Remember when Ole used to sit deep and hit on the break and everyone said 'that's the easy way to play football, anyone can do that'.. guess what other clubs are now doing that to us game in game out. We need to adapt.
Yeah, that’s what teams without a squad as talented as ours do. I expected Villa Real to do that tonight but they didn’t. They absolutely took us to the cleaners but somehow didn’t whitewash us. We were terrible for an hour then a wonder goal woke us up and they suddenly got scared. Then they came and again were unlucky. We need to learn how to play proper football.

Not at all. I want and expect us to win every game, as I should. I’m also practical. We are improving season on season IMO. It’s still early and there are lots of teams that haven’t kicked in to gear - Chelsea have just lost two in a row (good teams though fair enough), City aren’t looking too hot without a striker, Barca and Madrid are all over the show, Juve doing terrible in the league. We’ve got a LOT of players and the first eleven is going to take some time to settle in to place and show itself.

People forget some of the champions league games we lost in the Fergie years against so called lesser opposition. Especially Spanish teams. “Fergie time” was coined basically because we’d been playing shite and got a last minute winner! Just like tonight.

I see I shouldn’t post in here though. I’m not rabid “Ole out” enough
There is absolutely no valid comparison you can make to anything that went during SAF’s tenure.

Because we were struggling to do the Sancho deal and Pogba looked to be leaving and DvB was a fairly easy deal to do.
Huh? And now we have Sancho and Pogba is still looking to leave - so what’s the reason for Donny still not playing?

Would you say that PSG was uber cautious last night playing on the counter at home against City with 3 defensive-first CMs or playing a big team sensibly that gave your team a chance to get a result.

United played sensibly against big teams last season and faired pretty well. I don't fault how teams setup to succeed, that's on them and could careless if they play 6 at the back. If they're in it and give themselves a chance to get a result, then fair play.
PSG were playing Manchester City the same team who played them off the park last year and arguably the best football team in the world on their day.

We played against Villarreal who despite been a well drilled unit are hardly challengers for the cup like we should be.

We dodged a bullet anyways so fingers crossed they don’t play as well on their own turf.

Ole know players especially Ronaldo at his age couldn't play a 90 mins pressing game, he let everything come late ( last 15 mins) until every players got tired, the front line start pressing and increase the tempo to get a winning goal, opponent will not have time to recover from the goal.

This is a great tactic. Ole still the man !!! Great win Great Ole.

I don’t trust him anymore.
If Villareal had our quality up front, they would have been at least 4-0 up in the first half.
We play hoof ball, move the ball nervously and shaky and clearly our attacking players have no other instructions than “go out there and smash it”.
We’ve beaten a nasty team, sure. But we don’t seem to be improving.
Ole has done a terrific job at rebuilding the squad and teaching them United mentality.
Unfortunately a lot of fight and desire will only get us this far.
We were ruthless with LVG and replaced hom after winning FA cup.

With Ole I feel we might have to do the same.
I’m afraid we’ll hit form and go on a great run for 15-20 games and then we’ll collapse. Just like last season.

The point of it is, people criticize Ole for being practical and setting his team up to succeed by saying they've been "uber cautious" as if it is a negative thing and should be a stick to beat him with.

Having practicality isn't a sign of weakness. And within practicality, risk is still involved.

100% spot on. Apparently people think like these ole out fans have personal vendetta against him. I could not care less if our manager is Rafa Benitez if we won the league. Those ole outers will be happy if Ole can show that he can win with this team.
Save your breath. I've been saying this many times but they don't buy it. In their heads, they think that Ole outers want Ole and the club to fail so we can rack up valuable Redcafe points. Absolutely childish mindset.

How one can be so biased and devoted to one manager to the point of delusion is another matter.

Came to 2 conclusions in this thread.

1) Never doubt Ole at every start of the season. His believers will always rebut by saying "It's only been X amount of games!" , as if the previous years don't matter at all.

2) Do not engage in any Ole debate with any poster with the name Ole in his tag name. You know you ain't gonna win this battle.

.... Villarreal played coward, defensive football. Easier to carve us open.

