Newcastle United now owned by the PIF | PL receives "legally binding assurances that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will not control NUFC" ;)

The whole statement is poorly written. Which is quite a feat considering how brief it is. The first bit takes the cake of course
I didn’t even read it after. It’s laughable. @sullydnl mentioned that they’re snivelling cnuts and I just knew. Good luck to them. I have nothing against toon. Just the way they abused that widow and the pandering is fecking sickening. I’d have respected them more if they said — feck your human rights, we haven’t won feck all in 70 years. Our North East area will see significant investment, so why should I care about geopolitical issues? I’d have respected that.

Sorry for no formatting. Im out and im pissed.

Khashoggi's fiancee: 'I ask fans to stand with me'

Poor women, "stand with you", nope, I'm afraid they are on the streets cheering the inevitability of "success" instead.
Can't help but think that what media does is something like below

Sky: Hello!! Am I speaking to fiancee of the murdered journalist who was chopped up by MBS? I would like a comment on MBS buying a football club.

It is so sad and shameful

Sky: We understand your pain. Ohh the horror!! Ohh!! Can't hold back our tears.

Well not just any Muslim owner, but the House of Saud, who have literally made a concerted effort to promote and export their religion around the world.

It's could also be a form of trying to legitimise the regime by being associated with moderate Muslims.

It happens with other owners too. Why does Athletic Club only employ Basque players?
Because Bilbao is a Basque country while Newcastle has nothing to do with any majority muslim nation?

If Saudi's bought us, I think you'd be surprised.
If it's some random oligarch without the heinous backstory they bring, why not.
You won't find an oligarch who hasn't done bad things, either directly or indirectly.

Am I missing something or is the "they're not owned by KSA but PIF" line just the same as me saying Chelsea isn't owned by Roman Abramovic but Fordstam Limited (the name of Roman's firm in the UK)?

In that it's technically true but ultimately not really worth mentioning?

Klopp won't be at Liverpool forever and we consistently outspend them. We're the fourth richest team in the league.
Are we? I seen the premier leagues rich list earlier after the Newcastle takeover and we was somewhere like 9th

Urgh. All the Newcastle fans absolutely buzzing. Guess it doesn't matter when it's your club joining the farce.
They were in the unique position of having had the worst owner in the league as far as any sort of ambition goes. I do wonder however if it would have been equally welcomed regardless of club. If it was to happen for us I would hope for a much bigger backlash.

Last league title was 1926/27.
Last FA Cup was 1954.

How are Newcastle fans so entitled? Deserve it? Deserve what? You're not a sleeping giant. This isn't and restoration project of a major giant of a by-gone era; it's the takeover of a club that has fans that somehow convinced themselves and other fans that title challenging is the historical norm for them.
Big stadium, good attendance. That's it.

Of course Newcastle has nothing to do with any Muslim nation. I never said that. We're talking about the ownership, and they do. The reason they're pumping money into a premier League football team is to try and legitimise themselves on the world stage.

Bilbao does it to push out the Basque culture, which KSA is trying to do here. I guarantee they'll be flooding the prem coverage with adverts. I'm not suggesting they'd only ever sign Muslim players, just they would probably love to go for top players who are Muslim, to enhance that public perception of the Kingdom.

Edit: I did just read your original post I quoted and think I over looked the "only". Apologies.

I get that.
What I just meant that every time MBS or PIF does something big, media would want a sound bite from her. So they would keep hounding her.

As long as they own/control the holiest site of Islam, they need not worry about good PR in the Muslim world. People would keep flocking regardless.

On the planet too, once they start signing the likes of Haaland Neymar etc..
Soon little kids around the world will grow up dreaming of one day getting to visit the city of Newcastle.

Don't think we need to wait for new kids to grow up. The players joining this Jan would already be saying I used to look at Shearer videos and wonder how nice it would be to play there.

What exactly is to stop the Saudi state having a large say on the direction of travel? Assurances don't mean much, these people have more money and influence than God. It is not hard to imagine the rules being circumvented. What do you do, fine them?

Sounds like a pointless bit of fluff.

Oh I'm of no illusions the majority would be happy, that was evident when the Saudis were rumoured to be interested in us - loads of posters essentially saying 'I know it is bad but it doesn't affect me so why should I care' but then, given we have so many supporters, there was also a lot of push back against that. When push comes to shove I guess most just want to watch football.

Newcastle are a special case because they've had 15 years of essentially tyranny - they are desperate and maybe we will be in the future as well. I can honestly say I would stop watching us because the club would have become something new and different. FC United would likely see a surge in spectators, that's for sure!
Yea you've got a point, city and Newcastle pre evil investment are a completely different situation to current United.

That's how it reads to me too. As far as I am aware, the PIF is 100% controlled by the royal family, and one of the "excellences" are a chairman at the club?

Oh I'm not saying they're trying to promote Islam, I'm saying they'd be using their association with well known Muslims in the sporting world, to advance the view in the wider world of the Saudi Kingdom.

its gonna be way harder to do a City in this market

back when City started they bought bunch of players for around £20/£30m that would be more like £70/£80m buys these days

and City had a load of flops before they got it right
They can sign Mbappe, Pogba and Lingard for ZERO in a few months.

Haaland for £75m

And that's just the start

we're not. it's a cheap stereotype made by people who get their football opinions aerosol-sprayed into their ears by lazy pundits. You couldn't find 10 toon fans genuinely saying we deserve to be top 4 if your life depended on it. I mean, maybe around the time Keegan's first time and the great Sir Bobby Robson. Maybe. I'll give you that. But over the last 15 years or so? Nah. Not even close. Ashley sucked the soul out of the club. We just want to be competitive. Every fan deserves a team that tries.

Unless you were mad over some bog standard rah-rah-rah rally the fans cheerleading from an excited new owner? in which case, relax.
And so it begins.

Neither Mbappe, Haaland or Pogba would go to Newcastle just yet. Club needs to build some stature first. Same happened to City - the first players they got were usually decent rejects, but that's all. Eventually they got world class players but it took years. And with FFP it will be a little harder to do the same. Eventually they'll reach the top, there's no doubt about it, but it'll take a while.

Everyone who bashed the Super League has to think twice now. As disgusting as it is, it is the only way to salvage what's left of this sport. Newcastle won't be the last club taken over by rich criminals. I just don't get why you'd be happy. Make a Super League, make it based on the American system of the draft and salary cap in which every club will be able to compete and this sport would be for the better. UEFA, FIFA, the PL, they're all to corrupt to do anything about this.

You aren't missing anything. They are owned by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, of which MBS, Crown Prince of KSA, is the chairman.

For all intents and purposes, NUFC is owned and run by the Saudi state.
