his inconsistency at his age is a worry

id love a kasper schmeichel 7/10 week in week out
I think you'd be surprised at what you saw if you had to watch Schmeichel every week.

For example, Schmeichel was one of the few goalkeepers less active in claiming corners than De Gea last season. Yet I think a lot of posters here just assume he is super dominant for some reason.

Some random quotes from the most recent page on Schmeichel from a Leicester forum:

On defensive corners I’d put him up on the halfway line in the holpe that he just might snatch a breakaway goal.
Can't we get Rab Douglas back at the club he is on the bench today for Arbroath at the age of 49.
His effort for the first Goal was shocking , He made no effort at all to get to the Ball. Yet he stood watching the Ball land on Rudigers head.
It's time to give Ward his chance to see if he can do better.
If I could choose one predictable thing on a match day it’s that Kasper will kick it out of play 30 yards up the touch line or pass it to opposition multiple times.
There is a reason he plays for us and no one else has come in for him. Needs to be dropped.
I’ve really loved having Kasper as our keeper, and he’ll forever be a legend.

However, our awful defending at corners is linked to him simply refusing to attempt to collect crosses.

It was really highlighted by 2 corners in 10 minutes today, Alex McCarthy started on his line centrally and made the ground up to take the ball at full stretch at the very far corner of his 6 yard box. Southampton are in possession and can reset.

At the other end “HEAD IT CLEAR” is heard as Kasper literally watches the ball go over his head 2 yards out and makes no attempt to claim the cross. We are under pressure even after winning the first header, the ball bobbles around the area for a while before eventually it’s cleared and Southampton attack again.

I think Ole made a mistake putting him back in the side. I honestly believe were a better team with Henderson in goal, he took charge of the box which gave us more stability.
DDG definitely the better shot-stopper, but I think he hampers our overall game, we need to look at the keeper situation this summer if we don't trust Henderson

Tbf to Ole Henderson had Covid at the start of the season so De Gea had to get back in.

Schmeichel is possibly the worst keeper in the league at this stage. There’s a reason why nobody has ever shown serious interest in taking him from Leicester.
You could be right, ain’t seen much of him this season but my point about DeGea remains.

Not a good audition for him yesterday. We don't need to compare him to Schmeichel or Van Der Sar, no half decent keeper would have allowed themselves to be bullied like that for the goal. Stay on your feet until the threat has gone.

There was also a shot in the second half that was typical of him. He parried it out high to the penalty spot, but instead of coming and claiming it he left Lindelof to contest a header that could have gone anywhere. It's not good enough.

Poor for the first goal, but he did have his heel stamped on, it probably hurt...

The two saves in the second half won us the game though. The first one, described as 'routine' in here... and then the even better one was the Auba one.. Ally McCoist said on comms he was offside, but he looked on to me.

How was it a better course of action? It cost us a goal.

I mean what course of action would have produced an even worse result?
Assuming he stayed on his feet but couldn’t move anyway due to the ankle, ESR took the shot and there’s no contesting that?

We all know De Gea is a bit soft, but in that situation I’d blame both Fred for stamping on him and Atkinson for failing to find his whistle before him. Of course, I’m working off the assumption that the pain was immobilising at that moment, if he could play but chose to play act for the VAR foul then go to town on him. I just don’t agree with the widespread sentiment that just because he was fine a few minutes later, it was all fake.

This is gamesmanship.

This is being a wuss.

There's no defending him, if he was seriously hurt he wouldn't have been able to get up a few seconds later.

Oh come on! If De Gea had went on playing injured, some of you would say why don't he assert himself and show the referee he's injured? Why don't he make a big show out of it so that the VAR will check?

But why assume he was completely immobilised? You know he wasn't. He was up and about 2 mins later, chasing after the ref. Fans need to stop defending cheating.

If Ramsdale was the one doing that, this forum would throw insult at him easily. That's cheating and nothing else, it hurts yes for sure, but even most keepers out there will make sure the ball's safe/out first before rolling around leaving your goal open.

Imagine him doing that at Champions League final and we ended up losing, would love to see how the reaction changed here

I dont know about you but I have been winded or down crutching my knees/ankles for a few minutes before running it off just fine with nothing more than some bruises playing football. It's common enough that I don't have to stretch whatsoever to think De Gea was in one of those situations.

And yes, I don't like players rolling around or going down upon contact, but that's how the game is played nowadays and you get nothing from the ref if you dont do that, so don't hate the players, hate the game. Objectively speaking, I don't think the stamp was enough to warrant being on the floor, but if he didnt do that he wouldn't catch the eye of the ref (still didn't, as Atkinson is old and slow as feck), then if a scrap or a shot comes in he would be useless with a hurt ankle.

I also don't expect the majority of people to agree with me, but this isn't me blindly defending an Utd player, I slate them more often than not, just didnt sit right with me that when a player has a particular reputation, everything they do is viewed through that lense, one instance of which is when Lindelof got a literal hand shoved down his face and we conceded a goal and he got murdered for being clearly fouled here.

My guess is anybody calling him a wuss for not instantly jumping up and acting as if nothing happened has never actually played contact sport and taken a knock. I've lost count of the number of times I've twisted something, or been booted in the ankle or leg, and for about 30 seconds you think you're gonna be out for months. Then adrenaline kicks in, you play out the rest of the game, and then hobble around for the next week.

It's possible to be in quite a lot of pain briefly and then feel alright afterwards. Fred fairly stamped on him, accidental of course. He still could have made an attempt at saving the ball to sure though.

If the incident with Smith- Rowe last night was a one off then I think we could all happily just put it down as 'one of those things' and move on.

However, this is far from the first incident where De Gea's lack of courage has cost us, and this is just the high profile incidents that lead to goals. It's frankly embarrassing that this has been going on for ten years now and not only do our fans/pundits seem to think this is normal, they take it one step further and make it out as if De Gea is our saviour/only world class player.
Watch any Utd game and now you will see multiple examples of this, not just in terms of being scared of a bit of contact, but also lacking the courage/authority to be brave and come for a cross/command HIS area.
Goalkeepers are normally known as the most resilient players in the team and we seem to think having one who is as timid as a mouse is acceptable.

We are talking about elite level sports here, we simply cannot afford to have a player with such massive flaws playing in such an important position and expect to win anything.
Before anyone says anything about the title he won already, I'm sorry but we still conceded a lot of goals that season, we just happened to have a really good team then, full of winners, that could score plenty of goals. We don't really have that anymore and, even if we had, our rivals are much stronger now and, as I said, these fine margins are everything.

I get that we have other outfield issues right now, but for me, it's pointless even worrying about this until we drop De Gea because, with him, we will always concede a lot of goals.
There's much more to goal-keeping than shot stopping, it's as simple as that.

I'd imagine most have. If you are playing in goal you take a hit you get up until the danger is cleared, then if you need treatment you look for it. You absolutely do not curl up into the fetal position on your goal line hoping the ref will come to your rescue. Only to jump up moments later when you realise you've been embarrassed when the ball has gone in.

There just wasn't enough in that contact to warrant a grown man to collapse to the ground and curl up like that. It's sore, but it's not something worthy of that reaction.

I'm in two minds about it. Say you're a goalkeeper and you take a knock which means you can't push off your feet and means you're 50 percent less likely to save a shot. If a shot comes in that you would have saved if fully fit goes in, you're not going to get any credit for staying on your feet. I think as well DDG thinks it's the Arsenal player who's done it and not Fred, hence why he milked it too.

That said, DDG should have been smarter about it (ie at least facing the ball) and not taking himself out of the game completely.

Having 2017-18 De Gea back is doing wonders for us.
