Ole just confirmed its his hammy
Yes, it was clear when he sprinted to the byline and stopped at the line looking down at his legs. He felt a tweak. The fact that he ran after that for a few more minutes tells me it's not too bad, he was being extra cautionary.

He really is godlike. The closest thing we've had to Rio

Please tell me he's not gonna pick up injuries constantly. Been wanting this guy for years, who hasn't! I really hope he can stay fit.

Was it even a hamstring injury he picked up over the last international break? Seems a bit harsh to say he was rushed back if not

Better not go away with France if he misses the weekend

BBC said:
Solskjaer adds that Raphael Varane felt his hamstring and the boss did not want to take a risk.
P.S. I assume that by the boss they mean Varane himself.

Head and shoulders above the rest of our CBs. Hope it isn't too serious.

My recollection is it was a groin injury the he got with France last time. Good to hear that it's not a recurrence of that. A few days rest and he'll be alright. Hopefully he misses the international break.

I think he(and Harry) were rushed to play after the injury and he didn't come back 100% fit.

Just because it's not the same injury, doesn't mean rushing back didn't contribute. Players need time to get holistic fitness back after an injury layoff.

What must he be thinking looking across at Maguire after a decade beside someone like Ramos?
I think you can see what he thinks by virtue of how much he sat back at Madrid and looked to back up Ramos and here, he's looking to carry and pass and push up whenever he can.

Unfortunately a hamstring injury isn’t a few days rest .

From Ole - "First assessment doesn't look good but we'll assess him again tomorrow and fingers crossed."

The drop in our composure at the back was when he went off was massive - hope he can stay fit for longer than he has so far going forward. We'll need it!

What an absolute dreamboat though, sits on the floor in pain from an injury and still looked amazing doing it  . Not a wince or anything to wreck his appearance during the whole sequence - couldn't even get himself to shed his graceful aura and limp off the rascal! Had the swagger of a runway model

Varane was a cut above our other defenders but as usual Ole rushed a player back to save his skin and it backfired.

I was talking to a club physio (not United) the other week and he was saying there is a push in football now to stop rushing players back, as longer term it improves fitness reliability, but lots of managers only think of right now and want their players available the second they can be. Injuries compound on themselves and that's why players become injury prone, because old injuries never heal properly.

How does one justify claiming he was rushed back when he played at Spurs on the weekend without any problems?
Because if the muscle is a little weaker than it should be, playing on it at Spurs and everywhere else will keep it weak. It might be a few games before it breaks again, but eventually it will.

This was the fear with signing him. Class player but quite injury prone.

Last thing we needed really this injury.
Was he injury prone at Real Madrid? Don't really follow them except in UCL.

Who would line up next to Ramos on those days?

He injured his groin playing for France. A grade 1 hip adductor strain is usually 2-3 weeks out. The Spurs game was exactly 3 weeks after the injury.

Seems as though he injured a different muscle last night anyway. Being reported as a hamstring injury.

The point he's making is valid though I think. If you've just come back from an injury and - especially if your injury hasn't fully healed - your body will be more suseptible to picking up other injuries, especially if you're playing a high volume of football.

All just guess work of course, but because Ole has the history he does with playing injured/not fit players, I don't think its unfair/crazy to suggest Varane might have come back in a bit earlier then he should have.

Yeah, sure. Ole has history here. I just think Varane probably had adequate time to recover, based on what little information we have. Especially considering he survived the Spurs game and a few days training before getting injured again.

He played 90 mins against Tottenham and trained all week. He clearly recovered and was passed fit, hamstring injuries happen and he’s known to be susceptible to them, you can’t wrap players in cotton wool and with the case of muscle injuries players get stronger and more supple by training and playing so if it had healed like it clearly had by the fact he played 90 at the weekend, it’s right to give him games.

He really is a Rio Ferdinand regen, injuries and all. :(

Bad luck with the timing unfortunately, but let's hope it's only a small strain and he stopped before it got worse.

Strangely enough it doesn't say much, it's something that I realized years ago due to the fact that the NFL has weekly mandatory injury reports. Athletes often play and train with hamstring or groin injuries, it depends entirely on the grade and on how much a player complains about discomfort.
