So Ygritte doesn't count because she might have had a bath recently?
It’s the colour palette as well as how much dirt they may or may not have on their faces. GOT had washed out, undersaturaed colours. The trailer for this is much more glossy looking. It could still be good. Trailers tell us feck all. But based on those clips the look and feel is clearly a lot less gritty than GOT.

That’s because it is. They’re nothing alike.

I’ve not read this, went on Amazon and 50% of reviews say it’s basically not worth reading. Nuanced reasons but an overriding criticism seems to be it’s a poorly executed LOTR ripoff. I was thinking of buying the first book to take on holiday. Would any fans be able to Convince me to buy the first one?

The first book starts off in a similar vein to LoTR but they quickly diverge. I’ve almost finished book 3 and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. It’s not fast paced by any means, it’s a fantasy epic after all and a lot of the time is spent character building.

I’m listening to the audiobook and am listening to it in 3 hour chunks while I’m out walking and it’s a really nice way to digest it. It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s slow at times when you consume it like that.

That's nonsense and from people who didn't finish book1. The first book is LOTR like for sure but it's nothing alike afterwards.

I'm just hoping they don't go the MTV route.

I agree with @Pexbo and @padr81. It's LoTR-esque to begin with, and it's always more high fantasy than anything, but it's its own thing.

I don't get it dude, you've been told multiple times this is nothing like GoT and not intended to be.

A song of ice and fire is much closer to gritty historical fiction like Saxon Stories (the last kingdom) than the high fantasy, high magic worlds of stuff like Jordan and Sanderson.

You seem to be in here looking to point out it's not GoT when it's not supposed to be.

The Wheel of Time is never what I'd describe as gritty or dark. That GoT kind of colour palette would be hugely unsuitable to WoT as it even was to the more magical scenes in GOT. It was one of the reasons the children of the forest magic grenades stuff was so out of place.

You are literally in here on about an orange not being an apple, because apples are a more popular fruit. Making thrones comparisons isn't gonna stop this being wot.

There’s not even any actual swearing in WoT that I can remember.

LIGHT!
BLOOD AND ASHES!

That’s swearing in Randland

That post of mine was purely in the context of someone saying it looks “clean” in the trailer, then @nimic responding to that observation by posting photos of GOT characters with no mud on their faces. It was a silly little argument but silly little arguments are my life blood on redcafe.

We are what we eat.

Wait, does that apply?

Only if we're talking about eating apples and oranges.
That's a very different process, to be fair. I am beginning to think this apples and oranges thing has some truth to it.

I reckon that’s fair. I’m a ridiculously argumentative twat who thrives on pointless bickering. If the cap fits…
The implication here makes me intensely uncomfortable.

It does. For one I'd never even think about eating an orange with the peal on even if I had washed it thoroughly.

Those who didn’t like the trailer should do this show a favor by not watching it.
I personally loved the trailer, with one exception. It "looks like a TV show". I know that's an monumentally stupid thing to complain about but after being spoiled by shows like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and even Amazon's own The Boys, it just looks strange seeing something that seems to have been shot on 60fps digital cameras that wouldn't look out of place on the set of Doctor Who a few years ago.

can we all just hug it out and admit that the part where Rand turned into a dragon in book 10 was awesome?
That was Book 9. Book 10 was when Bruce Willis realised he had been a robot the entire movie.

You’re right, because book 11 is when Robowillis rides Dragonrand into battle wielding the Wheel of Thyme, which surprisingly turns out to be a wheel of herb infused gouda.

This us how it all starts. A series of wee harmless jokes about spoilers and some mild grumpiness...then in the blink of an eye it's thread bans, half the forum ignoring each other and staggeringly accurate timeline "guesses". It's all fun and games until someone loses an Aes Sedai.

This is becoming something like the Ronaldo/Messi thread. Inside a Messi thread. Different players, both great players, fans go all nerdwar and stuff. Just that it is about tv series based on books. My take is both book series was great, and both tv series will propably be great. Lets watch the series before we conclude, eh?

There are many great fantasy books series. I hope they start on Brandon Sandersons Stormlight Archive sometime. That would make a great tv show too.

Doesn’t look too bad.

I really disliked the first book, but everyone tells me it gets a lot better. I’d like to read them before I watch the show.

There's 14 of them and the TV series starts airing in three weeks, so that's plenty of time.
I think if he gets the audiobooks and listens at 2X speed 24 hours a day he might be able to do it.

I rarely watch new shows straight away, I usually binge them after they’ve stopped airing. Even so with how slow I read books these days 8 yes are might still be a struggle
