They bought him one the year before.

Yes, another world class player to provide individual brilliance needed. So he can sit on his rear end. Not having another midfielder is not why we look so crap and disjointed.

Entirely his own fault.

If he wanted a midfielder so badly, why did he bring in a fourth goalkeeper, refuse to let VdB or Martial leave on loan, make promises to Lingard so he would turn down offers to stay at the club, and offer Mata a new contract for literally no reason?

Posted this in the Ole thread, but if I knew he wanted Sancho to play on the left mostly, I would have said: 'No, we should go for a CM instead, we have too many players on the left already"

£70 million would have got a pretty good CM.

I'm confused by the comments in this thread, are we now saying we didn't need a CM? Because I thought there was an overwhelming agreement that we did need a DM and it was naive not to buy one.

Understand it 100%. CM is a key area and we are paper thin there. None of our current options are top quality there and none of them are good at defending. Question is why it wasn´t a priority in the summer?

I'm sure Pep wishes he'd got a CF too. Ditto Tuchel with the CB they didn't get. And I doubt Klopp's dream summer consisted of one CB arriving.

They're still expected to make their teams work to a certain level regardless, because they're supposed to be top level managers who know how to set teams up to maximise their strengths and compensate for their weaknesses.

Wouldn't be a surprise, anyone should have been able to see how crucial a decent CM is to this team. But then why sign off on Sancho and Ronaldo instead who cost more.

They’re starting to throw each other under the bus, it’s only a matter of time now. I must say Ole has a cheek, how much did he spend on Amad, DVB and Pellistri??

I am pretty sure that the owners would have wanted a manager who can actually win a trophy but you don't always get what you want.

Of course we need one, but it's not like we need one to look like a competent team. Let alone fight for silverware.

Man, it’s like he’s the only manager ever who has had a problem like that. I swear there are times I think OGS is lazy by thinking he has a bottomless money pit and money makes problems go away, and to hell with doing some actual managing or coaching to show my worth.

He doesn't decide what players are bought and sold for.

Imagine him trying to win the EPL title with two nearly 40 year old players and Cleverley.

Utd and centre midfield signings are such a weird combination, its pretty much one unequivocal success in the 28 years since Roy Keane signed. I'm sure Rice (I assume its Rice) wouldve done alright, but then I thought Schneiderlin would

What about the £40m midfielder we just signed last year that Ole personally phoned to convince him to join that’s currently rotting on our bench unable to get a kick?

Of course we needed one. Same way Pep needed a striker, Tuchel needed a CB and Klopp needs a raft of players. But those managers are still expected to meet expectations regardless because they are top managers. Furthermore, one midfielder is not the difference between a team looking as poor as we are and fighting for titles.

This is the sort of thing that starts coming out when you lose the dressing room. Like Ole could have easily sold Matic/Donny/Lingard/Tuanzebe etc and bought a DM but we’ve hoarded players to such an extent that we have the biggest wage bill in the league again and look directionless. I think player power is a huge factor here this season. The players have stopped playing for every manager post Fergie and I want those players who stopped playing for Jose and Ole out now. I think his hands are tied though to an extent. Reckon Ronaldo was forced on him. We certainly look like we’ve no idea what to do with him anyway.

Well he's right, but I'm not sure he has anyone but himself to blame.

All our midfield options come from Jose's time at the club except VDB. We've been letting it rot to bring it more and more forwards so either Ole is blind or something is rotten further up.

Also this is literally the sort of stuff that was coming out from Jose in his final half season, complaints about not signing the defenders he wanted.

He has had 3 years to make signings, he wasted 40m on a midfielder he never uses, that is his fault.

He bought a RW but never uses him as RW.

Stop with the Excuses Ole.

He knew how stingy the Glazers are in the transfer market when he agreed to become manager. Can’t turned round and be shocked he hasn’t been backed financially now.

Does this make him toxic? Mourinho 'burned everything' and 'was toxic' for roughly the same reasons: bitching about having spent only 300m within 24 months. Ole spent another 100m more, so I guess even more toxic?

It seems that Varane, Sancho, Ronaldo and Heaton weren't enough for him and he needed to get more players in. We're really setting the guy to fail.
What, you think he's wrong, and that we don't need reinforcement at CM?

Yeah.

Also, besides some loose talk about Camavinga, did we even have anyone in our sights? Cant complain about lacking a CM when you didn't make a proper effort to bring one

Personally i am a big fan of Kessie and think he would have improved us immesurably without costing a fortune like Rice
