I think it was intentional, as it was juxtaposed to the sterile and robotic nature of where they were. The guards were robotic, the surfaces and items were all sterile and lifeless looking. It added to the surreal nature of the show whilst being on the Island. And I think the extra emotion and overreaction was to counterbalance that.Or anyone half decent for that matter. It pretty much felt like watching a shonen jump anime which is intended for kids and characters are designed to overreact at everything. That point in the first episode where they ask the game to be stopped - I mean seriously, cmon!
Yeah, I've seen plenty of Korean stuff and the acting was definitely not bad in this one. I'd even argue that it's better than normal. The foreign actors are shite(especially the VIPs), but that is true for most Korean cinema/TV.
Squid Game actually has a lot of top class South Korean actors. The main character, the Front Man and the suited guy who plays that weird flip game in the train station, are all famous in South Korea(and many other Asian countries).

Finished this last night, thought it was pretty solid overall.
I think it's just what Solius is saying and none of that.
Either way pretty unwatchable for me.
Battle Royale is everything this isn't. It's still a decent watch in places but nothing special and the VIP's 100% ruin the show.
Liar game is great, I haven’t read it since it came out but I really enjoyed it.
I haven’t watched squid game but my foster sister has been ringing me up to go through the episodes, at first I was sure that I’d read the manga it was based on but then it ended up being completely different, and I found the show wasn’t an adaptation of any previous work.
Dunno if you know the manga I’m on about but I remember it being bloody and mental, and had the whole death games thing going on.
Or Korean Snake Jailbird.One minor episode point- the set the North Korean woman up as a spy, with her climbing around the vents, then just ditched that line.

Just finished it. Really strong start but the VIP nonsense ruined it. I also lost interest around episode 6 or 7. The last episode dragged.

Just watched episode 7. Did anybody else find the VIPs really bad actors? They were jarring in what was another really good episode.

Yeah they were terrible. They sounded as if they had dubbed actors. The writing was poor for them too.

Presuming they’re going for a second season, which I think will be interesting enough to give a go, though probably won’t be as good.

No. But then again, most films/shows off this genre aren't in my opinion.
Just finished this. I echo the sentiments here: started off really well but the addition of the VIPs made the quality fall off a cliff.

So is the old man the owner of the game/ main boss? He risked his whole life so he wouldn’t feel left out?
What happened to the copper? The way he was shot makes it seem as if he might have survived. Did the police get the pictures/ videos?

That book is great, I'd recommend it.
The old man was genuinely dying from the tumor. In that sense he wasn't really risking his life. There's also some disagreement among fans on whether or not his life was in actual danger. There's plenty of hints that suggest that he wasn't. But at the end of the day he just wanted to take part in a game he had watched many times before.
As for the rest of your questions: I reckon they will be answered in the next season. A new season hasn't been confirmed yet, but based on the ending it's clear that the story isn't finished.

Enjoyed it. Lots of predictable stuff happened throughout mind. The marbles episode I managed to predict a lot of, although the episode was still great and probably going to take a while to recover after that!

My initial line of thinking with the old man being number 1 was either that he was involved with the game somehow, or something along the lines that he has played the game before
Some of the games were set-up in ways he would not die:
• Red Light, Green light - the motion detector did not pick up his (or anyone close to him) movement, to avoid him getting shot
• Tug of war - he is not chained to the rope, so if they were to lose he would avoid falling (good luck explaining that one buddy!)
•With the honeycomb game, he chose the easiest shape remaining, but they have just avoided killing him if he did snap the shape (who is going to question it!)

Wouldn't his life be in danger once they start killing each other at night? Be really easy to take him out, and there's not much control over that.
Possibly - but I don’t think the others viewed him as a threat to eventually winning, so I don’t think he was in much (if any) danger.
If you're going on a mad killing spree riot to thin the herd though, you wouldn't be concerned about who gets it once you get going. Specially as it was really dark.
Totally, the VIPs are horribly bad. Wooden dialogue, cringe-worthily delivered.
Actually thought that the twist at the end would be that the old man confesses to inventing BitCoin
Not surprising given the show was made for a Korean audience. They have to hit the American stereotype and keep the English as basic as possible

I liked the series as a whole but have some complaints regarding the games.
The show was a fun watch but wouldn't rate it as an all time classic.
This was supposed to be an equal opportunity game since outside the world is unfair and unbalanced.
So the tug of war game shouldn't have been played as it immediately puts women and older men at a disadvantage. If the game runners wanted it to be fair maybe they should have selected the teams themselves.
Game number 5 is just incredibly stupid. It's a sure shot death game and if not for the glass expert none of the contestants would have survived. I expected more use of logic and mental strength rather then going in with a probability of surviving close to zero especially for the first few contestants. Also when someone finally figured out the trick they switch off the light which is just plain cruel and unfair again.
I didn't like the fact that they allowed people to kill each other in between the games, especially provoking the first fight by food shortages. In a place that's supposed to be about equal chance you can't have physically weak men and women fighting up against the stronger men. They should have probably had a rule that you cannot touch each other during the duration of the entire game.
Also would have liked some kind of background on the front man. Would have been interesting to watch his story as to what made him join the organisation team.
The fact that there was a impostor working as a soldier and not caught despite there being a camera in the room was also surprising.
