He was okay, left stranded in the 1st half, was steady in the 2nd, he is what he is, an average midfielder.

Wouldn’t look out of place playing for Crystal Palace really. Has no business being first choice for Man United.

How he was allowed to stay on the pitch for so long is beyond me but doesn't suprise me at all.

It’s just not his position. You limit all of his strengths and maximise his weaknesses. Not helped by Bruno and Pogba playing far too high at the same time either side of him.

Been absolutely all over the place since coming back into the team. And not in a good way. Absolutely diabolical first half. Certainly Pogba playing so high up the pitch didn’t help him but there was little to no effort to get on the ball and he was so poor defensively.

He was decent today. Not sure what match you guys were watching.

Had a couple of lapses (against Pau Torres and for the goal). But no DM ever gets it right 100%. That's why you always hunt in packs. If it was possible for a single player to defend all on their own, you'd only play with with defenders and miss out DMs altogether.

Quality wise he is our worst midfielder. Matic with 45 years is twice the player than McT is.

Bruno and Pogba didn't help him but that performance just shows this guy clearly isn't a no.6. I don't think he understands how to play as a single pivot DM.

This. I don't think he's a holding midfielder. Doesn't have that in him.

He's a average player who never even stood out at youth level IMO. So him being average is normal for him. I've accepted that and it's not his fault he's selected to play.

I didn't like his performance and the fact that he was constantly standing surrounded by opposition players in the midfield. It felt like he was forcing the defenders to play sideways all the time and made our build up play predictable. At no point was he making effort to look around, find some space to run into to get the ball. He wasn't trying to drop between defenders and pick up the ball either. Maybe it was the instructions he's got but then when Matic plays there he does deep drop, does try to take the ball off of defence and carry it if not pass it.

It certainly doesn't help that I watched Veratti and Idrissa Gueye y'day and they were so good at taking the ball off of defenders and bringing it out despite their team being under such constant pressure.

Put in probably the worst midfield performance this season against Villa and then is rewarded with another start. Baffling.

Terrible footballer.

Can defend a bit, can finish a bit, but everything else that involves a ball at his feet he's terrible at. He's worse than Fellani was, and only looks better to the casual observants because he's got better players around him.

We're never going to cleanly control a game with him in midfield. If we brought in a competent manager he'd be the first one out.

@Vaibhav Raj he dropped deep to get the ball plenty in the first half. And then passed sideways or backwards. By the end of the first half both Pogba and Bruno were in his position to get the ball.

His positioning is absolutely horrible. Its almost like he sees the danger and purposefully moves away from it and leaves the easiest forward pass on for the attacker. He doesn't seem to be pressing, and he doesn't seem to be sitting and blocking passing lanes. Its almost like he expects the opposition to just pass the ball to him. What even worse is that Ole doesn't seem to see this as an issue. Almost all the attacks against us can be stopped if we had a Carrick like player that just blocked the obvious passing lane but McTominay just becomes lost when the player he's marking decides to move 5 yards.

I still don't understand his purpose here. He's a nothing player for me, a squad player at best. It's baffling to me the amount of preference shown to him over players who could do better.

Just shows how hard sitting alone is positionally, could hear the coaches yelling at him first half but he was poor. We were cut open at will for the first 45min.

I’d honestly just try for someone on loan in Jan who is average but plays the role and isn’t slow like Matic if we want to use that system.

Exactly. Serious wtf management. I’m really starting to give up on Ole now. Super relieved we won. Never want us to lose. But Jesus that was bad. Coulda scored 5 against us in the first half. Got out of jail through worldie from Telles and Ron doing what Ron does after playing terrible all game.

McTominay actually had a good game as a DM. Several interceptions and very steady on the ball. I can´t recall him misplacing a single pass.

I just want to see a functioning midfield. Just once against quality opposition. It hasn’t happened this season without DvB on the pitch. So perhaps he should play against quality opposition. Just once ?

A functioning midfield, what's that?

Villareal won the MF battle. McTominah and Pogba got overrun. Matic made a huge difference when he came on.

Just has the wrong instincts for a defensive player. Which would be okay if he wasn't sent out there to be our sole central midfielder.

Kind of unforgiveable on their goal that he chased forward over the halfway line. He has to be smart enough to know his role in the team.

Ole set him up to fail, and fail he did.

I thought he actually did better than usual. Tidy on the ball, kept it moving.

His defensive positioning was still poor and he still didn't make himself available enough - Villarreal had two midfielders with 20+ more attempted passes than him.

I'd like to believe it's the rapid comeback from surgery that's got McTominay playing so poorly. However, I still doubt whether he can successfully play as a #6.

His problem is he marks people not space. He sells himself so often and leaves gaps. Instead of occupying passing lanes. Maybe that's harsh cos his covering can be good? However, I just feel like him & Fred cover each others deficiencies when they're together. So you don't actually notice how often they go walkies until they play with somebody else.

I know it's partly tactical, because our centre midfielders are meant to cover the fullback attacking. But even when we are not attacking he gets sucked in. It's a problem.

How was it not? Neither he nor Pogba wanted to take the ball off the defenders and we had a huge gap in the middle.
It couldn't be a problem if we weren't playing with a midfield in the first place.
