Why booing the players is acceptable but booing the manager is anathema?

that result doesn’t change the facts.
Do you go to games? Do you go to games when we come from 2-0 down in the CL and you're probably a bit pissed? People bloody cheer a win and get swept up in the celebration. Many of those fans chanting his name probably are probably ole out, but you chant, you cheer, you celebrate. It's football.

How do you boo a manager ?

Even with players it's extremely rare and always a minority when it happens but it's usually when they sub in/out or touch the ball - on the odd occasion it could be when their name is announced on the tannoy

I've never ever booed one of our own anyway

See Chelsea/Real Madrid fans. Two rational clubs with rational sets of fans who do not accept mediocrity.
Real Madrid fans are absolute nutters and I for one am glad we have fans who support the team.

Can't say much about Chelsea fans, all they do is chant Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea

Has anyone noticed it's supporters online who have the most to say about supporters who actually go to the games?

If you feel the need to boo the manager, book a ticket and go with a massive placard and megaphone, and whip the crowd into a "feck off Ole, clap clap clap clap clap" chant.

I know it's pretty radical but... I go to games because I enjoy it - especially so if we win!

Now it's a bit outlandish, but I find if the fans support the team, it improves the chances of them getting a result. Last night was a perfect example really. Very loud and vocal support during that second half spurring the team on who end up scoring three and completing an amazing come back. I got the tram home absolutely buzzing. I couldn't even sleep when I got home... too much adrenaline.

I even enjoy the next day when I read threads like this one. Cry more.

What antics? We endend up winning the game so it's ok to boo him? like what are you even trying to say?:houllier:
the sub might have been the right choice and for the better, I cant remember which game it was. All I remember was him getting booed by the fans and him looking down at the floor. Just cause we ended up winning the game you feel it was ok for him to get booed? You don't make any sense.
Please read my post..
I was just explaining the reason as to possibly why he was booed in that game.
At what point did I say it was right for him to be booed?
I didn't and don't boo at games but people do, it is what it is.
On this occasion it was about his "antics" of deliberately walking off very slowly at his substitution, which angered alot of fans in the ground, hence their response.
It's the only game where I personally remember him getting booed.
Just wanted to maybe give an insight into as to why this happened in that particular game.

I don't think they were directing the boos at anyone specific, more the club in general. They took exception to being 2-0 down at home to a bang average side like Atlanta in the CL, and rightly so.

Real Madrid used to boo Ronaldo
Yup, and in return, he had to give more and as a result they won more UCL in last decade then we did in our entire history.

They are a club who do not accept mediocrity, be it at the president, manager, or players. And as a result, they are by far the most successful club in the world.

yeah I go to about half the home games in a season and I also get swept up in the emotion. I also love ole. Ole out has never come out my mouth but.. there are many questions marks over him.. more than ever.

BUT .. the ole outters are still ole outters. It’s a fact the stretty end are a different kind of loyal to the Twitter follower/armchair fans. They will stick with him until he’s sacked. They will cheer his name until the final second.

the fans who get the occasional ticket here and there for a champions league/cup game.. are more than likely the ones who boo.

I think it's possibly because it has a very different effect. Once the manager is getting audibly booed within stadiums the overall atmosphere tends to turn toxic. The players feel that, the manager feels it, fans start squabbling and then ultimately unless there's a quick turn around it becomes quite difficult to retain the job. As we know, many match going fans support the manager and even the ones that are doubtful are not overtly demonstrative yet.

Booing an individual player isn't something I agree with but it either kicks that player up the arse, or hurts them, or has some effect but it's just one individual player. Maybe there are rare occasions when it is justified based on what we see from them on the pitch but in general I am not a fan, but I'd say it's less destructive. Even if the whole side gets booed it's more a case of "that wasn't acceptable", it doesn't really have any great ramifications in my opinion - a fairly common occurrence in modern football.

They were booing everyone involved from the manager, players to the coaching staff and rightly so. The performances have been nowhere near up to standard and the fans were letting them know it’s unacceptable and won’t be tolerated.

You know good and damned well that there is no correlation between booing and a team's success rate.

There is a big correlation between accountability and success though. United (from the board structure, to manager, players and fans) have long given up on it.

With regards to the booing, I am not saying that they should boo or not boo (and as I said in OP, fans who buy the ticket have the right to do what they want in that aspect). I just don't understand why players are fair game, while the manager is not. It is the 'X player is a clown' which would go easily here, but 'manager is a clown' would not be accepted. Or 'support the club and the manager'.

