne's Daily Planet editor was spared the nonsensical ramblings that we have to endure with Spiderman's Jonah Jameson. I know that's how he is in the comics but I don't want it in my movies so props to Snyder for that. ( I know we're not so fortunate with The Flash).

I agree that Shannon brought the right amount of menace to the movie though you couldn't help empathising with him at the same time and of course it's ridiculous just how absolutely gorgeous Antje Traue is. I'm so happy she gets a decent amount of screen time.

Even for a martial arts flick the story and acting are really bad, but the fights are awesome. Tiger Chen is a bit generic though.

I struggled through the first half hour and then ended up quite enjoying it. Its basically the Truman Show meets Wreck it Ralph and it won't appeal that much to non-gamers, but those of a certain age will probably adore it. I don't know what compelled them to cast Taika Waititi in this because I thought he ruined every scene he was in, but Jodie Comer and bloke from Stranger Things were both good. Reynolds is always watchable.

Been re-watching clips non stop since this and it's just so good - you can tell how much thought went into the plot and backstory (word engine scenes are awesome, score is awesome, even the writing is high quality for a superhero film) and I'd love to see some kind of prequel although I guess there'd be limited interest given no superman.

Prisoners
Making my way through Villeneuve's filmography before Dune arrives in the UK. I wish I'd watched this one sooner, as the missing-children-in-small-town-USA subgenre feels like it's been done to death in recent years. Still, this was a masterful attempt, and the 2.5 hour runtime breezed by; it actually could have done with another half hour to flesh out certain plot strands. Special mention to Hugh Jackman, who stood out in a stellar ensemble cast. 8/10

Shot in one take, it follows the disintegration of a head chef as he tries to juggle the demands of running a busy restaurant while dealing with personal issues. The one take direction suits the general air of barely controlled chaos. Ultimately, your opinion of this film will depend on whether you like Stephen Graham. He’s on full throttle here with the Scouse accent turned up to 11.

Dune - Excellent nap. The dim lighting, the constant sombre tone and the overwhelming Villeneuveian blandess made it very easy to shut one's eyes to and nap away. The horrible Zimmer score woke me up now and then though.

As good as the last one was bad.

Basically proving he really is a one-trick pony.

Given his trick is to make beautiful looking, immersive universe, well crafted films, I'm fine with it.

I feel people give Villeneuve a hard ride cos he's not an auteur, but cinema is also a visual art and he's excellent in that regard. He doesn't really have a vision, or themes from film to film... but he doesn't pretend to either. He just makes really good films.

Can you elaborate on the ‘doesn’t really have a vision’ part? I’m curious by what exactly you meant.

I think rn.7s talking very specifically about how he only has one emotional tone range, a sort of somber profundity. He and I had a quick exchange about it before 2049 came out.

Nothing to do with the visuals; I agree he’s up there, although he feels like those architecture/design students who always wear a black turtleneck and dark denim and black horn-rimmed glasses.

I feel like a lot of directors see cinema as a medium to share their vision of the world and of certain themes (social matters, family dynamics, ...) I don't think Villeneuve has anything to say about anything, I think he just enjoys making films and limits himself to them as a visual medium. I understand why that makes him uninteresting for some, and can leave you cold, but I kind of appreciate the simplicity and, to an extent, brutality of his approach to cinema. What you see is what you get, nothing more, and that's cool.

Went into the movie with little expectation as I felt this had been done before, but boy was I surprised. Actually a really fun movie. 8/10