You lot are jealous Villarreal players can have easy 1 v 1 situations and slide in cute balls here and there. Utter bollocks.

They have space, we didn't. Feels nice beating teams with cowardly tactics.

Posts from Ole's supporters are just hilarious, there is absolutely no way someone can write stuff like this with a straight face  It's quite clear majority of them don't watch our games and just check the scores.

Post match he claimed we played with two number 8s. On paper maybe but that was as far from a 4-3-3 as we've seen all season. Bruno played off the striker again and Pogba was way too far up top too. Was more of a 4-1-4. No idea why he can't get it in the head of these two to play deeper.

I watched the game.

You must be demanding 3-0 comfortable tiki taka FIFA game score because we have better players, I see.

Ole gave a very honest interview with a danish channel after the game:

- very poor defending from us
- lost the ball to easily
- need to play with lower pressure at times and better balance
- lucky to win
- played poorly
- and if we continue to play like this we won’t win anything.

He knows better than anyone that we need to improve our play In the coming weeks.

Yea, you clearly did

No, I am not demanding anything extraordinary. But is it too much to ask to not get battered for majority of the game at home against Villareal (or most of other teams we play)? We were shambolic yesterday but it's not something that happens once in half a year. It was our typical performance with Ole in charge which we can see every single week. We were carved open so many times against "defensive" Villareal side it's ridiculous. If you haven't noticed it while "watching" the game, you clearly didn't watch the game.

Embarrassed for Ole after that display. How could he watch that and make no changes for so long? Who was the genius that decided Dalot would suffice as back up RB? What was our plan to win the game? Where was Pogba supposed to be playing? Can’t he see we are being overrun on counter attack every single game now and why hasn’t he done anything about this?
With this squad we should be cruising through games like this. It’s not acceptable and shouldn’t be allowed to continue. Fans in the ground still chanting his name and supporting him are enabling our owners to keep this disaster movie rolling.

Some interesting takes in this thread. I looked at some numbers. Make of them what you will. Obviously, the current season hasn't gone far enough for us to make anything of it yet but I chucked it in just because...

Caveats:
  • These are from Transfermarkt.
  • I took the overall record for the manager (so every win counts as 3 pts, draw as 1 pt - regardless of cup / league) to get a sense of the overall performance

There is way too much media crap surrounding us.

We haven’t started very well but we still have points on the board in the league and Europe.

We play well in patches, Ole is a pragmatic manager, we will start to play very well again soon, he is definitely the right manager for us and we will start to see it as the season progresses.

Yes he needs to win something or challenge for the league however he can’t do that in September hence let’s see at the end of the season.

Bailed out by individual brilliance today. Even when we had the ball, we did not look like scoring. While everytime they got the ball, it seemed like DDG had to make a save. I will give credit to him for the subs though, was the right choice.

I don't think we have a chance to win anything this season, and the board won't sack him. So another season spent in limbo. Surely, even the Glazers want to see their investment this season pay off, not just as top 4.

Yes, we were having difficulties finding those chances, playing badly, that is normal in this competition. Real Madrid lost the other night, City (with pattern of play ), Chelsea.

Players are struggling, maybe bad form, or what not, but come on, football is not all about pattern of fecking play.

That's good, at least he sees the problems. That better balance is continuously eluding us though, and at this point I have little faith in his ability to put together a consistent team. Everything so far points to this season being more of the same: streakiness, disjointed football, getting away with awful performances due to top class attackers.

Because these two are far more bothered about stats, scoring and assisting. They are two egotistical fellows who want to be the main men.
Aside that, Bruno generally is someone who is not an 8, heck he is not even a 10! I would call him a 9.5 Any attempt to play him deeper he will be playing like how he played for Portugal. He doesnt have the discipline, poise, patience and skill to play deeper.
Pogba is just confused and I would say presents more problems than solution.

Oh come on. We don't even need to go into tactics and the sort. De Gea was voted man of the match on manutd.com. What does that imply about the game? Even if I did not watch the game (which I did), certainly it doesn't make sense to see our keeper being awarded MOTM while the opponent played defensive football? DDG kept us well in the game especially in the first half, making ridiculous saves after another. It certainly wasn't a result of Villareal's "boring defensive cowardly" football.