Somehow the manager is both the most supported and least accountable person in the club. For many, at least I have the feeling, that the club is a vehicle for the manager, rather than the manager being an employee of the club.

Can we all just focus on the fact that, while this thread is bollocks, anathema is a fantastic word.

I was at the game and the booing wasn’t aimed at anyone in particular, it was just an expression of frustration at the performance, the players and manager won’t have liked it but they responded well.

The emotion of going to a game is very different to staying at home and watching on TV though. When you are at a game, from the 1st minute to the last, you leave your opinions and your grievances at home and you throw your support behind the team, because getting behind them and roaring them onto victory is the only thing that matters. So you are very unlikely going to see the supporters target Ole or anyone in particular, I think the main exception is the Glazers and Woodward but that is a little different.

Ole said: "This crowd should never stop believing in these players.
"You do hear a little bit of grumbling. I've been here at this club for 18 years, more or less — and it hasn't happened often. They know they're better than that."
Carragher said: "I thought it was a strange interview that. The comment he made about the fans was a silly thing to say.
"It was a really silly thing to say the supporters should know better when they played such a huge part in winning them the game.
"Man United, coming in at half-time 2-0 down to Atalanta and I don't think they were that poor - but you're going to get grumblings, people who are unhappy.
"It's not just that game, it's a poor run of games and the performance they had at Leicester City. When that ground is rocking, it's difficult to stop.
"The supporters are as important as Cristiano Ronaldo and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, or the changes he made."

Don't understand whey there is so much talk about booing when it was drowned out by "Red Army Red Army" being sang at the players walking off 2-0 down.

Ole literally said the singing section were incredible and a big reason we won…are we just bashing him for anything now?
The singing section, the top reds who sings his name? yes, the same who sang Jose's name until the last day for him at the club. That section does not represent the the entire stadium nor the fan base. He should choose his words carefully and never ever take a shot at the fans because they are the soul of this football club. It was not just grumbling, it was clear BOOS from the entire stadium that I witnessed only once (Fellaini).

Those fans might travel thousands of miles and spend on one match what a "stretty" pay an entire season.

I think booing at HT/FT is fine, so long as in the 2nd half or next game the fans urge the team on during the game.

I've moved a fair so have been to numerous lower league clubs home games when living nearby, and when a fan base turns toxic it's just a negative cycle. Fans get frustrated, players lose confidence, fans get more frustrated, players lose more confidence and so on. When it gets bad it's really bad. Individual players getting very audible heckles and insults from the crowd, grumbles or boos whenever their name is announced. Chants about sacking the manager. Its a cycle that only leads to destruction.

I wish that we replace Ole (in a planned manner, line up the right person, not sack him and then think about who is available to replace him). It doesn't need booing during games. For a mid table club I sense they think it's okay, because finishing 9th or 16th doesn't really matter, and they're willing to sacrifice some short term edge to put pressure on the board. Doesn't work for United or other clubs around the top. Every game matters. Every result, every point. You can't justify purposefully attempting to bring down the team DURING the game because you want the manager gone.

oh 100%, couldn’t agree with you more. It is a massive expense and that’s more my point. Imagine traveling from cornwall and spending 300/400 quid to do so, for the players to not even press or try. Slap in the face.

This is just a guess - but maybe the people who say booing is unacceptable, and the people who are booing... aren't the same people?

Who thinks booing your own players is ever acceptable? Surely nobody?
Not a particularly good look but understandable at times and looked to have an effect against Atalanta don’t you think.

Nope. Never understandable or justifiable.

And I very much doubt it has a positive effect ever. It just makes your club's fans cnuts who should feck off and support someone else.

Disagree there. A fan who has spent his/her money to buy a ticket can boo anyone he/she wants. As long as it is not abuse, it is fine according to me. And this saying go and support someone else !! Just because people express their unhappiness by booing doesn’t make them any less of a fan. Infact it shows that they care. Again I don’t condone abuse, but booing is fine.

I don’t know. I think that is part of our problem. While for the most part you’re correct I see nothing wrong with booing an abject performance like the first half midweek. It is a signal to the manager and players that they need to do better.

If the players dont put the effort in they fully deserve to be collectively booed off, be it at half time or full time. Nothing wrong with it at all, not just a natural reaction but a necessary one. Fans pay through the eye teeth to go the games and are paying the players wages after all.

Booing individual players while the game is being played is a different matter, no real justification for that unless the player is acting a total arse.

The closest l noticed to directing anything at an individual was when they called Freds name in the line up, it was a very muted cheer.

My Mrs came to the game with me for the first time ever and said "do they not like him?" :)

Still not a boo though.
