Good to see everyone noticing what I've been enjoying for over a decade, all the while seeing imbeciles bring up youtubes of missed goals in games in which he had still scored a couple anyway.
He is an absolutely top, top player. It’s a damn shame he spent so many year in France. Would have loved him at our club for plenty of years. An instant favourite he is. So many great traits. Leadership, work rate, runs, finishing, headers, intelligent and reading of the game.

He's an absolute class player. I never believed the mockery of him on this forum. They're all chewing on their words now.

I never understood why Mourinho never went for him when links came up. Couldn't work out how he didn't just outright adore him.

My consolation is he didn't get him while back at Chelsea either, would have been the best striker in the PL for the last 5 years or so. By a distance.

He needs to play, he needs to start.

Also I see Telles and Dalot more wingbacks than fullbacks.
So…
We should play 3-5-2 when Maguire still injured and Shaw is back

—————-—-De Gea
——Lindelof—Varane—Shaw
Dalot—Pogba—Fred—Bruno—Telles
————Ronaldo—-Cavani

I agree Cavani needs to play more but I don't want to see the rest of what's going on in this post.

Bruh, fatigue isn't linear. If for one sequence you are tired, a few seconds later you can still make an acceleration
C'mon, it wasn't fatigue. He just chose not to chase down what he presumed to be a lost cause. Suddenly his legs were there when Cavani got the ball.

Could Cavani play on the right? Assuming Ronaldo has to start every single big game () a front three of Rashford, Ronaldo, Cavani could be decent.
To be honest I think it could work, not sure why some have Ronaldo as a winger and Edi as the 9, that would never happen.

Edi showed last night he has the energy and I’m sure he could do 60 mins there.

60 mins of Cavani and Ronaldo on the pitch is good. I think it’s vital we get Cavani on the pitch as much as possible tbh.

I'd say it's simply because Cavani is a better #9 and focal point for the attack.

Ronnie roams around a fair bit and precisely the issue in the last few games was rival defences didn't have to watch their backs for movement in the box, they just lined up as a concrete wall against a bunch of players trying to shoot from mid/long range. The exception being, whenever CR gets behind them, then duly goes down under any sort of contact and gets no pen (I only think one of the 4-5 actually was one, lying shepherd and all that).

He would get stranded out wide. Could have worked with Trippier, not AWB. Dalot is a bit shit so nothing should be predicated on him starting. Don't see how that upgrades on Greenwood/Sancho.

With Shaw/Telles providing decent width on the left I'd go Ronaldo-Cavani-Greenwood/Sancho/Lingard, allowing Cristiano to regularly tuck in as a second striker.

In midfield we really have to try VdB and Matic (I can't see VdB working well with either of McFred right now).

Leaves out Pogba, who clearly isn't a fecking midfielder for a CM pair and keeps getting shoe-horned in ways that brings our balance completely out of kilter. I have a lot of time for his quality, but we can only really exploit it as LF. That only anticipates the issue once Rashford is back, as he absolutely should start on the left.

My gut is we won't sacrifice Pogba now, nor Rashford later, so there's just a single spot for CR/Cavani and he will just be used as supersub. So long as it works like yesterday and we don't run out of time, that will do.

None of us can know what it was for sure. I'm just saying it's possible he didn't fancy wasting the energy to chase after that ball.

Anyone saw how he was telling Ronaldo off after he didn't find him near the end of the game?

One of the few in the squad or maybe the only one who has the character to do so.

Yep saw that. Good on Cavani. Maybe Greenwood would do it later as well as he doesn’t feel he has to pass him the ball every single time. Neither does he feel star struck by Ronaldo‘s arrival unlike others.

Others run and celebrate with him and feel like they are just there to pass the ball to him, not Greenwood. Yesterday again after the final whistle he shook Ronaldo‘s hand like he was a nobody

Yeah I saw that too he didn't even smile back to Ronnie. Maybe it's just nothing but in case it is I understand how he feel and tbf I can't say he's wrong. That probably also explain why he was unusually so selfish against Villa.

I believe he hasn’t scored since Ronaldo‘s arrival. Can see why he might be feeling the pressure. He should take it easy, his goals will come again soon enough.

