The guy is completely delusional. Why would a massive club like Man United give him anything close to a 'significant role'? The guy is at the end of his career and has never won anything of note. Both his expertise and his relevance are completely blown out of proportion, he has basically merely dabbled in management in the last decade. As a manager, he's really a nobody.

Murtough and Fletcher being there doesn't mean there isn't room for somebody like Rangnick. Lokomotiv Moscow have a Technical Director, a CEO, two Heads of Soccer School and an Adviser of Management all in addition to Rangnick right now. You want him, you find a role for him.

Murtough and Fletcher have just been hired and obviously aren't going anywhere.

So what "significant role" could Rangnick have under that structure? Because it would seem he would need to be doing one of their jobs and that clearly isn't going to happen.
Fletcher's job is to communicate with potential new recruits whether that's players from the first team or parents are youth level, to sell the club. He's a perfect person for that role and comes across as very intelligent and articulate.

It's unreal how the myth has grown. He's done a good job at Hoffenheim and at the Red Bull clubs, but without the financial backing he received at those he wouldn't have achieved anything. There's a reason he's never got a job at a big club, and that reason IMO is because there's many capable people within that field who could do a similar job or even better.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind having him as a short term stop gap and him being a friend of Murtough can only be a good thing.

But as a sporting director / director of football he's rated quite highly isn't he... sorting out training facilities and coaching set ups ... scouting networks and loan networks ... he would seem underwhelming as an interim manager but longer term might be a good fit for sorting out some of the other stuff so in that sense it could have some logic to it

You have a director of football. And I'm pretty sure you also have top level training facilities. You are also not a village club in 5th league trying to climb the divisions with financial backing. So no, Rangnick is definitively not needed and wouldn't help.

it's more complicated than that though. He stepped down from managing Schalke because of burnout and afterwards seemed to prefer the sporting director type roles, only stepping into managing Leipzig temporarily twice. It's why I wouldn't hire him beyond a short-term deal as a manager, but as an interim I'd absolutely love him.

Rangnick would identify players who fit a particular system but don't necessarily sell shirts. The Glazers won't like that.

I don't mind him as a interim tbf. He seems to be the one Murtough wants as well.

If it’s between Fletcher and Rangnick, I would go for Rangnick. Fletcher has done nothing to suggest he could do the role. Learning on the job should not happen at United.
That's a perfectly valid opinion.

But in real world terms we know Ragnick isn't going to replace Fletcher. So if people are actually suggesting that Ragnick get some sort of senior role at the club, it has to be one that isn't currently occupied by either Fletcher or Murtough, else it simply isn't going to happen. And I'm not sure what space there is for another role he could fill.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not saying there isn't space, I just don't know how other clubs divide duties well enough to see what role you coukd create that would complement the structure we've recently put in place.

He seems to rate himself quite highly that's for sure. I agree with Hansi, there just seems to be a car salesman feel to him. Even if he's capable, it's kind of off putting.

To me this is him saying I'll take the job if I get to pick the next manager. He'll institute a high pressing, not particularly high possession system and pick a talented and likely young, probably German or Bundesliga manager, to coach the team (based off him hiring Hassenhutl off of doing great with Ingolstadt, the Salzburg manager was their U-18 manager and is young and the New York Red Bull manager was a Red Bull youth coach. Rangnick was gone when Marsch got the Leipzig job but he was Rangnick's number 2 at Leipzig and then got the promotion to manage Red Bull Salzbug and he's another young coach ).

German fans will know better than me who that hire might be. Quick research suggest Bo Svensson, the Mainz manager, is a Rangnick protege and he's doing well there, Marco Rose at BMG is one too. There's a line in an Athletic story that got cut that Hutter and Rangnick clashed so maybe not him? I wouldn't even rule out Hassenhuttl as he hired him once and he knows the Prem. Again German fans here will know better.

So yeah, I'd say if we hire him as interim it will be with the idea of him starting the tactical implementation right away but picking a young talent he admires who knows his tactical approach and will seek to institute that. Does the club have the stomach to let him hire someone who's not a sexy name? I can't imagine it personally, which means if we hired Rangnick it might actually be for an 18 month or 2.5 year deal to manage the team himself and we hope he's done well enough that hiring a young manager to continue the work he's done with similar tactics makes sense.

There's 5 roles on the recruitment side which have the potential of holding real power from what I've read/heard reported . The one right at the top is held by John Murtough, and then you have Marcel Bout who is the head of global scouting and is the direct line between the scouts and John Murtough. We then have Lawlor and Court who are either working as chief scout or in the analytics department and both sit on the transfer committee. There's also Fletcher's role, which is quite limited from what I've read and he's more of a assistant to the above and helps with potential new recruits by either communicating directly with players or their parents when it comes to youth players. It's a ideal position for someone like him and it's a role Dortmund have also used to train Sebastian Kehl.

I know everyone wants ETH but appointing this guy as interim makes more sense as preparation for Poch than ETH doesn't it?

just stylistically I mean

Eh, he may implement some improvements in our pressing but thay would also be to the benefit of ETH too.
His teams play a fast transition play style with a emphasis on verticality in a direct style with minimal amount of passes towards goal. That would be best suited to Pochettino imo, because ten Hag's concepts of exerting zonal and positional control via ball possession is very different to Rangnick.

And as far as applying pressure goes, that would suit most head coaches and shouldn't be a criteria we use to create a foundation for the next coach imo. Because most coaches are adept at applying a coordinated press. I think if the plan is to hire ten Hag, then the logical choice would be Lucien Favre imo.

If he’s as good at building clubs as posters here think, what is he doing at Locomotiv Moscow?
Rangnick demands total control. Not many, especially big clubs, are willing to give him this.
AC Milan is a prime example. Former legends like Maldini having a say and blocked Rangnick's appointment knowing they would have lost their influence in the club.
Given total control to one person is of course a huge risk. However so far Rangnick always delivered.
The clubs he left, RB Leipzig or Hoffenheim, both having a good foundation and structure. However, they were nobodies when he took over.

If Rangnick can also do it at a club of the size of Man Utd United? That's the big question and it will most likely never been answered. Unfortunately.

We aren't giving him any role.
Yeah most likely as Rangnick won't compromise either. He probably believes (it knows) his philosophy will only work, if he got the control in all areas that he demands.

And this answers the former question, why Rangnick despite his vision and success never been hired by one of the big or elite clubs. They just won't give the powers he wants or needs to implement his system and structure.

The guy said very derogatory remarks about African players & their families, then doubled down on it.
Don’t care if he’s the best coach in the world - feck him.

Good question, maybe like @Hansi Fick said, he is a good salesman trying to create good market for him.
Because somehow, strangely, taking over Arsenal, then Milan, then Spurs, then becoming Schalke DoF, then Frankfurt DoF didn't come to pass!
God knows why, they're all in dire need of a visionary, and god knows Rangnick let us know he is availabe, interested, and in negotiations.

For what it's worth this was said this morning, I believe he's usually quite reliable when it comes to German news right? I may be mistaken, sorry if so... regardless i'm sad because he'd be my preferred option from our supposed list

I was half listening to Talk Sport in the car and there was a segment with a journalist based in Russia who has close access to Lokomotiv Moscow. He was fairly scathing about Ragnick in as few words as possible. Claimed the previous Sporting Director was more suitable to United and said that United don’t need Ragnick and wouldn’t want him. Interesting. Shame the presenters didn’t press him to elaborate on these points.

He is not coming here as Sporting Director though just as Interim manager , Sporting Director position is already taken By Murtough infact he is the one who is driving the process of looking for Interim and permanent manager .
