Barcelona still conceded 4 goals, if there is anyone to blame it's the players that conceded 4 goals.
That game was a tutorial on how not to defend.
Alba heading the ball into henderson instead of for a throw in that resulted in the first goal
Vidal tracking Wijnaldum on the wrong side for the 2nd
Pique not looking behind the entire move to see where Wijnaldum is, even when Shaqiri had the ball on his right, he's never going to cross with his right.
Then the 4th goal from the corner, even as a casual player when I play CB I'm asking my fullbacks to face the ball and walk backwards to get into position to defend a corner.
As a defender myself those 4 goals made me hypertensive, especially because it was Liverpool.

Sorry for going off topic, that game gives me PTSD.

The CL implosions have happened to others. I mean even the Caf’s favourite to be permanent manager bottle a 3-0 aggregate lead in one half of football.

People are desperate to "salvage something out of this season". Assuming there is something to salvage (there isn't, but ignore that for a second), what makes you and others think Valverde is the guy to go with?
I don't know if he is the guy or it that term describes anyone but Valverde is a good coach who outside of Barcelona has been used to instill tactical discipline and I believe a good base that can be used by any type of manager after him. He maintained Athletic at a good level and worked with a lot of young players.

Back to back La Ligas though.
With a team that won all but 3 of the previous 10.

Barca pretty much ended every season between 2008 - 2019 with around 90 points. It's a two team league and he just maintained the status quo for them and got sacked after a few bad games because his football was shit.

He is a decent option as an interim manager. The posters who were saying Ole was the worst manager in the PL( probably 70% on here) should be delighted.

They should be happy with literally anybody other than Ole, your right.

Imo we could do a lot worse than Valverde as an interim. Valverde for interim and Ten Hag's crew to come in the summer would be great.

Think they had only won 6 of the previous 10. Three under Guardiola, two under Luis Enrique, one under Vilanova. Guardiola and Luis Enrique are both highly rated here.

Reluctantly. Only if Dembele wasn't injured, or using Coutinho as a false LFW (useless).
Well, if he does come in, surely he won't go 4-4-2, we don't have a midfield to play that. Unless its a 4-4-1-1 with Bruno asked to stay deeper.

I fail to see better candidates for an interim out there...wonder who the rest of the 4 candidates on the 'list' are.

They won 7 out of 10.

Barca - 10,11,13,15,16,18,19
Real - 12 & 17
Athletico - 14

I thought you were only counting pre-Valverde titles.

The point is he won titles and there is merit to that. Luis Enrique is currently quite hyped even though his resume is managing an even better Barcelona team, and managing a Spanish team that hasn't actually won anything and drew most of their games at the Euros.

The reason athletic were great had nothing to do with valverde. Bielsa left a very strong base which valverde eventually ruined. The same thing happened at barca. Enrique left a strong base which valverde used for the league wins. Valverde relies on individuals and doesn't believe in wingers. Bland 442 is what you're gonna get.

Gonna be honest: in Spain I would rather gamble on Marcelino: good man manager, tactically astute and instills a very attractive football in his teams.

Pretty sure this would just be for the interim job, and the club wouldn't want to be spending money for that on a manager currently under contract.

His contact runs out at the end of the season, pretty much he would gladly accept an interim job at the Premier League to open some new doors. I actually rate him and I find intriguing why he never had a chance at a top club for a manager who deploys a positive brand of football.

If he is willing to come in and take over as interim manager I am all for it, he is a very solid candidate.
Better then Bruce or Allardyce.

Wouldn't hate him coming in on an interim basis and then going all out for Ten Hag in the summer.

What’s to lose if he’s interim? Clearly not who we’d hang out hat on to win trophies but experienced and doesn’t have a job.

He ruined it for 4 entire seasons where they finished higher in the league than they did under Bielsa? I liked a lot what Bielsa did but lets not make up things.

Then why not hire him as a permanent manager then?

We don't find a permanent so just give it to him after stringing a few wins together?

I can certainly get on board with this appointment as an interim - does anyone now whether he'd bring his own coaches?

You don't think we can salvage anything from this season? That seems overly negative. If we were to get in a top-class manager like Poch next week we are still well in the top four race, have just finished top in the Champions League group and have the FA Cup still to play for. Seems very defeatist to write all that off with the team we possess.

If he accepts the interim job there is no one better honestly.
What we need is a pragmatic coach who can organize our defence.
We have a very strong attack so playing on a counter with a solid defence should be enough this season.

Yeah Rangnick would be better but I doubt he would accept being here just to the end of the season without a DOF type of job afterwards and the board won't replace anyone imo.

People need to get realistic, not many top coaches will accept being an interim manager and PSG aren't going to let Poch leave now.

I just hope if we go with Valverde now the board will go on to sign Ten Hag asap.

I would be very happy with him coming in - in the interim. Who knows maybe he’ll actually do superbly. If not, I don’t think he’ll fecking butcher us, either. It’s a win-win appointment for me.

I mean I don’t really want him even as an interim as frankly, I don’t think he suits our squad even a little. But if there’s not too many other alternatives then for 6 months, how bad could he really be?

I would cry if he became our manager. Getting thumped by Liverpool though, he'd fit right in here.

Ok nothing is a bit strong

Top 4 is definitely important. I rate all trophies so the FA Cup would be nice to win, especially against the level of competition in the league.

I think hoping to win the league or CL is a bit much given the flaws in our team (mainly midfield) and quality of our opposition. Hence I'd be reluctant to hire someone solely based on what they could do for us over the next 6 months.

As little faith as we have, the backlash from Ole's drawn out tenure will mean they don't do that again.
Our board seem to run on iterative learning and being scared of making the same mistake twice. Sacked Moyes but didn’t give him enough time. Start giving managers too much time. Brought in Jose for instant success. Turned to Ole for his ‘plan’. Hired Ole after some success as caretaker manager. You’d imagine they won’t do the same again.

Put that all together and they’re now taking their time to find a manager who can instil a philosophy and they’ll give him enough time to do so.

One can dream.
