Yes maybe Lindelof could have done better but you can see the anti-lindelof agenda when barely a couple of people in this thread or the Varane thread, mention how it all started because Varane decided to chase a ball way into the midfield and got caught out of position.
Lindelof has his faults but he definitely gets held to a much higher standard than Maguire and Varane.
It's madness truly. Sadly it looks like Sancho is next in line as favourite punching bag.

The goal was not his fault. Watch it again. The Danish commentators said it: he stops and actually has the goalscorer offside but Telles keeps him onside.
Wouldn't say goal was his fault but he didn't have anyone offside, ball was ahead of defenders and attackers, so no way attacker would have been offside even if Telles was in line with Lindelof.

Credit where credit is due. I have often been accused of having an anti-Lindelof agenda on this forum but last night he didn't put a foot wrong, unlike Varane who uncharacteristically looked a bit nervous throughout.

Think he was talking about the phase before. When the ball was played through Lindelof had slowed to play offside, but Dalot was coming out of line with the rest of the defenders.

Fair enough if that's what he meant, but he said goal scorer. He was always onside.

Not the goalscorer, but the player who made the assist I think you mean. Linedlof and Dalot held the line, and Telles played him on

Apart from the goal he was kept up the good form looked better than Maguire has done recently anyway.

Speaking of panned Maguire for doing the same in the past but I really can’t work out why Lindelof isn’t trying to block that ball across. It’s like he has stopped. Is he expecting a cut back or something. Just seems like to me he could have cut that out.

On Varane though must be learning from Maguire what he was doing going way out there no idea.

The hate-Lindelof crew has arrived! :)

The goal analysed:
1. Varane is caught way up the pitch trying to win the ball (far north of both pogba and Mact).
2. VR plays the ball inte acres of empty space between CDM and defence (same problem every game)
3. VR can for the 100th time turn and charge with four men at United.
4. Dalot misses his tackle and fails to stop the cross in. (Hope dalot gets a new chance and does better!)
5. Telles who is covering for Varane doesnt quite manage to follow Alcacer - Alcacer is his man - who blindsides Lindelof.
6. Lindelof slows his pace slightly (maybe he sees he cant reach the ball, maybe he tries to play alcacer offside, maybe he doesnt know he is there, maybe he assumes its telles man, maybe he expects de gea to own the 6 yard box).

so summary, Lindelof could - at the end of a chain of mistakes - have kept running at full speed and maybe it would have changed something, but maybe not.
To blame for the goal? Hardly!

It's no fecking anti Lindelof agenda, Varane made a mistake defending aggressively and on the front foot like he was defending all night and did 80% of the defending because of that, for the goal he made a bad call and his defensive teammates should have covered, and they had a chance to do so, firstly Dalot, then Lindelof. If we measured both Lindelof and Varane by the same standards, Victor was a passenger who contributed feck all to the game while Varane was everywhere, but we are not, because everybody knows what you get from Lindelof and what you don't.

Just seen a replay of the Villareal goal. Why the feck is he jogging back into the box and not trying to be in position for the ball in
this happens every darn time. so frustrating.
it almost feels like he gives up. he lacks the killer instinct and desire to get himself between the ball and the attacker

how is this even a discussion after the XYth conceded goal in the exact same manner with him in the side?

Its not Lindelofs man! Its Telles man coming up behind his back at full speed!

With your logic, why didnt DDG come out and claim it? He could have, but was passive!

Lindelof is defending the front post. His job in that situation is to block any crosses coming into the box.

Unfortunately he hesitates and then misses it by a small margin. It's not his fault alone as pretty much all of the defenders make errors in that sequence, but the best defenders get their positioning correct and cut that cross out no problem.

Even the best defenders make mistakes. They'd clear that most of the time, however.

Good summary. Could also mention our entire midfield missing in action. Not one of them within 20 yards of any of the Villareal players.

Of course, unfortunately the errors are too often with Lindelof.

It's not like he's miles behind the play and struggling to catch up into position, he's literally standing in the right place.

Maybe he suspects Alcacer is going to cut back and that's what causes him to hesitate, but you really just need to commit to defending the near post and make it difficult for the crosser.

Anyway, lots of things could have stopped the goal before that point. There's far more simple things throughout the game I didn't like. (mainly leaving Dalot out to dry)

Varane just ran up the pitch leaving the defence and Dalot misses cutting out the pass but Lindelof gets the blame.

It never is Lindelof's man, it's not his man because he can't win a header, it's not his man because he should not tackle or he will make a penalty, what the hell does he actually contribute when playing is the question?

He had Danjuma's number anyway.

Watching it again I think Telles should be communicating much better. He could have told Lindelof the man was behind him and he can adjust his position then. Telles looks like he’s halfway between committing to Alcacer or his winger behind him and as such doesn’t really do either. Telles can see the whole line there and should be organising.

If Lindelof is trying to cover Dalot there, he’s got to get aligned with the cross.

Do you mean that Lindelof didnt win his headers, didnt tackle, made a penalty and did not contribute? Or are you just trying to justify your dislike of him with big empty words?
He had a pretty good game in a team without a midfield.

More like Danjuma's had his own number, he is also a very tidy player but no end product. If he was any good in his finishing he would have punished us against Dalot and Lindelof.
Except Danjuma never really troubled Lindelof and was easily tackled twice.

Nobody apart from Varane in that 4 men defense had a "good" game, and Varane also made a brain fart which would have easily cost us, and also made a mistake for the goal. Villareal were tearing us apart and only DDG stopped them going 3:0 at half time. My dislike for him, just like for Dalot and Telles is because ultimately he is not good enough and it showed once again in this match. Then you have chaps like you who have no fecking idea what a good game by a CB is, overrating an average display.

Which came from beating Dalot as far as I recall.
Well yes wingers tend to beat the full back first then proceed against a CB. There were 2 occasions when he took dangerous shots, one of which Lindelof was 3 meters behind Dalot while the winger took a direct hit from very much the CB's position, another one in which Lindelof tried to block but we had to resort to a DDG wonder save and then there was that free fecking header in front of Lindelof while he had no idea what is happening behind him, of course it came from a cross from the same winger. Hardly had him in his pocket or anything.

So what you're saying is that your disappointed that he didn't do Dalot's job as well as his own?

Video

Scroll down to 2.36 into the video, did he do his own job as well as Dalot did his there? Yeah he absolutely did. Almost identical as the goal actually.

Missed that header in first half but still best United player on field. Dealt with hairy situation with grey X3, class! Everyone calling for front foot defending and getting done for... that's how you do it properly.

MOTM for me by some distance. Maguire should have a challenge in winning his spot back but we all know he'll be straight back in.
