Easy to call it was just Pogba being dropped. Rashford is back on the left and Pogba is a liability in a two man midfield regardless of Ronaldo as he was playing left or left out last season.

We need a Carrick type and a more defensive mid to replace Fred and McTom. Sadly other combinations are probably worse. Pogba McTom Pogba Matic, I mean really is that what you want when you decry this selection?

Every match thread versus any opposition that isn't City, Liverpool or the like:

    "We'll win this one easily"

Followed up at full-time after a scratchy 1-0 by:

"Even when we win we don't win easily!"

    Repeat ad-infinitum.

What do you expect him to do then?

Change formation in a must-win UCL game?

Then he'll lose and you'd say that he should be sacked? At least now there's more defensive players than there is attackers.

Let's see how the game unfolds and watch the match and enjoy ourselves.
Yes, I do not give a feck if we lose this game at this point, so long as the manager shows that there is at least some progress, that he is learning, that we are trying to build something, no matter how long he takes. What is McFred gonna do? Win us the game? Like that has worked out very well this season and the season before that. Why not try Cavani with Ronaldo? Why not try Donny in midfield? Change the formation a little bit, spice things u Why does he persist with the same thing over and over again when it has proven time and time again it simply won't work.

Right, so Ole's something has to give basically meant dropping Pogba and nothing more. No balls at all.
I guarantee you'd be here complaining if he dropped Ronaldo as well. Something in all honestly I think he should have. This game has Cavani written all over it.

Other than disliking him no reason to drop him and not drop any of the other names who played at the weekend.....

Maguire at fault for nearly every goal.....

What and replace them with Bailly and Telles? Two vastly inferior players than Shaw/Maguire.

Next thing you'll do is agree with Fergie that you should "always play your best players"
Shaw and Maguire aren’t in form so yes they should have been dropped too - what’s the point of having a squad (Telles and Bailly) if we aren’t going to use them when players are out of form?

Typical same old, same old. Instead of trying for something new, be the same conservative scared of his own shadow coach you've always been. I just can't anymore with this manager. Fully resigned myself now. Don't care about winning or losing anymore, it doesn't exactly matter. This season is an absolute waste.
Don't watch then. Go do something else.

In fairness, it’s a decent lineup aside from McFred. Got pace, creativity and balance in there, just that the players providing the balance are not good enough. Ole did say something needs to give though, but I don’t actually know what gave. Pogba’s place?
It's a team devoid of any creativity and guile barring Fernandes ,our front three are all goal scores it's quite unbalanced and I don't think you can expect much from Mcfred in terms of creativity either .
But it's kind of a team which Solskjaer find himself most comfortable putting out basically not trying to lose and if our attackers can make something out scraps they are fed on it's a job well done for Ole.

That’s twice recently if I’d stuck with my original gut I would have gotten 11/1, But I chicken out last secound.

I think I will be knocked off my perch in the prediction league tonight

Also calling this season "a waste" after it's barely begun is a bit dramatic.
Only play one of Mctominay/Fred, with VdB. Drop Bruno (or Pogba) deeper and play more like a midfield 3. Maguire shouldn't be playing either after Saturday.

Instead, back to the same old crap and his favourites playing no matter what.

Guys, you have to realize that the duo McFred is pretty much undroppable under Ole, so it is always gonna be 4-2-3-1 with those two. I don't know why some you always seems surprised.

    4-2-3-1 with McFred.
It was a bit of a weird comment and hard to read what he actually meant but I thought he felt we’d been unlucky in recent weeks and at some point that luck would change and we’d get the rub of the green.

    Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
I’d have dropped Bruno and gone 4-3-3 if we insist on playing Ronaldo but having dropped Pogba you’ve got to think the creativity of Sancho ahead of Mason would offer more balance. Still - let’s smash them!

Man, so depressing when your manager doesn't have the balls to go head head against Atalanta.

With McFred we will just defend and hope someone does a worldie.

    Exactly this!

But with Ole and his clueless coaches it's no surprise really they've gone back to what they see is the safe option

Exactly. Or start Matic or Donny.

Am I the only one on the Caf buzzing for this game? It has been a long 4 days since Leicester, hoping tonight can make up for it.

implies there are gonna be changes, it's the same formation just with McFred for Pogba/Matic and Rashford for Sancho, which is just normal rotation you'd expect with a mid-week match coming before a big match

atalanta is gonna slice right though us

    The whole team was terrible.

Just like it has been in many games with McFred.

I suspect the difference is that was just the best opposition we had faced.

Fred's barely had a good game for us all season.

Essentially it's a managerial problem a this point as Evey pair we played has sucked at one point or another

the something that has to give will be Ole's job if he loses this one. Maguire was awful but he's the captain and always plays, that wont change outside of injury. Pogba being dropped makes sense unless Ole was going to stick him out wide, he needed to go with the midfield pairing that gave him the best work rate.

You could write that quote 40+ times when mentioning McFred though, at best we’ll get a mediocre performance they‘re the worst midfield pair regularly starting for United in 25 years.

Imagine chasing a right winger for 2 years and finally getting him for 70+ million then not getting the best out of him.

Good team. I'd probably have preferred to see Cavani but realistically that was never gonna happen. I think the rest is the strongest available.

You can absolutely fault him for that. McFred has been tested time and time again and it has failed utterly. Now I don't think it is entirely McFred's fault, we're coached terribly, but they're not the greatest of players that's for sure. And we have Donny who has given us the 2 best matches from a midfielder this season rotting on the bench. Why? Because Ole doesn't have the ball to be adventurous on anything, he is just as negative as ol' Moyesy boy.
Failed utterly? Really? Compared with every other central midfield partnership we’ve tried they’ve been by far the best pairing.

Right. He should keep doing what he did at the weekend against Leicester, that should see him keep his job.

    :houllier:
We lost against Villa at home with Scott and Fred starting so no it's hardly the solution regardless of what is gonna happen tonight.

At least we will defend. Our defense is absolutely atrocious. If you lean into the TV close enough, you can smell when the other team is about to score from a set piece on us... you sure as hell can feel it coming.
