Best performer over the year = best keeper in the world during that period, no? I know that international tournament performances inflate these awards but it’s still a bit daft at times and slightly amusing that he’s not starting every week at his club but still winning the award. If anything it shows how overinflated the weight an international tournament performance can have.
No. For at least two reasons, it's about past performances and it's about exceptional moments neither of these things define who is currently the best. And France Football has always said that International tournameneds performances are iinflated, it's part of what they want, they want to recognize certain players with exceptional moments. It's not an award based on consistency.

He won the Copa, why wouldn't he win it? Only other contenders were Jorghino and Lewa. The award criteria stays the same but it looks like each year people understand it less and less
Copa America? Argentina and Brazil are by far the best two nations in the competition. Messi has been poor all year and he's clearly past it.

Fortunately I have never cared about this kind of individual award.

Fair enough if I'm in the minority but I really don't care.
I'm with you, in a team sport I don't care much for individual awards.

This is why these awards have become a joke, Ronaldo, Kante and Jorginho better than Salah.

Problem with Messi is that he can never win here. In the past it was argued that he has never won an international trophy but now that he has won it is being said that Argentina and Brazil are clear favourites.

No team in particular.

The thing is how do you measure than Kante and Jorginho are better than Salah? they play in different positions.

This is why i always hated individual awards in a team game.

Jorginho is in there because his club and country picked up big trophies.

Well, that's what it has always been. That's why the winner is generally linked to one of the major competition. WC, Euro, CL or Copa America, the best performer in these tournaments has a big chance to be the winner of the Ballon d'Or.

Its not a award for the best players but merely a popularity contest. There is no reason for it to be taken seriously

Justice have been made. I feel sorry for Lewa, but as great as he is he is a tier below.

Only a lunatic would vote for anyone else than Lewandowski after the year he had. If Lewandowski had been Italian this would have been a landslide win.

Messi winning this is just batshit crazy considering just how poor Barca were last season
Haven't watched enough of either played to make a decision but going purely based on these stats from this tweet I can see why.

some of you here are acting like it's Lingard that won the award, not Messi. also, it's 2021. Lewa is great, but like I've said earlier in thread, his goals in BL carry little weight because of what that league is. BL games are training matches for Bayern, their preparation for CL and to keep their players fit, nothing else. it is how it is.

which means, unless Lewa wins the CL with Bayern with him hitting crazy numbers (didn't happen), he basically has no chance against Messi. Bayern is too strong for BL for Lewa to win the award based on BL trophy only, and his NT is too weak for him to win anything on international stage.

Messi on the other hand played in actual competition before he moved to PSG and on top of that, Barca's current struggles actually add a bit to his case. I'm deliberately not even mentioning his Copa performance, as there is nothing left to be said on that matter.

he fully deserved this, no debate about that. I would have no problems with Lewa winning it as well.

That's fair, I just think when you have an award that is defined by 'best performer' there is a grey area which can be interpreted as best in the world over that period. The performances in big tournaments should contribute to it of course but not define it.

And he was the heartbeat of both.
Obviously the idea of Jorgwinnjng the Ballon d'Or is ridiculous but no idea why he gets talked about as if he's just a bog standard cog in a well oiled machine.

Because let's be honest, If you ask 100 people who would you rather have if you can only pick one 99 will say Salah and the one guy that wouldn't would be a clown.

It's only taken seriously by people when their favourite player wins, otherwise it's a worthless award.

Should have been Lewa for me given the past two seasons, Messi has stunk since his move to PSG too.
Salah should be a couple higher maybe, really can't take the ranking too seriously, Messi not better than Lewa since the last one was awarded.
