It's highly unfortunate that footballers are almost entirely immune to the consequences of their actions.

Southgate: what if you're 'on the wrong side' of vaccination programme

Gareth Southgate has admitted that he won't speak out further on the Covid-19 vaccine, while expressing his sympathy for players who choose not to get vaccinated.

"I think within the age group and age range (of the England squad) - I don't have all the data and statistics - but you can understand. I would sense that younger people are at a different scale in terms of uptake to older people generally."

"It's a personal choice, and it's hard to blame anyone. Players live a lot of their lives on social media where a lot of different theories are abound. I have a lot of sympathy for that."

"Look, who knows, I could be sitting here in five years' time and have been wrong. With some of the other issues (surrounding racism) it's been very clear what's right and what's wrong. I've been willing to speak about that, but could I 100 per-cent say that the vaccination programme is safe? Well, I couldn't. I'm not a chemist and I'm not a doctor and I'm not a scientist."

"I would imagine we wouldn't be in the position we are in giving a mass vaccination programme without research having happened and without governments and medical people being sure, so I am comfortable in taking that risk personally."

"But I recognise that others might feel less comfortable and have some anxiety. That's why it's more complicated."

"If you're receiving messages when you support the programme that say 'You could be up in front of a Nuremberg type trial in 10 years' it does make you think twice about speaking out, because what if you are on the wrong side? At the moment I couldn't be sure I am on the right side."

"I am comfortable that I've had the vaccine. I'm comfortable that I think it was the right thing to do a video for the NHS. But I also recognise that others might not be so keen to put themselves in that situation."

"With racism it's different. They are absolutely clear. They know what they have lived through and experienced as a team."

"Ultimately we're here to play football. The players are here to play football. We can't really have much impact over the next two or three days - we certainly can't jab everybody over the next two or three days."

After being vaccinated I fully sympthatise with those footballers (or people in general) who don't want it. Pity you can't reverse that shit.

They should be banned from playing. No vaccine no playing. All staff and all spectators too.

I’m confused, are you saying you would want to reverse your vaccine?

Heart problems, veins pain, utter sleepiness. Old man's the same as do plenty of my mates who took it. It's generally speaking shite and I do regret taking it greatly.

Does it? Really? Some randomer says you could end up in a Nuremberg trial and that makes you question yourself?

It's football management that he should be questioning himself about.

I did. She said she won't even check for covid as I'm safe being vaccinated. Cheers anyway mate.
No doctor is that stupid surely? It’s not a 100% protection from COVID. Go and see a different one.

I know well over 100 people who have had the vaccine and none have had any negative side effects beyond a couple of days after.

EDIT: still got covid done privately and was positive. Was rough for a. 32.y.o sporty guy but it's finished now. That just confirmed my feeling towards the 'vaccines'.
So you've probably got long covid but you are instead going to blame it on vaccine side effects?

Your messages don't make any sense, first you blame the vaccine for your symptoms, then you test positive to covid and say it confirms your feelings (that were wrong in the first place). But yet you obviously don't know when you caught COVID, was it 2 weeks after your 2nd shot?

Science is not "feelings", your feelings are worth nothing to assess the efficiency of the vaccine. If you want to take a look, there's a General Forum thread featuring a lot of people with feelings towards vaccines. It's called Covidiots. Spoiler : a lot of them are dead or in the ICU.

One of the big battles is peoples anecdotal evidence versus wider data. We all have this problem, its normal to apply responses and beliefs around ones own situation. The harder picture for many to get their heads around is the tools being used to deal with this pandemic basically rely on the concept of what we do is for the benefit of others and not ourselves. The more people vaccinated, the more people using masks, the more we can social distance the faster the pandemic is brought under control and the faster the need for these measures can be eased.
Also the probability and statistical understanding of risk, causality and incidence measurement can confuse many.
Add in confirmation bias habits and the end result is sizeable numbers of people with poorly informed opinions and opinions based around casual information and lazy understanding.

So, just to clear things up, you could literally have the “long covid” that @0le mentioned… but you would just rather blame the vaccine because of your preconceived notions.

Edited to make clear: I’m making a statement there, not asking you a question.

I mean, the fact that he wrote "vaccines" with quote marks kinda tells everything we need to know...

I'd say he loves stirring up controversy and moves from thread to thread doing it.

The outrage at few footballers not being vaccinated yet everone was crying to bring the crowd back. Vaccinated or not, 50k plus crowds are surely spreading the virus more effectively than the players.

Some countries have limitations on number who can attend and in a lot of countries they still wear masks at games.

My country asks for a EU vaccination passport, a proof of having recovered from COVID or a negative PCR test from the last 48 hours for all public events, including football. No limits on the numbers. That also, of course, is a sign of discrimination for some. So some basically just don't want to get vaccinated, don't want to get tested and don't want to prove you're not dangerous for others. Some just want to feel special I guess. The same people are also often the first to disregard actual discrimination and downplay it as "PC gone too far".
