4th place and last 16 would actually not be enough for me to support Ole going into another season - for me there has to be consistent progress and for the last 2 years there absolutely has been but that means this season we have to be in the mix for a title challenge, win the FA Cup or go deep in the CL

Ole is at the point now where things need to change immediately starting with the 2 home games this week - the matchgoing fans are patient and desperate to see Ole succeed but if we lose to the Scousers or City at home then the tide will start to turn
That's the word isn't it. By far the most disappointing thing about Ole's reign is the deep troughs we have fallen into after every good run of form and the manner of the defeats late in cup competitions. I see no signs that Ole will be able to get us competing consistently for major honours and crucially playing good progressive football more times than not. For that reason I'd like this season to be his last as United manager (barring a miraculous turnaround this year, which would be fantastic).

I saw in the podcast thread you don't want to argue the hypotheticals of last season: 'What if Liverpool didn't have injuries? What if Chelsea had started the season with Tuchel? etc. which is fair enough, but I think the fact remains Ole will find it harder to show progress this year than he did last year, given the lie of the land at rival clubs plus the fact Ole did progress us last year in terms of league finish. The Covid fixture pile-up aside this season looks to be a tougher ask for Ole, as it would be for anyone, and so far it's not looking like he's up for the challenge. As we've all said this run up to mid December is make or break.

Yes absolutely agree that this run is make or break - starting with tonight

The thread title says end of season but if Ole doesnt get an immediate response to the poor form so far then it obviously wont be that long, but he's earned the right with great work past 2 seasons to get things back on track and find the right mix with the strong squad he has built

Pretty fair. For me if [insert world class manager] was ready to come in tomorrow to start implementing shithot ideas I'd be tempted to thank Ole for the work he's done and get the new guy in asap, as it's less about what Ole deserves and more about what's best for the club at the end of the day. That said you could argue getting a new guy in late October isn't the best thing to do anyway, and that towards the end of a dead season is when you should look to make changes so the new guy can start assessing the squad without the pressure to perform instantly.

Nope get rid immediately. The problems are much deeper than a run of form. Ole simply doesn't have the tactical aptitude to make us competitive for the big prizes and he's not going to magic it up between now and the end of the season.

Did you guys hear Scholes saying the formation is the problem at HT? Anything to protect his mate. Disgraceful stuff really.

Wants Ole to be given the season but is also absolutely miserable about the win tonight because we should have lost 6-3

Plain weird. Tying himself in knots so as not to criticise his mate but unable to at least credit the spirit shown in the second half.

Can tell he played under Fergie…..

I expect a load of people will slag him off but anyone who’s watched any documentary/ programme on Fergie, Keane etc would find Scholes reaction perfectly normal.

If this were a manager with no previous connection to the club he’d be getting torn to shreds by every single ex player. Scholes and Neville are frankly taking the piss out of us fans now.
Agree.
I’m confused on he thinks is to blame ?

Really surprised by his reaction, he's so miserable and in all honesty he's not wrong, we will get ripped apart playing like against anyone decent.

Exactly this.

They’re all pissing on our heads & saying it’s raining. Neville has gone from demanding we get only ‘best in class’ in every department to refusing to address the fact our manager certainly isn’t that. I can’t even listen to Scholes.

Embarrassingly negative after that second half. He was more upbeat half time ffs
Yeah that was weird. Pretty bullish and he thinks it was 50/50 if we go on to win it at 0-2 down and then miserable as sin when we do.

He’s not wrong and we will probably get ripped apart at the weekend, but you have to enjoy moments like that winning goal, otherwise what’s the point. Tonight isn’t the time to be negative, enjoy the moment.

He was gutted we won, no doubt in my mind. He was livid we won.

I think he will be a tad embarrassed watching that back.

I agree, that second-half is great even if papers over the cracks. But Scholes is a born winner and has high standards, guessing that's where his reaction comes from.

It is very odd though, considering he has been defending Ole and this is a big win for him. Thought Scholes would paint it that way.

Nice to see a United pundit with a bit of realism. Even if it had to be the least erudite of all of them.

He’s painful tonight

He’s said it once there’s no need to be bringing it up again 10 minutes later.

He sounds like he had a speech prepped at 2-0

Find it strange fans seem to revel in wanting folks to just keep hammering the manager no matter what results......................"please Neville call for him to be sacked", "stop backing your mates..........."

Strange mind set and I'll never understand it

I think he's just given up. Usually he's upbeat/spins the positives and adds in something like 'we made it harder than we should' but tonight he just told it with no frills.

He's absolutely spot on.
Finally someone not getting carried away by the comeback. Not talking about 'emotions', 'team spirit' and a bunch of cliché rubbish like Rio does.
I don't get some of the opinions on here criticizing Scholesy. Go watch MUTV if you only want to hear how great we are.

Think people need to realise these pundits always have one on either side of the fence. It’s entertainment at the end of the day. What Scholes said was correct but he’s chatted some nonsense in United’s favour as well. We were going to win the Europa League final 3-0 based on his assessments.

Imagine an Arsenal pundit or Liverpool pundit sat there fuming when their team has won, even back when both those teams were in worse situations than we are now. Wouldn’t have happened.

His point about “if we play like that against Liverpool” is a stupid one, as football doesn’t work like that. Also, even if we were the best team in the world we could be on a bad run and go 2-0 down and turn it around, it happens. Obviously his point is that we’re making the same mistakes again and the win is papering over the cracks, but in that case why is he surprised? Accept the difficulty we’re in and least celebrate a victory. Otherwise you’re not going to be happy until we’re the best team around which is stupid.

Sitting there raging that we won 3-2 and didn’t feck them up 4-0 like we would have in the good old days is the RedCafe mentality that creates the toxicity amongst e-reds.

I thought Scholes was hilarious, didn't let Rio pass his positive take on the game either

I think Scholes was expecting a big reaction. Ole's job is/was on the line and it took for us to be 2 goals down to start playing. In the good old SAF days, the team would come out roaring from the first minute after a bad result.

That's the issue, all those players only really had SAF as a coach and expect things to work that way, and it sadly doesn't.

That first half wasn’t even anywhere near as bad as he claimed ffs

There were times where the forwards were pushing up too high and there was a disconnect between them and midfield yes, but they didn’t have many chances and scored from the two they did.

Meanwhile we had multiple guilt edged chances in that first half.

He’s talking about us playing like that against Liverpool, what the feck has that got to do with this game? We will have entirely different tactics for Liverpool.

Bizarre child like rant.

Impressed by scholes stance tonight post match. Big time mentality and not being pally pally with Ole ala his Salford owners mate’s style

Paul "but the first half" Scholes

One of my favourite players to ever play the game but he always came across as on slightly autistic scale of the pitch

Scholes can get fecked, the miserable bastard :wenger:

Yes the defensive organisation let us down again but even in the first half we created a lot of chances so it really wasn't that bad at all

You can see why he had no future in management or coaching: he’s completely incapable of analysing anything but the scoreboard.

Huh? He did everything but analyse the scoreboard!
Well, not really. For Scholes, because United went 0-2 down at home to Atalanta, and weren’t winning until after the 80th minute, nothing positive could be gleaned from the performance. Rewatching the first half, it was almost the opposite of what we usually see from United: balance was better, United were getting majority of chances, but the moments (for once) all broke the other way.
