I can't understand how anyone can watch asian movies with dubs, there's so much emotion in the dialogue, especially in korean shows.

With English subtitles
Thats hardly any better though. Watching it in Korean would be the real thing. I read that
when Ali was calling out for Sang woo, he was using a term of endearment, meaning elder brother
Understanding that would've been something, otherwise there's hardly any difference between dubbing and subtitles.

Yeah there are a lot of terms in eastern languages that have no translation in English. They end up using 'sir' or 'big brother' etc which takes away the whole thing. Have observed the same for Japanese and Indian languages.

I'm thinking about Old Boy and how much dubbing would've ruined that film. The American remake would've probably been better, if that's even possible.

Yeah but that's Oldboy, this is Squid Game.
Ok I'm thinking about Squid Game and how much dubbing ruined that film TV show. The American remake starring Steve Carell as Kang Sae-byeok would've probably been better, if that's even possible.

I'd agree if the show was a good one. For this it should be fine.
I normally find subs fine but my wife wears glasses and has a job that means she is staring at a screen all day.

So when we watch stuff in there evening, with the lights dimmed, she refuses to put on glasses and read the screen.

So now we watch dub :(

Can you ever forgive me?

The Emperor's New Clothes.

It's an okay show. Nothing more. What's crazy is that we've now got real-world restaurants around here selling the sugar honeycomb challenge (game 2) and others posting Facebook adverts with the circle, square and triangle to jump on the bandwagon.

This show definitely isn't doing anything groundbreaking enough to become such a phenomenon. But I guess I'm as guilty as everyone else of falling for the hype. I watched it just to avoid being left out of the conversation.

It's a great example of a social media bandwagon. It's nothing new but I guess the children's games make it more fun. And the aesthetics are a bit attractive as well. Guess the fad will go on for a couple of weeks then fall off a cliff.

You are spending alot of time in this thread to slag it off. Bit odd.

How can subtitles distract you in a Korean movie? Do you speak Korean?!

If anything, subtitles stop you getting distracted. You’re forced to pay attention to what’s happening on the screen because if you dick about on your phone you might miss something important.
Watching Gomorrah with subs at the mo, and it's brilliant. But you send a couple messages to someone and you've got to rewind 2 mins.

And what was up with using the word 'darn'? I suspect he was saying something stronger than that. Does anyone even use that stupid word outside of pre-watershed American TV?

Good Show though. Nothing really groundbreaking but it was very entertaining.

Talk about misinterpreting the ending

I really doubt that the protagonist turned around because he wants to play the game again. Surely he's just pissed and wants to take the hosts down?

I just don't understand why I would want to listen in Korean and read in English, when I can just listen in English?

Unless I'm missing something that's a million times easier and less distracting from the show itself.
I think it makes the acting look/sound less authentic… the only person who the dubbing actually worked was 001

Predictions.

Gi-Hun is being groomed to replace 001.
1)Biggest hibt was when 001 gave him the 001 jacket and told him it was his and he should wear it to be respected

There are also hints that 001 is his dad, when Gi-Hun explains why he choose umbrella and his childhood, 001 gets noticeably upset. 001 seeks him out in the outside world in episode 2. The village in marble games is based on where 001 used to live, but Gi-Hon also says yeah I used to live in a place like that.

Finished the season

Loved it, certainly no phenomenon but a fun watch

The first episode with the acting etc I was a little….hmmmm can I be arsed for this crap, but when you get passed that, it certainly draws you in with intrigue, it did me, where you want more

And actually I quite enjoyed it and ended up connecting with the characters.

Oh god yes absolutely

I could not listen to this in English, it looked and sound TERRIBLE

much better in Korean listening to the actual actors voices/tones in stead of the cringe American over voice, the acting is bad enough to then have terrible English American over voice on the actors

The subtitles were an easy manageable read and provided authenticity with the proper sound

Agree. Watched it to see what all the fuss was about. Reminded me of a lot of other things but it’s undeniably entertaining.

Caught the first episode of this yesterday. Decent enough entertainment, but does not seem exceptional in any way. One of those show where you seriously have to suspend your disbelief.

You get the sense that much of the hype is driven by this being a foreign language series. In that sense, it is similar to Casa de Papel, which was also average at best, but extremely hyped.

I think the whole “it’s about capitalism and evil billionaires ruining everyone ” that’s flying around online is completely wrong and the message is more nuanced.
I thought it's more about how people put money above everything and how the chase for it is detrimental to one's health.

Most people spend the majority of their lives chasing money and ignoring health and then when older, they spend all that money to try fix all the problems their body faces from the neglect of earlier

What’s the fact that it’s a foreign language series (in the UK and US) got to do with the price of bread? Is it not also popular in Korea? Bizarre comment.

Technically it would be foreign language anywhere but Korea, and I have no idea if it's popular there.

But really it's not that complicated. The fact that it's a Korean series adds to the hype because it makes it more unique and exotic. I am betting more people gave this series a watch because of that fact alone. Whenever I have had the series recommended it has been the first fact mentioned.

It really isn’t. The amount of people that completely avoid foreign films is probably quite high. The fact that it’s Netflix’s biggest ever show proves it’s bringing in every type of viewer. Not everyone likes to watch foreign things to seem cool.

It’s successful because it’s nicely presented, it has an interesting story and high risk to the characters. They’ve done very well to come up with good visuals that can be replicated and talked about too. The pink suits, green contestant outfits, red light green light girl, etc…

Also of course you have to suspend your belief, I’d say that’s for plenty of shows and kind of the point.
