When the Ireland fans booed Ronaldo it was a bit odd but felt like a pantomime. He got the same stick from Villareal last night.

It’s a bit weird, isn’t it? Why’s he getting so many boo’s? Any other examples of supremely talented footballers being booed for no obvious reason?

Boos, boo’s, booed.. Tricky spellings.

The best bit about the Ireland booing was the immediate celebration and applause when he gave a young fan his jersey. Proving that the booing is a sort of worship in a weird way

Greats just become pantomime villains don't they. He's scored against and broken the hearts of every team in Europe at one time or another.

Adebayor when he scored against Arsenal, he didn’t antagonise them at all and showed class and respect.

He scored goals for fun against Villareal for years and years, and was complaining to the referee when he didn't get that foul pretty early in this game.

Pretty sure that's all it took to get the crowd going against him. And as is often the case, he ended up winning that bout in the end.

Looking forward to Lukaku repeating this at the weekend. The only saving grace is that he'd be fecked by the halfway line and wouldn't make it all the way to the away fans.

Yeah he is the archetypical pantomime villain to be honest  He's had it in pretty much every away game since 2007, due mainly to his arrogance in combination with him inevitablility having the final say.

Lewis Hamilton sometimes gets booed, recently at a track post race he was being interviewed and booed and he said something like "I don't mind you booing me because I know what you cheer". Was in some right wing horrible country. Thought it was a good response tbf.

They then all cheered when he gave that little girl his shirt.

Only ex-Tottenham/City/Arsenal player I absolutely love

Those Gunner fans in the stands were absolutely apoplectic and ready to storm the pitch after that

Why are people more jealous of him than, they were of say, Messi? Or Ronaldinho? Or Mbappé? Or Zidane? etc
Apart from Zidane, they're not good looking?

But really, it's because of his ego and I'm sure he's fine with it.

Because Ronaldo is more animated and as a spectator booing him would actually be more likely to get a response. Ironically, the only response would be him scoring more goals.

Players who have a certain swagger and ‘villainous’ vibe to them — the Ronaldo’s, Pogba’s, Ibrahimovic’s etc. tend to get the boos. Someone boringly clean cut (at least prima-facie) like Messi probably doesn’t ever.

Not as likeable

Although Mbappe is getting there but not as relevant.
Do people find Messi likeable?

Genuine question. I find him about as charming as a pair of old socks myself.

Great player, obviously - but dull as feck personality wise. And even a bit creepy.

Yeah agree. If I wasn't a United fan and a Ronnie fan-boy I would probably hate him as well.

Always thought he was perceived as more likeable because he doesn't come off as very threatening or physically imposing and more like an average person who's just incredibly gifted. People can see themselves in him whereas Ronaldo might be the fittest man alive since Bruce Lee with the physique of a Greek God with sociopathic determination and work ethic so he's less relatable to many.

Much easier hating or being jealous of someone they can never aspire to be like rather than someone who reminds them of their family, neighbor or friend

Personally never really been enamored by Messi like that and he can be just as petulant on the pitch as any star but he's been given the public persona of a Saint over the years in comparison to a bad boy like Maradona

His record against them, probably frequently diving and his personality/ego is probably why.

Aguero's pretty snide at times, had a great record against us, scored that goal for City winning the league and become their all-time top goalscorer but I'd wager a large number of United fans find him likeable.

Yes - I can see the logic in that.

However, to me he doesn't really come across as a guy-next-doorish person. There's something freakish about him - beyond his freakish footballing ability, I mean. Like I said above, he's a bit creepy - he's got some kind of lab experiment/robot vibe going on.

Ronaldo actually comes across as more human - even though there's something a bit creepy about him too...

Perceived arrogance, I would say. I don't think Messi etc get people's back up in the same way. Ability is part of it because if he wasn't relevant he wouldn't receive the attention, but it's not the only factor.

I’d just assumed it was some historic thing from his time at Madrid I didn’t know about. But maybe it’s just that he’s so famous.

l like these kind of players, they give the game a bit of spice, just like the odd ref mistake here and there.
I also like when opposition fans boo a player, as, most likely, it means something went down. (Or, on a 2nd thought, not really, considering how people just follow a trend these days it'd be enough for an idiot to start booing and the rest would follow).

in regards to Ronnie, booing him is kind of giving him a hand, people never learn, do they?

Ibrahimovic is a good comparison actually. He’s got the same swagger and arrogance (arguably more!) Plus he’s a proper heel with the way he behaves on the pitch.

He definitely didn’t get any boos playing for us. Has he been getting shit more recently for other clubs?

Dunno why the Irish booed him when he knocked England out of two major tournaments, in fairness! Probably a rake of Liverpool fans in attendance though in fairness.