Not really, it’s a fact, he’s managed two consecutive league finishes in the top four, the first manager to do this since Ferguson left. We talk about trophies however the only trophy any proper United fan cares about is either the league or the champions league.

He still is the right manager for us, I don’t actually think he is the elephant in the room, I actually think it’s Pogba, there is a lot of politics around playing him at the moment for me.

We will play better football, it will definitely come. However as I said Ole needs to challenge for the league this season, I think he knows this aswell.

Like I said, all of their chances came from 1v1 situations vs fullbacks. They did have more space to attack.

Again, that stupid argument - "bailed out by individual brilliance".. The players struggled at times to place a simple pass correctly. Ole changed the game with his subs. Matic controlled the midfield and Lingard assisted Ronnie. So essentially, on a day where players struggled and most of the defence players was out and manye players clearly did not have a very good day, he made tactical changes that turned the game. Also add, that individual brilliance is part of everything in football. All good passes, shots, tackles etc are individual brilliance. How can that be an argument. Every team has it and depends on it..

I have faith. This discussion is not new at the beginning of a season. Lets see before christmas. I reckon things look very good by then, if injuries does not become a big problem.

He's also spent more money than any other manager and has achieved less. Also when exactly is this good football going to come? 3 years in and we are still playing the same football from when he joined. At this point we keep being promised all this stuff with Ole, surely the least you lot can do is give us a year? 2030? 50? I'm not sure how long I have to wait!

Villareal will be wondering how they left with a loss today. They outclassed and dominated us all over the pitch, at our home turf. Can you imagine if we were facing Bayern or PSG now?
A really good manager would be able to address those issues mentioned with the squad at hand. Not Ole sorry.

What are you on mate? Can I have some of those please?
There is no way their tactics was cowardly. They dominated our midfield, passed through it like knife through a butter, created chances at a canter and could have been a spanking bar the heroics of David.
Thesame shite we played against Villa. Teams with far less quality are bossing us around, it tells to the quality of the manager in charge.

Looking at stats they weren't really dominating? You watched the wrong game mate. Expected goals are 1.23-2.72 to Villareal. They should have comfortably won the game and anyone who watched the game will agree. We were lucky but luck won't take us very far, certainly not far enough to win trophies. If you are fine with us being outplayed every other game, well good for you, enjoy. I am not fine with it because we should be doing a lot better with the squad we have.

I still have no idea what the formation was last night and frankly it doesn't matter. What I just noticed is how McTominay was left isolated in the middle of the park and that cannot happen as he cannot do that job by himself (whether it's defending or attacking).

I still have the same question as last night, was it tactical to have a setup like this or did Pogba decided to do these crazy high risks runs and presses on his own and as a result create massive holes in the middle ?

It looked like a cross of 4-3-3/4-1-4-1.

I think Pogba's role must have been tactical. We had the same midfield in the EL final against the same team but their overall positions were very different that night.

I feel the pressure has gotten to him and his decision making / tactics are simply not good enough.

Very poor performance again, lucky to win and writing is on the wall unfortunately. The sooner the better now though in my opinion as we saw at Chelsea how quickly a team can change when the right manager gets brought in

Just like Villa did, Wolves, Westham in league cup and many more?
Quite telling that the manager couldn't address this lapse that is obvious to an ordinary football fan.
The point is he is shite coach, doesnt matter which players are signed.

Despite the fact that I cheered like mad when Ronaldo scored, I woke up today feeling pretty pissed off at the performance.

We played a football game with a non existent midfield ffs. I don't know how Ole can justify that.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
Ole know players especially Ronaldo at his age couldn't play a 90 mins pressing game, he let everything come late ( last 15 mins) until every players got tired, the front line start pressing and increase the tempo to get a winning goal, opponent will not have time to recover from the goal.

This is a great tactic. Ole still the man !!! Great win Great Ole.
Apart from we could/should have been 4 down by that point.