It's not the pressure I think. No one expect him to score every match, he's only 19 yo. But imo he may feel a bit unfair that Ronnie has the privilege to basically do nothing defensively. Why? because Ronnie scores goals. In fact no striker or attacking player likes to do the dirty work, that work is called dirty for a reason. He may think if he scores goals he could be exempted from that too.

I didn't see that but watching us vs Villa Mason was delivering the same single-minded (aka selfish) performance we saw in Cavani's first few games. After some time on the bench he seemed to appreciate his game better and they got on like a house on fire.

Maybe he needs the same now, except I'm not convinced you would get the same outcome. It's not like Cavani demanded he played for him, he just kept telling him to keep his head up and anticipate movement and watching him play from the stands he likely clocked on the fact he had a point and it would make him a better player.

Benched for not passing to Ronaldo doesn't have the same ring to it. Handle with care.

You're suggesting we should bench Mason? And because?

Tbh I don't remember Cavani was that selfish or ever refused to do the dirty work?

Can't says he wrong about what? Are you suggested he has lingering hard feelings against Ronaldo, feelings which emboldened him to be ridiculously selfish against Villa? And if that were the case, you think he would be justified in having those feelings?

I'm saying last year when Cavani started his first few games Mason served up the same dross he is serving now and kept running into blind alleys or shooting into sure blocks instead of passing. One of the CL games was particularly bad, think it was Leipzig.

He ended up benched (for whatever reason, an obvious one being poor form) and thereafter he didn't just link up well with Cavani but actually replicated some of his good work when not on the pitch.

IF what some here are saying is right (him not responding well to Ronaldo, for whatever reason) we need that changing and that change has to come from Mason. Maybe one way is bench, but I find that really tricky/risky. I think Cavani as #9 would give him a great opportunity to go back to his best game and drop this individual running solo against a brickwall stuff he is doing.

That discussion belongs in the Greenwood performance thread, mind.

If Mason is thinking that way (and I seriously doubt he is,) then I'd be worried about his long-term future at this team. However, I think you've just manufactured some weird grievance against Ronaldo and are using Greenwood as a proxy for it.

Haven't seen much mention of this but Cavani's movement is the best in the club, better than Ronaldo. Ronaldo comes alive in the box but overall Cavani is amazing with his movement as a no 9 all over the pitch. Even in that I think his work rate outshines all the others.

You can search my posting history to see if I have any grievance against Ronnie.

For the ones who think Ronnie is the goat then for them it's naturally that he's grant the privilege to do basically nothing defensively. But not everyone worship him. So imo I can't say Greenwood is wrong for thinking if he scores goals he could get that privilege too.

It's like you work with a teammate that has a privilege of doing only what he feel like. Because he's really good at something. While you have to do things you don't like. Is it wrong for you to think if you're as good at that thing as your teammate you'd get to do what you like too? I can't say that's wrong.

Anyway, as I said this is purely hypothetical. Just in case it is.

You would think that Ronaldo with his muscular body would have more presence than Cavani, but it's Cavani the one that has the body presence and don't let defenders bully him. Maybe it was the extra amount of energy he had.

Imo it was not because him being selfish but rather because he's been found out. I still remember teams putting more defenders to block his shooting angle and he's basically nullified.

This season he's been much more matured and completed as a footballer. His game as well. I don't think the reason behind that is because he was benched but just his natural development. You could check his performance thread I think there's some posts in that thread regarding this.

Maybe it was him being found out then, it can't be that now though, surely.

I just know he really improved in the second half of last season (yes, after that bench time, I don't credit it with any impact other than a bit of a shakedown and reflection time). Cavani clearly was a factor as you could see him guiding him, gesturing and Greenwood paying attention.

Last few games he has gone back to his form one year ago and, personally, I would like to see Cavani as #9 and observe the effect on Mason. I would expect him (and our attack) to get back to his best.

Think you are looking too hard at the goals assists tab. Greenwood should have had two assists last night, one of which was the pass of the entire match. Against Villa the whole team was garbage and yet he still created pretty much every chance we had. Talk of dropping him is absolute madness, he's arguably been our best player this season at 19!
